HISTORY In the year nineteen hundred fifty-one, forty-five Freshmen Cadets struggled into their insulated space suits, helmets, and oxygen tanks, climbed into the latest model flying saucer, the Woodleaf Shoot- ing Star , and started off slowly through the atmosphere of knowledge in the halls of Woodleaf High School, With our Flight Instructor, Mr, James Barringer we picked up speed and the year flew by like Haley's comet. As Sophomore Cadets with a new instructor, Mr. James Wilhelm, we rocketed from Mars with a new burst of speed, leaving five cadets behind. The clouds of inexperience were slowly fading into the back-= ground, From Neptune we blasted off into our Junior year. Gaining one new cadet, we started our advanced training with Mrs. Mary Ligon, our instructor. The Woodleaf Shooting Star sailed through new and exciting adventures. Some of our cadets donned their space helmets and landed on earth long enough to present the Junior Play, All of the Juniors were striking in their space formals at the Junior-Senior Banquet, We were enjoying this business of education more every day, Venus was glowing with pride as we guided our ship into the stratosphere for the last time. Losing two cadets, we now numbered thirty-nine. Our Advisor and Instructor, Mrs. Mary Joe Chambers, helped us to see that our possibilities were limitless, We were proud to have Annette Miller as our Space President, Sylvia McDaniel as Vice-President, Walter Fleming as Secretary, and Harold Allen as Treasurer. We whirled through the Junior-Senior Banquet again, presented the Senior Play, and received our class rings which we wore like true cadets. As we blaze our trail through the heavens in our faithful ship, we look back - hoping to hold true our motto, The Star of Today Will Brighten Tomorrow.” Barbara Penninger Historian
