Ss F 0I 8Ll!0I S editor of Patches '46, it is hard for me to tell of an the pleasure I have derived from working on our year hook, and how proud I am, as is the rest of this year,s staff, seeing the hooic in print, ready for your entertainment. , This year, the editors have attempted to give you a hetter picture of life in the Halls of dear old Woodmere, a portrait of the students at work in the classroom, or relaxing on the lawn or at the haslcethaii games. For this reason Hpatchesn sports a slightly differ- ent maice-up, more candids and feature articles. Your pleasure is our stamp of approval. I wish to thank the staff for their whole- hearted cooperation in the editing of this hook, Miss Ederer for the long hours spent eiiicientiy planning our financial details, and Miss Van Der Meid for her untiring eiiorts on our hehahf and for her patience with our endless amounts of tomfooiery. I can honestly say, if you enjoy Patches '46, as much as We enjoyed preparing this hook, our utmost efforts will he gratified. BERNARD ABRAMS ROBERT AUERBACH WILLIAM BALcoIvI ROBERT BISHOP HOWARD CARMAN EDWARD CASPERSEN MITCI-IELI. COHEN ROGER DICKSON JAMES FITZPATRICK this page as a tribute to those Woodmerites who gave their all that we may continue our dem- ocratic way of life. Those hoys, who worked and played at Woodmere High School, as we do today, insured for us a continuance of all we hold dear here at Woodmere. To them we owe a debt of gratitude that can never he repaid, except by working for and liv- ing by those principles for which they gave their lives on far-Hung battlefields. We humbly dedicate this poem in memoriam for their supreme sacrifice. Here dead we lie because we did not choose To live and shame the land from which we sprung, Life, to be sure, is nothing much to lose: But young men think it is, and we were young. A. E. The uoldern students even laughed out loud, as they saw little Mickey Straclcs stumbling about, lipsticlc smeared over her face. fBut what can you expect, when sheyd only been wearing the messy stult six weelcs?j How could they realize that from such a gawlty child would rise the editor-in-chief of upatchesf' lt was baclt in those good old days that .lean Burlce and Hslceetsu Kelly began their daily visits to Mr. Otis' room. frlwhat man never loses his charmlj Time moved on to our sophomore year. We ploughed about amid a mass of King Arthurs heroic deedsj geometry theorems, crushes on seniors and World lnstitutions. Year number two in the Hworld of higher learningu saw the budding of our class athlete, Hslatsn Thomas, not to mention our glama- zons, Denise DeVeaux, Pat Mccartie and Pat Rear- don. One bright fall morning the class of '46 awolce to a startling revelation. We were upperclassmenll Somehow we can't thinlc of our junior year without recalling those riotous health classes, made even more hysterical by the humor UD of AI Dreyfus. And our junior class meetings, when poor Joy tried to sell anything from chocolate bars to Woodmere Beanies - and succeeded, tool The real highlight of our junior year was UOne Mad Night, when Mr. Boyd un- earthed our class Bernhardts and Barrymores. Some of the Hgrammar school gangn arerstill Hohhing and ahhingu over that spectacular lciss, when George Levine proved his worth as a Junior Cassanova. Nor shall we forget Jesse Margolirfs great faux pas of the evening, when he gently patted his powdered hair and caused a cloud of Mrs. Boydls best calce Hour to go lloating about the stage, much to the amusement of the audience. So. with a sigh and a giggle, we mounted the final step of Woodmere's ladder. After dreaming, hoping, praying and fearing for three years, the worst for the bestl was finally realized. We were SENIORSI lmmediately our noses were lifted. We tallied to Miss Van without qualcing with fear. We dared to eat lollypops in class. To tell all the fun that was crammed into those last ten months would be impossible. We welcomed Phil Crane to our midst, blue eyes and all, and discovered that he loved to play with the bells on typewriters. We ate hamburgers and ice cream on the stage, while rehearsing for our senior play. Norma Rashba was elected waitress because she always brought the food baclc hot, or cold, as the case may be. fNote of ex- planation: the hamburgers were cold, and the ice cream was hot, of course., At Joanys cast party Dolly Olswang was voted our champion jitterbugger. lvlost Woodmerites thought the lR.C. was composed ol' intelligent students, till they heard of the escapade of that club on the Staten lsland Ferry at i:OO A.lVl.l The sight of Henry Powsner whistling for a subway will long remain in the minds of the Hterrible twelve who made the journey. A familiar sight to most ol' the school are the girls of the fourth year Latin class who malce their way to Mrs. Kieltyls room each day. Though the class was larger, when it started four years ago, things are still the same . . . Grace is always wrong, Carolyn is always tallcing, Lynn is always smart, Nancy always does the homeworlc, and .loan Harris is always supplying the gum. As this hoolc goes to press, the plans for our Seniorama are being formulated, tall: of the prom is starting and we realize, with a jolt, that graduation is almost upon us. Sud- denly the superficial gayiety is swept away by a wave of grim realization, The lun, the carefreeness, all that is symbolic of high school is over. And as the curtain is about to be drawn on the best four years of our lives, all our hearts can say but one thing, Thanks for everything, Woodmere, and God bless you. ODLPVLZ? 0 Jedi' WINNING SENIOR ESSAY By Lynn Haas VVlFTl.Y, yet stealthily, the woman made her way toward her home, her refuge. She was a haggard creature, livid and he- draggled. Her loose Fitting rohe had heen ripped from her thin scrawny hody, exposing dull rough slcin and sharp, protruding joints. Her coarse hair was now matted, and stringy loclcs tell over her hrow, sticlaing to her temples. Une could easily recog- nize the anguish of recent violation and humiliation written on her tace, Her eyes smarted with furious anger, while her craclced lips spilled droplets ot hlood down the sides of her chin. For all hcr wretchedness, she hore no trace ot fear. There could he none H for she was Fear herself. lt was a long joumey to the darlc ahyss where she dwelt. She longed to he home with her sisters and her great mother, Death. For, although she was re- turning home, outcast hy the Earthlings who now scorned and moclaed her, her selt-confidence had not heen squelched. As soon as she would he refreshed, and perhaps encouraged just a hit hy those other nefarious maidens of Death - Disease, Poverty, Warfare, starvation - she would sullt haclc to Earth to resume her eternal taslc ot destruction and frustra- tion. She would soon again instill her own soul, that ol Fear, into that of Mail. liven now, crossing the Stygian underworld to her sanctuary, she recalled her conquests. Diaholically she gloated over her recent glory in vanquishing the destitute, How clever she felt herseltl How proudl How praiseworthy, that she alone, Without even the aid of material weapons, had caused the ruin of so many helpless humansl Disguised under the awe-inspiring, hemedaled uniform of Militarism, Fear had accomplished much. The defenseless dreaded the hrash, dis- daintul voice, the tyrannical eye, and the unrelenting heart she had placed within these cruel and in- solent men. With this guise, Fear preyed upon, haunted, and hnally crushed many scores of very young and very old who lcnew no method of comhatting her. She got little satisfaction from this, however, for she considered it heneath her power to overcome those hindered hy handicaps of age or deformity. She exutted in her ahility to persecute a hrave strong man hy tantalizing him with nightmares of the cruel- est hrutalities and the most degrading privations. To see a man succumh to her overtures of insecurity, terror, and suspicion, until ltnally he hecomes so in- fused with her soul and purpose that he is consumed hy herg that is Fear's most ecstatic delight. Still conjuring up her memories, the woman recalled the Youth with whom she had to contend. Admittedly this was her most hitter struggle. seducing Youth necessitated her most heguiling wiles and triclcery. More often than not, even her most persuasive talents were an insutlicient means to sway the stalwart con- victions of the Young. lt was her competitors F- Courage, Virtue, and Honor - who, after support- ing and encouraging the Young, usually succeeded in rendering them impregnahle to Fear. These memories induced others, and again she was seeing the blind, vulnerable faces of those who laced the Unlcnown. lmaginative artist that she was, she had the Fiendish ability to paint images on the canvas of men's minds. Whether it be Death or a less linal future she portrayed, her capacity for terror was in- comparable. The journey was long and arduous. Fear was ex- hausted, and for a time she did not seem to be able to gather enough strength or desire to continue to- ward the protection her home and sinister companions could olter. Never before had she, the potent Fear, been routed and forced to flee from the vehement belligerence of Earth. And what of her earthly assis- tants? Had they all been overcome? Surely there must remain some Earthlings willing to bear her perlidious gift to Manlcind. But if it were true, that her capable agents, whose taslc and chief delight it was to instill Fear, had been removed forever from the Planet, her course would be lost. Weary and badly wounded, she drove herself to continue toward home. Now her confident faith of retuming soon to haunt the world was waning and her arrogance was slowly melting into shameful mortification and an enveloping sense of defeat. As she enumerated to herself her sinful acts, she gradually began to realize thatqmuch of her lost power could never be regained --1 that she could never again dominate such portions of the world as she had been so recently wont to do. Finally, after a bitter holocaust, the power of her earthly agents had been snatched away. The new order which fear had avidly expected and assiduously planned to rule over all, had been swept away. One by one, she was losing her supporters. Man was shed- ding fearful thoughts as he sheds his clothing in summer, coming ever nearer to the bareness ol Truth. Militarism had suddenly, quiclcly, and perhaps per- manently disappeared. No longer need people qualce in their homes: hide their valuablesg send oll' their daughtersg and offer their best food and wine as ap- peasement, For the mighty organization had been conquered by the more mighty regiments of Liberty and Truth. Fear of agony of torture had dwindled to a relic of former times. This was natural, as this apprehension is merely a younger brother of the fear of militarism. Without the hovering -vulture of Fear's Uheiling henchmen, hope for a peaceful, natural life reawalcens and breathes anew the air of security. Youth will always be one of Fearls deadliest loes. It is the very character of Youth to lcnow no fear, to approach with confidence the unlinown as well as the expected. The boldest weapon with which to confront the unlcnown is ever-increasing Knowledge. It may be that everything will never be lcnown to Man, but always that is his goal, and as he comes closer to it, the more confident of reaching it he becomes. No, Fear is not dead, but seriously wounded. If man will not accept the challenge she offers, her festering wound might quiclcly heal and once again permit her to return to haunt the earth. Gnly a people desiring the lcnowledge to combat her, and confident they possess the means and power, can ever hope to liberate itself from the ominous menace of Fear. eo NK 'TT P' lg, 5 Lf?
