Llass H lstory The class of 43 had its humble bcgmnmg when we entered Kindergarten Our classmates spent a very nolsy and tearful first day Wltll swings and slldes, blocks and colored crayons, the teachers finally calmed and charmed us In first grade we learned to read and wrlte Next we palnted murals dealing wlth varied subjects ln Splfe of much shaking and ha1r pulllng, we enjoyed our stay ln this class Fourth year class began ln the Annex Our class was divlded lnto students ln the Frankhn School and new W oodmere Grammar School The Ulalll accomphshment of fifth vcar was the creatlng of a map of Long Island on beaver board Woodnlere students attended QlXlll grade ln lugh school bulldlng Mrs Hew lett and Mrs Paxton, commonly known as the sisters, were our teachers for this year Sylua Malman reclted the Creed for Amerleans ln assembly, and we also made beautiful stained glass wmdows The contrlbutlon we left thls year to the CXllllJlt had nex er been and never wlll be cqualed Franklm School students looked forward to class Wltll handsome Mr Harvey We put on The FIVE Llttle Peppers and stlll remember Henry Strauss as Alexander Graham Bell Our first acquamtance with the Amt man Constitution and Gone Wllll The Wlnd was cstabhshed here Miss Porter, well liked Enffhsh teacher, left school to get malrled A new element from Franklm and Hewlett Schools agam Joins Woodmere Mr Staley s band played weekly for lunch time dances Future ro mances had thelr beginning ln our Junior lugh classes Harold Katzen was over whelmed by the attention he rccelved as most popular boy All were excited at the prospect of enterlng high school Awed by MISS SCllI16ld0lf and Mr Utls, charmed by Mr Cmaylo s dlsposltlon thus began our four long years Future basketball stars appeared as Wllllam Henggler, ,lack Barnw ell and Frank DeGraff started thelr long careers as athletic stars Sonny Lee began lll9 first term as class presldent King Arthur and the shadows of l amclot fell heauly upon our Sophomore heads As we plodded through he Making of an American and Plane Geome try, future honor students bevan to show tl1e1r splrlt Certain students angered MISS Metzler by usmg the word bormg It was our turn to tease llttle freshmen and we made the most of lt Our Latm Lice , excluslve thlrd year Latm class club, wlth adopted Latin names annoyed Mrs Klelty Big event of the year was our .lumor play ' I'm ln the Army Now Dlck Brower, Sylvia Malman, Teddy Lorberbaum and Pat Lopm were lnltlated into the Natlonal Thesplan Socxety at its first ceremony At last we were upperclassmen' At last we find ourselw es Semors, near the end of our four years at Woodmere Donald Friedman and Carolyn Lee emerge v1ctor1ous from the battle of wits as valedlctorlan and salutatorlan Alice Carroll and Carolyn Lee have a busy year collectlng money for caps and gowns Senlor prom and dmner are the outstandlng events of the year Hilarious Semorama rehearsals caused llllss Russells left eyebrow to l1ft Thoughts of future Jobs and college, plus sprlng fever add up to equal the months before graduatlon Looklng ower the work and worry, fun and happx ness, that have comprlsed our years at W oodmere, we feel reluctant to end thls chapter of our lives W e wlll always remember W oodmere as a stage on wl11ch have appeared the never to be forgotten scenes of our school days 1 o - .- . . . v 54 . ,g . . . . . . , , .
