CLASS FLOWER Red Rose CLASS COLOR Blue and White MOTTO To make our lives a challenge, not a compro- mise. Mascots Kay Hollaway Daughter of Mr. Mrs. Dale Hollaway Gary Gibbons Son of Mr. Mrs. J. B. Gibbons Mildred Foster Historian Class History In nineteen hundred and fifty, forty-one freshmen boarded the W. H. S. Airliner fora four year flight through the classrooms and halls of Woodleaf High. Through the careful guidance and leadership of Mr. James Barringer, our pilot, we completed the first year of our flight. ‘‘All aboard, all aboard,’’ called our new pilot, Mr. James Wilhelm, as thirty-six passengers climbed into the plane and took their seats for the nineteen fifty-one Sopho- more ‘‘take off.’’ Before we realized it the plane was descending again, this time at the Junior Airport where two students discontinued their flight, leaving an enrollment of thirty-four. Before we left the ground another passenger was noticed, and the pilot waited until Miss Jeanette Current, our adviser, boarded the plane. During our Junior travel we experienced many thrilling adventures; among them were our Junior Play and the Junior-Senior Banquet. But soon May rolled around and once again the W. H. S. Airliner brought thirty-four Juniors to a safe landing. Thus, for three years we had flown through our Freshmen, Sophomore and Junior years. We could hardly believe that now we were climbing into the dear old W. H. S. for the last time. Thirty of our original group and one new student brought our crew to thirty-one. Assisting the pilot were: President, Leroy Burgess; Vice-President, Patricia Benson; Secretary, Jerlean Snider; Treasurer, Jackie Barbee; and Sponsor, Mrs. David Chambers. Receiving our class rings, presenting the Senior Play, attending the Junior-Senior Banquet and the Carolina-Tennessee Football Game at Chapel Hill were some of the high- lights enjoyed. We are very grateful to our parents, teachers and principal for their inspiring help and guidance. We will sincerely strive to ‘‘Make our lives a Challenge and not a Compro- mise.”’ Historian, Mildred Foster Jerlean Snider Poet Class Poem Arise and cheer, Oh Woodleaf High, The Senior class is marching by, With cap and gown and buoyant step Our Senior dignity we have kept. But how can we leave our dear old school ? We've tried so hard to keep each rule. Remember the time we were late for class And for punishment had to empty the trash? And don’t forget the Junior play, It sure went over in a Hillbilly way; Morning devotions were an inspiration, And Beta Club with initiation. The Junior-Senior banquet table Looked like a fairy-land in fables, Basketball with the fans screaming. Hey, Seniors! We've been dreaming. Forgive us for wandering back this way. We are here for a special occasion today, The time for which so long we've waited. We are about to be graduated. We know not what the future holds But with God’s help we will be bold, And bear each problem and surprise; Our lives a challenge, not a compromise. I’ve put the children to bed and I’m free to relax and watch a television program before retiring myself. To my surprise the announcer, Howard Martin, says the program tonight will be a survey of the class of '54 of Woodleaf High School. First, 1 see Marvin McDaniel, a famous scientist, dictating his discovery of a new drug to his efficient secretary, Joy Brown. She records this letter and sends a copy to a doctor in Charlotte, whose nurse is Mildred Foster. After telephone operator, Doris Beck, clears the line, Miss Foster gets a call through to Jerlean Murph, the X-ray technician at a near-by hos- pital. Her secretary is Elizabeth Collins. The next scene shows Mrs. Betty Gregory and Mrs. Lorene Coates talking with teacher Barbara Plummer about the grades of their children. As they finish talking Mr. Harrill’s secretary, Peggy Sheets, comes to tell Miss Plummer that she is wanted on the phone. It is Doris Donahue calling to say that her child has a cold. Now I see Jack Weant, president of a large clothing store, boarding a plane for New York, The airplane stewardess is Mary Lynn Painter. With Mr. Weant is his secretary, Mae Webb, and they’re going to a fashion show of new styles for women. Modeling the new creations is Wilma Safley. The next scene shows Bill McCulloh and Bob Waller talking as they look over the cattle on Bob’s ranch. Bill is giving him the estimate of the cost of plumbing for his new ranch house. They are interrupted by one of Bob’s foremen, Bill Motley, who comes to report on the day's happenings. The scene shifts and there is County Forest Warden, Mickey Raney, lecturing to a group of 4-H boys on setting out pine trees. County Home Demonstration Agent, Patricia Benson, is giving the girls a few points on how to dress well. © A very interesting view is that of Lewis Lineberger, civil engineer, telling his secretary, Juanita Doss, of some new highway plans. An amusing picture is that of Thomas Snider and Troy Speas, diesel mechanics, working with Jackie Barbee’s transfer truck. The last picture is an interview with Katrina Murph, a missionary home on furlough, by Jerlean Snider, the Bible teacher of Woodleaf School, and Bill Lyerly, a local minister. The announcer says he’s sorry but the engineer, Leroy Burgess, reports technical diffi- culties; therefore, he will be unable to continue. But luckily, this didn’t happen until I had viewed my former classmates in their success. Prophetess Vida Hammond Betty Gregory Testator Last Will And Cestament We, the Senior Class of Woodleaf High School, City of Woodleaf, County of Rowan, and State of North Carolina, being of sound mind and having the spirit to go forward, do hereby make, publish and declare this to be our last will and testament in manner and form as follows: ITEM 1 To Mr. Harrill, we leave our sincere gratitude for all that he has done for us.
