Jerry Stearns, the 1980 Woodlawn Colonels had an exciting yet disappointing season. The West End Lions took the season opener by a score of 21-7 and a lot of credit had to go to the Colonels. Twice, the Colonels were at the West End goal and failed to score. Woodlawn fumbled eight times and five times the Lions wound up on top of the ball. Late in the first quarter. Lacey connected with Clark on a 23 yard-pass for the Colonels only touchdown. West End racked up three touchdowns — two in the first half and one in the second half to defeat the Colonels by fourteen points. Promising to dip their hands in glue to help them to hold on to the ball, the Colonels surprised a Gardendale defense early in the first quarter by taking a 14-0 lead Rodgers on a 40 yard run. and Lacey on a one yard plunge, got the team ahead. But the Rockets were not intimidated in the least. After a regrouping of their defense, they came back to score two touchdowns in the second half and. in the final seconds the field goal that pulled them ahead to win the game 17-14. The Woodlawn Colonels used a stubborn defense in nipping equally defensive-minded Shades Valley. 7-6. Deep into the final period, it looked like neither team would put up any points. But with (ive minutes remaining in the game, quarterback Lacey broke loose and dashed 72 yards for the TD. Rex Freeman kicked what turned out to be the winning extra point With 2:15 left, the Mounties scored with a 24 yard pass, after an unsuccessful 2-point-after attempt they had to settle with the six points they earned to lose to the Colonels' 7-6. With new confidence, the Colonels took on a convincing 28-6 win over the Ensley Yellowjackets the next week. Woodlawn rushed 295 yards to score their four touchdowns; two coming from fullback Rogers. Harris scoring one from off the goalline, and the other coming from Brooks off a fifty-seven yard run. The icing on the cake was the Colonels' defense which held Ensley to 151 yards. Plunging ahead, they couldn’t be stopped even by the feeble attempt the Hayes Pacesetters gave at Lawson Field the following Friday Night. The Colonels took an early lead in the first quarter off a run equalling 73 yards by Brooks and clinched the sure win in the third-quarter with a blocked punt score from defensive-man Fitzsimmons. Offensively and defensively, through the rest of the game, the Colonels were superior. A disappointment awaited the Colonels next next week at Lawson Field against the Huffman Vikings. Although Woodlawn moved the ball they could not get across the goal-line. Capitalizing on an interception and Colonels’ penalties. Huffman scored twice (in the second and third quarters) to win the game. 14-0 Rebounding off a loss from Carver. The Green Machine entered the Bank's game with high hopes for a homecoming victory. An exciting game filled with blood, sweat, tears and rain ended with an overtime victory for Banks, regretfully. For Woodlawn it was three crucial plays. One was a questionable call by a headlinesman on a Woodlawn interception, another a breakdown in the Colonels' pass defense late in the game, and finally there was six inches to the goal and no time left. The Colonels, led by the outstanding leadership of quarterback Lacey, played a remarkable game under adverse conditions. They wanted it. Surprised by a passing offense and maintaining a consistent running game resulted in a 14-14 tie against Jackson-Olm the following week at Legion Field. The first touchdown was scored by fullback Harris, the final one was a one-yard keeper by Lacey. Two opportunities to win near the end of the game were missed 97 98 A great way to end a season. A high scoring offensive game and an aggressive defensive game all added up to an impressive last look at the 1980 Colonels. Clark. Body. Harris. Carter, and Etheredge were in on a Colonel defense which effectively checked Phillips most of the way. Another season come and gone. Some wins, some losses, some disappointments. Thanks. It would not have been possible without the efforts of our staff and sponsor to whom we will always be indebted. To Paul Bolus and the Student Council, we say. — Thank you — and we hope its sometimes insignificant meaning will express our immense gratitude for the monetary support. A multitude of thanks also goes to our parents for the understanding and patience they offered throughout the sometimes nerve-racking, temper-straining experience. To the WHS students, thanks for offering a multitude of personalities, character, and individualism for without such traits the monument to this year would not be possible. A very special thanks and a renewed dedication to the Everlasting Father, who proved to us that miracles do still occur. A part of ourselves is here in this book. We hope it will mean as much to you. the WHS Student Body, as it does to us. Melinda Shelton Alicia Dean James Busby 190 AUTOGRAPHS
