Woodlawn posted its first score with a twenty yard run and then a two yard plunge by Derrick May with 6:48 to go in the first period. In the second period Craddock passed for a pair of touchdowns: a twenty five yarder to Roger Langston and a twelve yarder to Jimmy Davis. Junior linebacker Charles Ross intercepted a pass and then went twenty yards for another touchdown . Woodlawn flashed a strong defense , blank- ing Carver 28-0. Vi.| ' «: ' W 183 Victory Over Valley 18-7 Woodlawn scored two touchdowns in the first half and put the icing on the cake with a final score late in the third quaner. The Colonels scored on their first possession with an immaculate 89 yard drive. Cody ' s extra point try hit the crossbar, leaving the score at 6-0. The brownies scored and converted in their first possession, making the score 7-6. Before the half was over, Crad- dock hit Roger Langston on a 50 yard bomb for 6 more points. The half time score stood at 12-7. The only scoring in the second half came late in the third quarter. After marching 80 yards, Willie Griggs scampered the final 5. The Colonels missed their second two points try of the evening as the Colonels won 18-7. 184 Colonels Exterminate Ensley 18-7 The Colonels unleased a punishing ground game against Ensley with running back Derrick May leading the way. With Ensley leading 7-6 in the first half, Woodlawn capitalized on an Ensley fumble, ending their hope for another touchdown. The Colonels drove 95 yards in 11 plays. The Craddock to Davis pass ended the drive with a touchdown. The point after attempt failed. Derrick May sprinted for the two other touchdowns in the second half bringing the final score to 18-7. 185 Colonels Hassle Hays 25-0 The Woodlawn Colonels picked up their fourth victory Thursday night at Lawson Field, defeating Hays 25-0. The defense was a standout led by Gil Wesley, James McGrew, Charles Ross and Dennis Rogers. Runningback Billy Johnson scored from the eight following an interception by Derrick McClannahan. The point after was good and the Colonels led 7-0. A bad snap from center started Woodlawn for its second touchdown. Derrick May scored from the three; the point after attempt was no good. Woodlawn drilled 62 yards in 10 plays just before the half, with May going in from the two on the last play of the half. The PAT was no good. Following Roger ' s fumble recovery at the Hayes 30 in the fourth quarter, Frank D ' Amico scored from the two. The PAT was no good and Woodlawn won 25-0. 186 Colonels Squeeze the Big Orange 20-0 Woodlawn picked up its fifth win of the season over the big orange of Huffman with a relentless running game and a stout defense. Midway in the first quarter, a Ben Chambliss punt went dead on the four. Huffman was soon forced to punt giving Woodlawn the ball on the opponents ' 49. Four plays later Billy Johnson went in for the first score of the game and David Cody added the extra point. The big play of the drive was a 38 yard Frank Craddock to Derrick McClannahan pass. The Colonels scored next on a 78 yard drive in the middle of the second quarter with Derrick May going over from the one. The point after was good. Early in the third quarter Woodlawn ' s Arthur McClenney intercepted the ball on the 20 and danced untouched into the end zone . This wrapped up the scoring as the point after attempt was no good . Final score Woodlawn 20 , Huffman . J J. IK IW 187 Colonels Ride Ramsay 24-12 The Woodlawn Colonels claimed a state playoff berth with their victory over Ramsay. Once again Derrick May led the Colo- nel offense, running for 174 yards in 20 carries and 4 touchdowns. Fullback Billy Johnson ran for the other touchdown. Johnson ran for 161 yards in 13 carries, balancing the Colonel offense. The Colonel defense was strong and held the rams to 127 yards rushing compared to Colonel ' s 407. Final score was 34-12. 188 Berry Slips by Colonels 12-3 The Colonels fought Berry in what proved to be a dirty affair in the mud and cold night air. Woodlawn drew first blood in the second quarter with a 27 yard field goal by David Cody. Woodlawn 3-0 but not for long. With 4:12 left in the half, Berry scored; the point after attempt was blocked and Berry led 6-3 at halftime. Berry iced the cake in the fourth quarter with another score. The point after attempt was no good. Berry came away with a 12-3 victory. 189 Colonels Wreck Raiders 20-12 Woodlawn racked up another victory against Phillips on their way to the regional championship. Quarterback Frank Craddock led the team in a steady drive , which ended with Craddock running for the final yard for a touchdown . Cody kicked the extra point. In the second quarter Billy Johnson scored after a Colonel drive of thirty one yards. Phillips got the next touchdown in the third quarter but missed the point after attempt . Willie Griggs got the final score of the evening for Woodlawn after a fifty seven yard drive of six plays. Cody made the point after attempt. Phillips scored once but again missed the point after attempt, ending the game 20-12. 190 Colonels Rip Jets 12-0 For the first time since 1971, Woodlawn defeated Banks. The game was a low scoring defensive battle. However, it didn ' t look as if it would be that way as the Colonels took the opening kickoff and marched 82 yards in 15 plays. Frank Craddock kept the snap and rolled around right end for the final 5 yards. David Cody ' s try for the conversion was blocked, so the score remained 6-0. Banks then mounted a counter attack in the form of a drive that went all the way to the Colonel 19 before the Jets lost the ball on downs. Woodlawn ' s next threat was killed by a Woodlawn interception in the end zoije. It looked as if the scoring was over, but in the fourth quarter Woodlawn intercepted a Jet pass. Four plays later. Derrick May ran 29 yards around right end to cap the scoring and give the Colonels a 12-0 victory. In the absence of Coach Gerelds the team dedicated the win to him . Tuscaloosa Whips Colonels In the first round of the state playoffs the Colonels were upset by Tuscaloosa. It was Woodlawn ' s first appearance since 1969 in the state playoff action. Woodlawn ' s only major drive was in the first qu arter when Willie Griggs ran for a forty-four yard touch- down, but was called back because of illegal procedure. The remainder of the night was a hard fought battle. The Colonels could not seem to get up to their usual playing potential and lost 19-0. 192 il B-Team Football % ir ... % . « ROW 1: C. Busby, T.
