For extraordinary herol m and courageous devotion to duty as a pilot on a dive bomber lu action CITATION: NAVY CROSS For extraordinary heroism and conspicuous devotion to duty as a pilot in Marine Fighting Squadron ....... , in action against enemy Jap- anese forces during the Battle of Midway, June 4, 1942. Delivering a dauntless and aggressive attack against a vastly superior number of Japanese bomber and lighter planes, First Lieutenant Madole, then Second Lieutenant, aided in disrupting the plans of the enemy and lessening the effectiveness of their attack, thereby contributing materially to the success of our forces. He displayed the characteristics of an excellent airman in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. John Dixon, Colonel, U. S. Marine Corps. CITATION: NAVY CROSS For extraordinary heroism and courageous devotion to duty as pilot of a dive bomber in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Battle of the Coral Sea, May 8, 1942. Despite machine gun fire from an enemy dive bomber, Lieutenant fj.g.j John M. Clarke boldly closed range to attack and directing his fire deliberately and accurately shot down the enemy plane in flames. His determination and utter disregard for his own personal safety were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval reserve service. For the President, Frank Knox, Secretary of the Navy. 0In honorable memory of Captain John J. Raulstone ,31, pioneer of the North Atlantic, killed in line of duty, August 10, l94lg the memory of his achievements with his compatriots in service of his country, will remain with us HIWHYS'-TRANS-OCEANIC Pn.o'rs' ASSOCIATION 0 After Schafer's Pan American Airways oliice was taken over by the japs, signs were posted saying that any unauthorized person trying to enter would be shot. At the first opportunityfl said Charles, I de:ided to try out my plan. As I reached the landing of the back stairs, I looked up, and to my horror I saw a high japanese officer descending. It was too late to turn and run, so I attempted to brazen it through. I took two more steps, and the officer started to jabber at me in japanese, and pulled his long Samurai sword out of its scabbard, I swallowed hard. He grabbed me by my coat and spun me around. I imagined I could feel that blade cutting through my neck and thought, 'What a way to diel' But instead of that he spanked me soundly across the back side with the flat side of his sword. Taking this gesture as a sign of dismissal, I hurried away, and never attempted to enter the office the oliice again. -CHARLES Sci-IAFER '34, exchange prisoner from Japan 0 Friends of Wilson publications traditions will be partaking in spirit of the Campanile Party. All over the world we who have been scat- tered buy the indifferent hands of war will have memories of year book parties in our barracks, our tents, our mess halls, our galleys during Christmas season. Your boys, now men, are Hghting all over the earth to preserve the things that are dear to us all. They appreciate this tradition. It's one of those things we hope is imperishable. It's another tie of happier days. It's a way of keeping faith that there'll always be a Campanile to come back to-Boa PLACE '30, Lt. Anti-aircraft, Africa 9 It seems the morale of the combat crews goes higher after each :nission-the compteitive spirit I guess. When on the ground, the gun- ners are constantly chartering, congratulating one another on good shots and kidding about bad ones, or recounting to SEE who has the most jerry pursuits to his credit. The bombardiers brag about the bombs they have dropped, or, make excuses while pilots kid their navigators for coming into the home airdrome a mile and a half off course. I'm pretty happy most of the time because I've a bombardier with more direct hits to his credit than any in the group and a honey of a ship, 'Pink Lady,' which I'va had since I left the States.-BOB BENISH, Capt. '37. I2
