We can say, though, that Woodmere Academy was not many things that we expected it to be, and that it has been many things that we never expected. Most importantl as we y, now begin to look back at our years here we are left with a myriad of memories. Some will be good, others bad, but each will have its own special niche in the back of our minds. Kindergarten Mrs. Horowitz introduces us to school life. Show and tell is the morning's event. Toys and dolls along with our first loose teeth are major topics of discussion. B.B. G Y.K. start at this point and are the only ones to finish out. P.S. goes through her first glass door. Rebellions against rest hour occur daily. Spot and Jane appear in our first and favor- ite books. First Grade Who ever thought that only a handful would survive. Mrs. Kleiman and Mrs. Gold do their best to put up with wacky kids. J.W. makes a cameo appearance before becoming the youngest ever to be 'asked to leave'. D.W. shows us what real speed is on scooters and the football field. Mr. Contemanolis teaches us dodgeball when Mr. Breene is absent. Bowling parties begin as pin the tail on the donkey becomes a game for little kids. Second Grade Mrs. Garson divides us into advanced and normal groups for math and reading. R.R. puts tacks on S.M.'s chair as we all pretend we don't know who did it. The race begins . . . who shall finish S.R.A. first - A.L. joins us and wins easily. G.G. scares us when he burns his leg and Robert Reell scares us even more with his breath. J.B. defects from Brandeis to join us. Audrey S. begins her kissing chase as all the boys evade. Kickball and rope climbs are in style as L.A., S.M., and G.B. prove their athletic prowess. Third Grade The first day draws mixed reactions as we are split into 3-B's and 3-A's. Mrs. Amder and Mrs. Benson never were the same: in fact, Mrs. Amder leaves us halfway through and Mrs. Marks joins in the fun. J.S. departs, but not before he leaves us a library. We all begin to make fun of C.A., and he never realizes it. We work on penmanship and to the delight of the teachers B.B., A.L. and L.T. write beautifully - L.G. and A.H. don't fair so well. L.A. breaks his collarbone three or four times. Fourth Grade Mrs. Cohen becomes Mrs. Weinberg and Mrs. Marks becomes Mrs. Dori. Every so often one of us forgets their name and calls them mommy. Spell- ing bees begin. So does Mrs. Dori's sixty-four question game and A.H. and G.L. battle it out until the last day when she wins. M.S. joins us for one year, and one year only. D.K. gets his first computer, throws a lavish birthday party Cnot to be surpassed until G.G.'s bar-mitzvahj and comes to school three or four times. S.M. begins to play with L.T.'s head. J.S. puts his fist through a win- dow and calls it quits. Fifth Grade We learn to love Mr. Dover as he teaches us our chosen science. Playground football comes into full swing as L.A. and S.M. show off their bucca- neer skills. D.K. begins to attend school fairly reg- ularly. Mr. Poles conducts a mock court and A.H. gets his first taste of defending a hopeless case. We begin to take courses with the sixth graders and they are forever sorry. Mr. Poles and Mrs. Hurwitz are informed in December that they won't be returning so she packs her bags and leaves at lunch. Mr. Goldstein soon takes her place in math and home economics and shows us why scope was invented. L.V., M.C., L.A., and D.Y. depart. David Y. shows us what a true ge- nius is as he explains computers. Sixth Grade Our first taste of being seniors and we remember how it felt to be the little kids. Sixteen of us make it and have the smallest graduation parties in history. Y.K 6 A.H. begin their feud and invite everyone but each other to their parties Cthey finally give in and let the other come. thoughj. We finally get to pass the lamp of learning. S.M. continues to play with L.T.'s mind as he pretends not to want to go to her party. We bid farewell to Mr. Dover and Mrs. Umans. G.G. and G.L. lead the Parrots to victory at field day as S.M. and G.B. almost cry on the field. Kissing games become our favorite pastime. A few of us try our hand at teaching and hate it. A few of us are sad to bid farewell to the lower school. Barbara Barth wins the Margie Boas award and Alison Leigh is granted an award for her poise, charm, dignity. and brilliance. Both awards are well deserved. We graduate singing Mahogany and head to the beach to celebrate. Seventh Grade We enter the middle school while it is still a Jr. high. C.S.. S.S., S.H., A.J., S.A., P.A., M.B., N.M., W.C., D.C., G.G.. T.P.. G.R., and J.R.join us. Many girls swoon at their first sight of AJ., and N.M. imagines that all the boys feel the same way about her Cremember this: hi fans D. We all take the Ann Landers maturity test and lie about our scores - none of us were wild and wooly at thirteen. Bar-Mitzvahs begin as we all try our first mixed drinks. J.B. and N.M. form a couple. 6.6. and J.B. begin to fall in love. We learn to love the ancient mariner and to hate Mrs. Marcy. A.H. teaches us how not to be class president. 124 Eighth 6rade Mr. Copeland tries to teach us English and 6.L. teaches him about life. W.C. and A.H. battle it to the death in the same class. Mr. Weinbaum teaches us about alge- bra and Hawaiian dress. L.K. leaves for Florida for the first time. Where 6.6.'s bar-mitzvah awed us, .l.B.'s shocked us. We bid a fond farewell to Boot: he made an impression we never shall forget. His humor and his friendship were more than something special. We meet R.F. and teach him how to spell his name. We stop calling S.A. 'squirt'. Mrs. L. teaches us about earth science and perspiration. Ninth Grade Steve F. joins us and introduces himself slowly in Ms. Fahs' class. M.S.'s parents teach us about true hospital- ity while he teaches us about poker. N.R. joins us mid- way through the year. 5.6. opens a bank account for his winnings . . . A.H. and M.S. don't. Doc Seville and Mrs. Simon teach us nothing and call it european histo- ry. Everybody does well on the bio final except those who sit in front. We meet Mr. Ames and wonder if it is a mole or a birthmark. We welcome Sue P. and Pam F. who later become closer than the Bobsey twins. S.P. and 6.6. We hit 6reat Adventure for the first time and some of us bring back whips: M.D. has fun analyzing this. Niffer joins us and has her first taste of W.A. with J.B. R.A. shows us his moves both on and off the court. Mr. Puffer teaches us Geometry in his pre-'Billy Bumbry' days. . .from the Heckle to the N.Y. times book review. -In-1-. 5 5 -'Minis 2 Q Tenth Grade H.F. rejoins us. Miss Astle begins to prepare us for the boards, and we hate it. Doc Verterjoins the fun and shows us his machine which not only solves chem problems but hands out dots and upsets students Cmuch to the dismay of A.H. who collects 633. Sweet sixteens begin. Mrs. Feldman shows us that students can look older than their teachers. Mr. Jensen shows us just how long a class can take. Mr. Arnold and Doc Dwork decide they have had enough and head for California. Coops and Trav join the ranks and show us how the other half lives. Ben Munvies and Wayne Bloom say goodbye. B.B. puts a large hole in J.L.'s wall and regrets it for months. A.J. and A.H. begin their feud in math. Julie S. decides to head for the promised land. She also has her 'knee' fixed. N.M. 6 K.B. N.M. fr R.S. 126 Eleventh Grade Typewriters click away at E.T.S. and determine our future. Some cry while others laugh. A few of us begin our senior slumps. 6.6. and LB. are once again in love as he gradu- ates. Brad. G. shows us how truly special he is both on and off the soccer field as he takes both the scoring title and 99 from F.G. N.R. and P.F. pretend they are not seeing each other for about four months: one of them regrets it. N.M. and A.H. begin o lasting friendship which draws much speculation but little else. Barry G. joins the gang and soon earns a starting spot on varsity basketball . . . he also finds a dozen or so girlfirends by being a nice guy. W.C. finds a boyfriend . . . and it lasts. We almost have a prom. D.C. proves himself to be a future major leaguer as he dazzles Collegiate with his fastball. A.S. joins us and begins to chase S.L. . .. he catches her. We get our first taste of Model U.N. B.B. Cr W.C. have their first real feud. W.C. becomes the class president and doesn't attend meetings. We elect N.R. school president. We watch the grade above us graduate. Twelfth 6rade We all come back ready and willing to start our senior slumps. A.H. has abandoned fifty pounds and more than one friendship. N.R. starts his career as a casanova with Lannie and Bronna: if only they had better names. F.F. opens at the back barn. We all learn thejoys of the Porthole, Back Barn, Chang's, and the Buckboard while 6.6. would rather spend his time at Xenons. Lucy 6. comes to school once or twice a week to demonstrate her senior slump. M.S. starts the year off with a girlfriend, but soon decides that he'd rather be free 6 throws a party for a thousand or so of his closest friends as his mom looks on in disbelief. We frantically apply to colleges: many decide on Brown and Tufts, but only a few get in. Madame breaks her leg and imports a substitute from France much to the dismay of M.K. who would rather break bones on the court than study. D.H. grows a foot or so and decides that he still doesn't like basketball. C.S. comes to Hal- loween in male clothes - A.J. and N.R. don't. B.6. falls in love with F.B., but it doesn't last. R.M. and H.F. make it through all of high school together. Half the school demonstrates their spirit as they pay Brandeis a friendly visit. and P.A. gives o cop fake l.D. J.l3. gets a Porche and 6.6. chooses alittle Alfa while R.F., M.S., and J.R. wouldn't give up their trucks for the world. B.C. takes M.B. out on a date and calls it an experience. B.B. throws a Homecoming party nobody will forget: es- pecially D.C. who turns green on the soccer field the next day. J.L. makes many trips to Farmingdale with D.B. and R.L. squeeze into the back of her RX-7. A.H. loses battle. Trevor teaches Rona and Mitch about obscenity as they both blush and he smirks. lf only the second half goes as well as the first . . . 127 ip- ixv Ii FS 'N X gi Q x 5 -C Hy' wwf.: 6 ,- 1 42' 130 Q 4,1464 f if , A f W Q! 4' 1 5 ' W 5 ff! f f f. . ., ., ,,.,,.,,. Every one who came in contact with the team. players or supporters were guaranteed a good time. With Jill Lomove leading the statistician squad, the Woodmere Academy soccer team soared to numerous victories. Defending the goal position were the famous bobsey twins of goal: Dave Wind and Paul Freundlich. Their tremendous, stupendous saves thwarted and intimidated the opposing teams' offensive surges. Leading the offensive attack of Woodmere's highly effective offense were Brad Golden and Frank Gallo. The fullback positions were filled by James Rinzler, Peter Andrews, Saul Fine and Mitch Auerbach. Without them the goalies would have suffered Ca littleb. The team would also like to make a special mention to former starter Adam Hoeflich. His compelling personality and inspiring talk persuaded us all to do our very best in the game. To all those not mentioned, publicity is not everything. Only a few things remain to be told. Who will wear number nine and most important who will pick out the thermos. The team coach Cbrian Manfrel used his knowledge to our advantage and we all profited from his decision, We would all like to thank him fora 14-4 almost championship season. The four losses were all close games, a 2-1 to Horace Mann in our first game, 2-1 to Collegiate with David Cordero benched, and a game to St. Pius whom we later wan. To most of the people who did not think they would make this article, here is your big chance. Adam Holland on lead guitar. . .only kidding. The following played just as big a part of the success of the team as anyone. Captains Leslie Travis and Stefi Sherman were always there to lead us in the warm-up drills which we loved so much. Regina Lanter, our goalie always managed to skip the heavy warm-ups by practicing with our honorary teammate Joan Pinsky. Forward llyssa Wolkoff led the team in goals followed by Gigi Gesser, Lisa Gaton, Margot Reische, Lisa CSpunkyJ Gunther and Roxanne Karsch. Our forward line was backed up by our very strong half-back line. Leading them was senior Jeanette Macht followed by Calliope Tavlarios, Leslie Travis, Monique Jackson and Karen Silver. As always, Calli's arms and legs were all over the field as well as her throw-ins which were more then noteworthy by all. Our Fullbacks were big and mean thanks to the contributions made by players Jessica Cherry, Wendy Caplan, Stefi Sherman, Ilene Nelson, Vicki Herrera and, who could forget, Stacey Leigh, who spent her time charging head first at anyone who came near her. Of course, we couldn't take credit for such a team without thinking about Coach Anne Kaslow. Kaz worked hard with us and we REALLY did love all those laps around the soccer field. The team had o lot ofspirit. We went on the field singing ourfavorite song Here She Comes and often came off the field with what was thought to be broken bones. All in all, we had a good time, and our spirit never dropped-that's what counted most. 155 I ,I 156 H , , ,V Vii,AA VQIV VVYA I ' - V H V , WL ,L V K ' ' r,'f 157 ':g- . 92 M w. ,, 1. . -V mf- , 7 3 - by ,, 5 C 158 BOYS JUNIOR VARSITY SOCCER The Junior Varsity team used Coach Jamie Van Wart's intensified play to lead them to a victorious 10-4 season. Coach Van Wart stressed intensity and aggressive play during practice, in which, these principles were carried out by each and every player, in thus, leading to a winning season. Though the J.V. had an outstanding record, they came up short in their quest to retain their I.P.P.S.A.L. league championship. The team was unable to contain their championship in a disheartening 3-2 loss to Knox Academy. The teams captains were veteran defensemen Richard Singer and Wayne Greene. The teams Most Improved Player Award was given to Todd Tucker, for his supurb play on defense. The teams offense was lead by high scorer, Robert Siegal. Robert Mintz and Jeff Reiss teamed up with Siegal to lead a productive J.V. offense. Kevin Eisner, Kevin Copper and Eric Gillman were the team's second offensive threat. The midfield of Hal Weinstein, Donald Kiristis and Marc Glickmen added another dimension to the teams offense. Other midfielders such as Lenny Rosenbaum, David Gross, Michael Handel, Lewis Barbanel and Carlos Chun were used effectively by Coach VanWart to aid and relieve their starting midfielders. The teams solid defense of Richard Singer, Todd Tucker, Wayne Greene and Aron Yagoda allowed the team to win in so many of their games. Bruce Sharkey, Kenny Blumburg and Scott Modlin helped to fill in the gaps in the starting defense. The J.V. goalie, Andrew Schondler, turned in a fantastic year. The LV. team's captain was Lisa Gunther who led her team skillfully through the season. The J.V. team was made up of Pam Fink, Stacey Speilfogel, Lisa Gunther, Jessica Cherry, Karen Silver and Michelle Wein. 161 Y ia.. 162 ......w..a..-.qu-u Jn ,..'- f - -... '-j-' 3 F -2-:sf . l x This year's Boys Varsity Basketball Team is a team to remember. The team improved a great deal since last year. Able to function as a cohe- sive unit, the team became a strong contender for the league championship. Because the coach and players all began the season with at least one season of varsity experience, the team was more ready than ever to win the championship. The team's lead scorer was captain Robert Marder. He directed the offense along with starting guard Raymond Aviles. Jeffrey Frankel and Barry Glickman led the strong defense, while leading rebounder David Hochberg and four year veteran starter David Cordero controlled the boards. Other team members added depth and gave support and assistance where needed. Marc Karyo and David Wind were strong rebounders who also added strength tothe offense. Newcomer Andy Jonas helped the team with strong defensive playing. Neil Rosenfeld and Mark Weiner handled the ball well, and usually got it to the big men, the result of which was usually a basket. Without a doubt, this years team will not be forgotten as a league record of well over 500 was achieved. This, in comparison with last years dismal total of 311 has greatly pleased coach Mark Goodman. 165 K. . a Q . -V515-' ' : . :, . ,... i Q . . .wx ...,, .W '1 ...Wm r sh.. Although the levels of the individual players varied greatly, they worked together to create a winning team. With a 12-4 record. the girls' team proved to be a sight to be seen. The team started out with four returning players, and two players from last years J.V. team. Five new people joined the team and worked very hard to play at the Varsity level. The two captains, Seniors Gigi Gesser and Jeanette Macht led the team in ball handling, outside shooting and fast action plays. Junior Ilyssa Wolkoff was the key defensive player leading the team in steals. Sophomore Regina Lanter led the team with points and rebounds while our other sophomore Jessica Cherry pulled down rebound after rebound. Lisa CSpunkyJ Gunther was always good for Iayups. Newcomers included Senior Lucy Goetz. Juniors Joan Pinsky and Eden Nussbaum, and Freshmen Sheva Teicher and Karen Silver. Sheva. who knew nothing about basketball, by the end of the season became a key outside shooter. The basketball team was a small group of girls who became very close during this season. The annual basketball tape was always good to raise our adrenalin to high heights. The team is only losing three players so we have high hopes for next year. 169 4,wfMQf H' Ay 170 'fm ffgmimid' Wm Z 4:4 '7-'Q A4 4 A S , t 1, WH Xa x X we . --Mm-84... ...., , , JUNICR VARSITY BASKETBALL 0 5' 5 'ff ..-3 l 'Ii The Junior Varsity basketball team is small in stature, but very big in heart and skill. The team is led by Captain Rocky Minz, Aron Yagoda, and Max Karyo. Bulk and rebounding were supplied by ninth grader Donald Kirsits. Wayne Greene also pitched in when called upon to do so. Marc Glickman, Dennis Gottlieb, and Steve Friede were strong aid from the bench while Rob Kultun threw in many points when brought in. Marc Weiner came down from Varsity and scored twenty points or so for important games. At the time of this article, J.V. is undefeated and competing for a league title. The team uses both press, zone, and man to man defenses. On offense they are often freewheeling, but run set plays when called upon to do so by Coach Manfre. Now that the season nears an end, we see that we not only have a fine team, but an even finer base for the future. 173 X ,ff jf 'JI X NX HJ I K Boys Vorsity Boseboll ,, I ,,,, 'k,,,,..W..,,W .mfr ,, , -1 Www'-W ji' W, , , ' . , 'V , QM 1 ,W f fm, wwf, ,wg I ' f- 1 : at - H ,.
