N Keep interested in your own career It is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time. Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, they too have their own story. If you compare yourself with others, you may become vain and bitter; for always there are greater and lesser persons than yourself 1 •;; ' . . MhjQA 9 ■ Si iM ' '  ■.. 1: Be Yourself! Take kindly the counsel of the years, gracefully surrendering the things of youth. Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune. Do not distress yourself with imaginings. 10 11 You are a child of the universe, no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. 12 A nd whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. 13 Therefore, be at peace with God; whatever you conceive Him to be, and whatever your labors and aspiration, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace with your soul. 14 15 ff ■ 3 3E M !! It wasn ' t exactly an artistic success, but for those who came to see Tony Nathan, there was plenty to see. Nathan carried the ball 21 times for 266 yards and scored all five touchdowns in the Colonels ' 35-21 victory. Woodlawn lost six fumbles, but there were some spots of good playing with the many inexperienced players showing signs of better days to come . Sophomore fullback Dennis Rogers teamed with Nathan to give Woodlawn a potent one-two running attack, rushing 13 times for a tough 68 yards in the heavy traffic of the Ensley line . All night the Woodlawn offensive line opened giant holes for their ball carriers . The line , made up of David Rye, Reginald Greene, Howard Casebere, James Cottingham, and Greg McKnight deserves tremendous credit. Most of Woodlawn ' s 374 rushing yards came because of their fine effort. A fine defensive unit, led by Rocha McKinstry, held Ensley to only 142 rushing yards. McKinstry, playing in his first varsity game , made some outstanding plays and was strongly supported by Gil Wesley, James Morris, Brad Hendrix, Joe Abbruzzo, Howard Ross, and Tommy Rue. ■npi p ■ PPIPIH IH , i Pj BI Efc ' v. fl H B k ZZ I I IPnfflffHr - --|| Mb ' HH 9k PI •1 J L . - y Colonels Haunt Hayes The Woodlawn Colonels picked up their second victory of the season at Lawson Field Thursday night, September 12, by pounding the Hayes Pacesetters, 33-0. It was a fine team effort for the Colonels. Most of the Colonel ' s offensive punch was on the ground. Seven ball carriers teamed for 159 yards. Tony Nathan rushed four times for 38 yards, scoring on 20 and 3-yard carries in the first quarter. Sophomore halfback Billy Johnson was the game ' s leading rusher, carrying the ball 14 times for 52 yards and a 3-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Fullback Dennis Rogers scored on a one-yard burst in the third quarter. However, passing was a big part of the offense for the Colonels, loo. Denny Ragland completed six passes for 98 yards and a 36-yard touchdown pass to split-end Jimmy Davis. Ryan Howell kicked three extra points. The Colonel defense was truly devastating. Led by Rocha McKinstry, Gil Wesley, Howard Ross, Roger Langston, and Frank Craddock, the Colonel defense held Hayes to two first downs and 22 total yards. Linebacker Rocha McKinstry set up two touchdowns with a pass interception and a fumble recovery . Defensive back Frank Craddock had two interceptions. Colonel punter Brad Hendrix kept the Hayes offensive backed up with 55 and 40-yard punts. Colonels Rip Raiders The third win of the year wasn ' t an easy victory, but in the end the Woodlawn Colonels persevered and defeated the Phillips Red Raiders 14-0. As the shut-out indicates, this game the defense provided the stars. Tony Nathan was limited to only 90 yards in 19 carries by the Phillips defense, which also had a pretty good night. However, during the second half, when Woodlawn scored both touchdowns, he accu- mulated 64 of his yards. This included an eight-yard touchdown, and a 13-yard carry to the goal line where he fumbled and center Howard Casebere recovered in the end zone. All the while, Colonel defenders Tommy Rue, Joe Abbruzzo, James Cottingham, Moose Morris, Gil Wesley, Howard Ross, Roger Langston, and Rocha McKinstry were making things tough for the Raiders. Phillips reached the Woodlawn eight-yard line in the second quarter; but lost the ball on downs, and in the fourth quarter moved to the four . Again the Woodlawn defense held and the Colonels took over on downs. Besides Nathan, other offensive standouts were Frank Craddock, filling in for the injured Denny Rag- land , Dennis Rogers , with 43 yard s in ten carries , and Stan Arrington . -71 2! Colonels Roll Over Rebels The Woodlawn Colonels moved to their founh win of the year in downing the Vestavia Rebels 14-8. For the second consecutive week the defense led the way, holding the Rebels scoreless until less than three min- utes remained in the game. Vestavia got an early chance when the Rebels stopped Woodlawn at mid-field after the opening kickoff and forced punter Brad Hendrix to muff the kick. They then drove to the Colonel ' s 12, but on a fourth down play Tony Nathan intercepted a pass at the four and raced untouched down the sideline to put Woodlawn ahead 6-0, as the extra point was wide. A pass interception and long return by Steve Martin stopped a Rebel bid later in the first period, and, later in the half, two Woodlawn drives were stopped by interceptions. In the third quarter , the first of two fumble recoveries by Moose Morris set Woodlawn up at their own 37 . Eight plays later Dennis Rogers ran one yard to push Woodlawn ahead 14-0 as Nathan ran for two points. Late in the game, Roger Langston intercepted a pass to end a Rebel drive at the seven, but, after the punt, Vestavia drove in for their only score of the evening. Nathan ran 23 times for 148 yards behind fine blocking by the offensive line, to lead the Colonels. Rocha McKinstry, Howard Ross, Tommy Rue, and Steve Martin led the Colonel defenders. I . -. ZJI Woodlawn Edges Erwin The Woodlawn Colonels ran iheir perfect record to 5-0 by holding off the Erwin Eagles 20-9. The Erwin defense just couldn ' t stop the Colonels ' powerful running attack which pounded out 247 yards, led by Dennis Rogers and Tony Nathan . The Colonels swept 68 yards in 12 plays for a touchdown on the first possession as Nathan gained 33 yards in six carries and Denny Ragland had a 22-yard pass to Howard Ross, with Nathan finally scoring from the two. Then Erwin began to apply some pressure with a Tommy Fields ' p-mt pinning the Colonels on their own two- yard line. But the Colonels handled that pressure by mounting a 98-yard drive for a touchdown. Nathan got 72 of those yards in five carries including a 47-yard dash. Fullback Dennis Rogers had a key 13-yard gain and scored from the one for a 13-0 halftime lead. The scrappy Eagles had an upset on their minds as they cut the Woodlawn lead to four points, 13-9 in the third quarter. However, the Colonels put together a poised 14-play, 63 -yard touchdown march halfway through the second half to ice the victory. In this pivotal drive, Nathan rambled 44 yards in nine carries with an eight-yard run for points and Denny Ragland had an important nine yard pass to Stan Anington. For the night, Touchdown Tony had 160 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries. Quarterback Denny Ragland completed two of four passes for 31 yards. The Colonels ' defensive front line led by James Cottingham held the Eagles to 168 rushing yards and their leading rusher to one touchdown. Cottingham made two great defensive plays just before the half in throwing Eagle runningbacks for two and three yard losses after the Eagles had driven to the Colonel two yard line. The Colonels ' defensive secondary teamed with the front line to hold quarterback Marion Gillespie to six pass completions in 19 attempts. ' m: ' M : w i f Colonels Squeeze The Big Orange The fired-up Huffman Vikings came to Lawson Field on Thursday night, October 10, ready to destroy the Colonel running attack led by Tony Nathan. Huffman started the game with the best defense against the Colonels, not letting Woodlawn get the ball. The Vikings pushed 73 yards in 15 running plays for the first score of the game. Larry Thornton added the PAT. The strategy almost worked. The tough Huffman defense held Nathan to 114 yards on 21 carries. However, the Vikings forgot that there were 10 other Colonels on the field. Quarterback Denny Rag- land decided the Viks were paying too little attention to his passing game, and promptly threw a 42- yard touchdown pass to junior wide receiver Jimmy Davis. Ryan Howell kicked the extra point. Nathan added a seven-yard touchdown romp in the second quarter for a 13-7 halftime lead. Ragland delivered another strike to Davis on the first play of the second half. The 65 -yard scoring toss ran the score to 19-7 and broke the game open for Woodlawn. In the final period, fullback Dennis Rogers scored on a one-yard plunge and gave the Colonels a 25-7 victory. The win gave Woodlawn a perfect 6-0 record. It «£- V- Colonels Slaughter Rams The undefeated Woodlawn Colonels crucified the hopelessly outmanned Ramsay Rams in recording a homecoming victory for the second consecutive year. The final score is merely proof: Woodlawn 61, Ramsay 12. Throughout the contest, Ramsay was at the mercy of the powerful Colonels. Had Woodlawn not made wholesale substitutions midway of the third quarter, the margin of victory would have been much wider. Tony Nathan, behind beautiful blocking, ran through Ramsay ' s defensive ranks like a freight train. Nathan carried the ball 13 times from scrimmage and gained 228 yards and 6 touchdowns, hauled back 2 kickoffs for 100 yards and 1 touchdown, a punt for 15 yards, and for good measure added a 2 point conversion . After Ramsay returned the opening kickoff for a touchdown, Woodlawn came right back with Nathan scoring from the 17 . Ryan Howell kicked the point. After a Ramsay fumble, Nathan again scored, this time from the 22, to make the score 13-6. After another Ram fumble, Dennis Rogers scored from the 13 , and Nathan ran for a 2 point conversion . In the second quarter, Nathan, in quick succession, scored on a 16-yard run, a 4-yard run, and an 87-yard kickoff return. Late in the second quarter, Ramsay scored their second touchdown, and at halftime the score was Woodlawn 41, Ramsay 12. Early in the third quarter, Nathan scored on runs of 67 and 71 yards and then retired for the night. The final Woodlawn score came on a one-yard run by Billy Johnson. The kick gave Howell 5 extra points for the night . The offensive line blocked excellently all night, and the defense deserves commendations for their outstanding play. Colonels Burn Brownies The unbeaten Woodlawn Colonels used a potent ground attack and an opportunistic defense in squeaking by the Jones Valley Brownies 14-13. Twice the Colonels came back from one-touchdown deficits to edge the Brownies and to run the Colonels ' perfect record to 8-0. The Brownies drew first blood , scoring after recovering a Tony Nathan fumble to make the score 7-0. The Colonels quickly tied the score with a 70-yard drive for a touchdown. Nathan scored on a 24-yard run and Ryan Howell kicked the extra point to tie it at 7-7 . Valley regained the lead in the second quarter following an interception. However, Brad Hendrix fought through to block the extra point and the halftime score was 13-7. The Colonel defense harrassed Valley into a fatal mistake early in the third quarter, with Hendrix recovering a fumble. Six plays later, Nathan scored on a 15-yard run. Howell added what was to be the deciding point. Valley threatened late in the game, but a field goal attempt sailed wide. Nathan, with 182 yards in 22 carries, and Dennis Rogers, along with the offensive line, led the Colonel offense. Defensive standouts were Brad Hendrix, Rocha McKinstry, and Gil Wesley. Jets Fly By Colonels The much-awaited Woodlawn-Banks game was played on Friday night, November 9, at I egion Field, before a record- breaking crowd of 42 , 000 . To no surprise , it was a tough , hard -fought game, but the Jets proved too much for the Fighting Colonels. Rocha McKinstry and Gil Wesley led the Colonel defense which gave probably its best effort of the year against the potent Jets who were averaging over 45 points a game , through eight wins this season. They threw Rutledge seven times for 74 yards in losses. Woodlawn had great field position following a 12-yard Rut- ledge punt and drove to the Banks 24 where the Jets ' defense held, and a Ryan Howell field goal fell short. The Colonel defenders held Banks without a first down until the second play of the second quarter. The Jets ' first score didn ' t come until there was 3:43 left in the first half when Jerry Murphree raced 21 yards for the score. Ronnie Whitten ' s extra point try was wide . Two minutes later Banks scored another touchdown , going 54 yards in just two plays. Both were Rutledge passes; the first going 22 yards to Jerry McDonald and the second 32 yards to Bob Grefseng. This time a two-point try was no good. In the third quaner , the Woodlawn defense held the Jets after they mounted a six-minute drive to the Colonel 14. But the next time Banks got the ball , they scored from 51 yards out in just four plays. A six-yard Rutledge pass to McDonald set up Murphree ' s touchdown run from the 16 . A pass for two again failed . The Colonels then drove for their only score of the night . The drive covered 68 yards in 14 plays that included the Colonels ' only pass completion of the night. With fourth down and one at the Jets ' 13, Nathan bounced off a couple of Banks tackles , rolled around end and in for the score with 5:11 left in the game. Ryan Howell kicked the point after. The Banks defense held Tony Nathan to 114 yards and one touchdown in 31 carries. Brad Hendrix, Gil Wesley, Rocha McKinstry , and James Morris led the Colonel defense which definitely gave the Jets their toughest test of this year . The loss gave the Colonels an 8-1 record with all hopes of a playoff berth gone . 236 v 237 Colonels Carve Carver The Woodlawn Colonels bounced back from last week ' s disappointing loss to the Banks Jets by earning an uninspired 12-0 victory over the Carver Rams at Fair Park. The Colonels appeared slug- gish, but still proved to be too strong for the battling Rams. The game capped off a brilliant career for Colonel runningback Tony Nathan, who rushed for 116 yards in 23 carries and scored one touchdown. The Colonel offensive line did an excellent job as the Colonels rushed for 231 yards. The offensive line has done an outstanding job this year and deserves a lot of credit for the Colonels ' powerful running attack. Woodlawn ' s defense provided the Colonels their first scoring opportunity as Tommy Rue blocked a Carver punt at the Colonel 47-yard line. Woodlawn scored from there in only three plays, with full- back Dennis Rogers blasting over from 13 yards out. The attempted conversion failed. Woodlawn scored again late in the second quarter following an exchange of punts . The Colonels marched 63 yards in five plays for the score. Nathan gained 57 yards on the drive, capping it with a 13-yard burst over right tackle for the score. The two-point conversion try failed. The Colonel defense held the Rams to eight first downs and 129 total yards. Carver ' s deepest push was to the Colonel 31-yard line. Other Carver possessions were stopped on interceptions by Rue, Scottie Taylor, and Roger Langston, and a fumble recovery by Rocha McKinstry. Many people played an important role in the Colonels ' 9-1 season. Rocha McKinstry, Gil Wesley, Brad Hendrix, James Cottingham, Howard Ross, Tommy Rue, Steve Manin, Danny Davis, Roger Langston, James Morris, and Scottie Taylor made up the punishing Colonel defense which held opposing teams to less than nine points per game. Howard Casebere, David Rye, Reginald Green, Greg McKnight , and James Cottingham moved out opposing defensive lines for the potent Colonel running attack led by Tony Nathan and strongly supported by Dennis Rogers and Billy Johnson. Quar- terback Denny Ragland gave the Colonels a good passing attack by throwing to Stan Arrington and Jimmy Davis. B -Team Football 1974 ROW 1: J. Breitenfield, B. Keeble, B. McDowell, J.
