At last we were Freshmen. For eight years we had hoped and longed to be a part of the high school student body and now we found ourselves a slightly shy and timid, vet eager group of boys and girls entering the door of Woodleat High School with Mr. Paul Donnelly as our advisor. We worked hard that year and in due time were awarded promotions to the tenth grade, with Mrs. Geneva Harrill as our advisor. The year sped by, crowded with work and vcleasure and almost before we knew it we were a group of twenty-one “Jolly Juniors”, with Miss Current as our sponsor. Our first big task was our Maga- zine Drive, and what a time we nad achieving our one hundred fifty dollar goal! The highlight of this year was the Junior-Senior Banquet. Finally came the day of days for which we had striven four long, long years—the day on which we were officially called Seniors, wise, experienced dignified Seniors! Some of the out standing events of this year were: The Halloween Carnival, Senior Play, Junior-Senior Banquet, receiving our Class rings, and publishing our annual. Mrs. Chambers was our advisor, and our class officers were: President, Witlie Perrell; Vice-Presi- dent, Billy Steele; Secretary, Joyce Williams; Treasurer, Johnsie Pinkston. Our mascots were Kay Thomason and Nelson Liven- good. And now that we are about to close the door upon which we knocked as Freshmen, we wish to express our sincere apprecia- tion to our teachers, principal, fellow-students, and most of all to our parents who have made possible these twelve pleasant years. Now we say farewell with the hope that we may always remember and always practice our Motto, “Quitters Never Win; Winners Never Quit.” JOHNSIE PINKSTON, Historian WILLIE, PERRELE BosisAl Around MAROLINE SEAMON Most Mischievous MARY ANN WETMORE AARON GODBEY Most Courteous JANE MORGAN AARON GODBEY AARON GODBEY JOE ROBBINS Most Intelligent JOYCE WILLIAMS WILLIE PERRELE Best Dressed HELEN WETMORE LOR LATIVES Most Dependable JOYCE WILLIAMS WILLIE PERRELL Most Likely To Succeed WILLIE PERRELL LYDIA ANN BAILEY Cutest RENA MOORE PMULIL AY Sue EILIE Most Bashful MAROLINE SEAMON JOE ROBBINS Biggest Flirt REBA MOORE RICHARD CURRENT Se, lics Atier-allework in collecting 1dcis! dnd ticuiressiom | m@eoncrecieat class ever assembled here at Woodleat was completed, I uncov- ered the following 10cissconceming® ineroracm@lcdssom our The average height ol this group. ol dignilied=seniorsissive feet, s ix inches—the boys’ height being five feet, ten inches and the girls Tivewect, jour inches: Statistics show that the average weight of the boys is 155 pounds and thegirls 1135 pounds enoes remeeirommorton |: Blue and brown eyes prevail with a tie of 30% ‘each. Often, as strugglers, we have given up, When we might have captured the victor's cup, But we learned too late, when the night slipped down, How close we were to the golden crown. We never can tell how close we are, Our goal may be near when it seems atar, Let's stick to the fight when were hardest hit, It's when things go wrong that we musn't quit. BETTY ANN OVERMAN, Poet SEE AD SECTION IC) ee Prophecy In the winter of 1958, getting into my easy chair, I decided to relax by turning on the radio. The music was soft and sweet and | must have gone to sleep, and in my dreams I heard the announcer say something about the Class of ‘50 of Woodleaf High School. Imagine my surprise when I heard him announce Aaron Godbey had just returned trom his trip around the world in thirty minutes in his jet propelled plane, designed and constructed by Aaron, himself. As my vision moved to La Guardia Field, New York City, I saw Jane Morgan, now an airline stewardess for ihe Pan-American Airways, boarding a plane for Puerto Rico. The next scene changed, and | was at a John Powers Fashion Show in the heart of New York, and whom should I find modeling wedding gowns; none other than my old classmate, Helen Wetmore. Lo, as I turned away from this scene, | beheld a very familiar young man stand- ing on a baseball diamond, and I recognized Joe Robbins playing ball for the New York Yankees. Another scene appeared and lo, I was in an art gallery—There before my eyes was a huge picture, and below it was printed, By Marcline Benson, known the world over for her artistic ability. Joyce Grant reports for the Chicago Tribune, a writer of whom we can boast. She got her training working on the “Leaf.” In the Commercial World I saw Lydia Ann Bailey and Mildred Gentle, both famous typists and secretaries. I looked again and what could I see on one of the office doors in Raleigh but, Bill Steele, Lawyer,’ and who was that cute secretary taking dictation? Why it's my old classmate, Betty Ann Overman. The scene changed and I saw Willie Perrel] settled down on a large farm, raising children and potatoes. My vision was soon carried to dear old Woodleaf High School, and there I saw Johnsie Pinkston teaching the first grade their ABC’s. Then in another class I saw Richard Current, a well noted French teacher, and then in the principal's office I saw that Max Grant had won this honorable position. Reba Moore, who has just completed her nurse training at Johns Hopkins Hos- pital, is now a nurse at a Naval Hospital in San Francisco. Stil in San Francisco, my vision was carried to a little orange grove, and there I saw Katrina Livengood keeping house for her adorable little family. My vision changes and I find that Mary Ann Wetmore is doing great work os a missionary in China. There is another scene before my eyes and I see Norma Ruth Wetmore, who has just graduated from Eastern Carolina Teachers’ College, teaching the fourth grade in the city schools of Raleigh. The next scene appeared ana I saw Betty Pinkston happily married, living in Franklin and assistant manager at W. F. Woolworth’s. The last of my classmates were accounted for, as | heard someone calling ‘Rena, Rena,” arousing me from my sleep to go to my own work as a vocal soloist on the Bing Crosby Show.
