Besides maintaining good grades, other qualities are considered. These are leadership, participation In community affairs, reputable character, service and involvement at school. The 1974 Woodlog takes great pride in naming the winners of this coveted title - The Colonel 3nd the Lady of W.H.S. - Steve Mosley and Lori Sumner. The Colonel and Lady of Woodlawn High School 207 1974 Woodlog Dedication Coach Tandy Geralds Friendship has as many planes as human life. The men with whom we share common pleasures are on the lowest plane. Those with common interests are on a higher plane. Still higher, are those with whom we share the same social customs and tastes. Our best friends, however, lie in the highest plane we can reach. They are those with whom we consciously share the spiritual purpose of our lives. This highest friendship is as precious as it is rare. Woodlawn feels lucky to have found such a friend in Coach Tandy Geralds. Euclidean Math FIRST ROW: Mrs. Wells. Susan Baldis. Betsy Humphrey. Woodlawn went ahead on a 29-yard Buz Walsh field goal set up by a 42-yard Tony Nathan punt return, but the Jackets, with less than two minutes remaining, went in for the lead. Tumed-on Ensley was almost turned off by a determined Woodlawn team as the two rivals battled to the finish, with the Jackets finally taking the victory 7-3. The end of the first quarter saw the score nothing to nothing. By the end of the second quarter, Ensley had pushed to the three, but Mike Allison stopped that drive. Colonels 1st Win, 14-3 The Woodlawn Colonels defeated a scrappy Hayes Pacesetter team 14-3 at Larson Field. Tony Nathan scored both Colonel: touchdowns on runs of two and three yards. The scoring started in the first quarter by driving 68 yards in 7 plays. Nathan scored and Walsh added the PAT. In the second half, after Woodlawn took over on the 12. Nathan scored again and for the final point. Walsh kicked the PAT. Other Colonels adding to the force of the game were Manuel Jones and Bill White. 234 Howard Ross - Junior Linebacker Kirk Dortch - Senior Split End Bobby Bradley - Senior Defensive End Alan Weeks - Senior Tackle Calvin Rumph - Junior Tackle Gil Wesley - Sophomore Guard James Cottingham - Junior Guard Louis Lollar - Senior Tackle Bucky Wesley - Junior Guard Anthony Montalto - Senior End Anthony Abbruzzo - Senior Linebacker Ronnie Meadows - Senior Tackle 235 Colonels Romp Rebels 41-14 Victory number 2 in 3 starts came to the Colonels on Sept. 20 against a battling Vcstavia team. Tailback Tony Nathan led the Conquest with one of the most explosive showings ever by a city high school gridder. Nathan, while accounting for 410 yards total offense, scored touchdowns on runs of 19. 19. and 77 yards, a kick-off return for 90 yards, and also threw a touchdown pass to Mike Crauel. The other Colonel score was on a 20-yard Buz Walsh to Howard Ross pass. Walsh also kicked 5 extra points in as many attempts. The entire offensive line performed excellently, while Peyton Zarzour was a defensive standout. Manuel Jones - Senior Wing Back Woodlawn Rips Eagles, 21-6 There was no doubt in the minds of those present at the football game between Woodlawn and Erwin - the Colonels were in full control, as they gathered 289 yards in 58 offensive snaps. The Colonels also got the best of the turnovers in intercepting three Erwin passes and recovering one fumble. Seven plays after the opening kickoff. Mike Allison, captain of the Colonels, blasted into the end zone from the Eagles eight and Buz Walsh kicked the extra point. Tony Nathan, who had another outstanding game in picking up 203 yards in 27 attempts, scored the remaining Woodlawn touchdowns. His first came in the second quarter after teammate Bobby Thompson intercepted a pass. The third touchdown, taken in by Nathan and converted by Walsh, gave the fighting Colonels the final score of 21 points. Mike Allison posed a running threat for the Woodlawn team by getting 91 yards in 17 carries. Credit must also be given to players Joey Jett, Keith Carter, Skipper Benson, and Mike Grauel. 238 Steve Martin - Junior Cornerback Ronnie Box - Senior Tackle Sam Black - Senior Tailback Buz Walsh - Senior Quarterback Reginald Green - Junior Tackle Joey Jett - Senior Center Mike Bynum - Junior Center Bill White - Senior Safety Albert Benefield - Senior Fullback 239 Woodlawn Wins Wildly, 35-12 The Colonels played probably iheir best game of the season on October 5 against the number one ranked Huffman Vikings in front of the largest crowd ever at Lawson Field. Tony Nathan led the way with 231 yards rushing, scoring along with a two-point conversion. Other Colonel points were added by Tommy Conwell in the second quarter on a 27-yard return of an Interception, and Buz Walsh kicked 3 extra points. Offensive line members Brad Hendrix, Alan Weeks, Skipper Benton, Joey Jett, and Keith Carter opened holes for Nathan all night. A fired-up Colonel defense held Huffman to only 12 points with Conwell, Bobby Thompson, and Howard Ross leading the way. 240 Mike Allison - Senior Fullback David Rye - Junior Tackle Keith Dorricott - Junior Safety Bobby Thompson - Senior Safety Ryan Howell - Junior Guard Peyton Zarzour - Senior Linebacker Robert Lukasik - Junior Linebacker William Rohar - Junior Linebacker Phillip Allison - Junior Safety 241 Woodlawn Wins the Big Knocking off an undefeated city team for the second week in a row. the Colonels of Woodlawn, led by Tony Nathan showed their boosters how it is done. They were heroes, whether as offense or defense; Tommy Rue. recovering two fumbles and blocking the West End extra point: Mike Allison, butting his head into enemy defense time after time: and other defenders Keith Carter. James Cottingham. Peyton Zarzour. and Brad Hendrix. Woodlawn drove in with the opening kickoff, going 66 yards in 13 plays. Nathan went the final nine and Buz Walsh kicked the PAT. West End went ahead in the third quarter with a 12-7 lead. Woodlawn started the final drive from their own 25 and eleven plays later the Colonels had their winning points. The clincher came on a 29-yard Nathan run. It was a memorable night for the Colonels and all supporters of Woodlawn High School. Tony Nathan racked up a total of 214 yards In 32 carries and brought his total to 1030 with 13 id's, unofficially. Outstanding defenders were Keith Carter and Tommy Rue. 242 Colonels Stopped by Jets, 17-7 The battlefield was Legion Field and the Battling opponents were the Jets from Banks and the Colonels from Woodlawn High School. For j while it appeared that the Colonels would be successful in overthrowing the foe, but the lead of 7 points gained early by a 33-yard Tony Nathan run and a Buz Walsh extra point was not enough. It was not an easy victory and the Colonels fough: all the way. led by the determined defense. Woodlawn Downs Parker, 29-6 The Colonels push their season's record to 6-2 with a 29-6 domesticating of the Parker Thundering Herd. Bobby Thompson and Tony Nathan led the victory - Thompson with 4 interceptions and Nathan with 3 touchdowns. Woodlawn put points on the scoreboard early when Nathan carried the opening kickoff 35 yards to paydirt. Buz Walsh followed with the first of his three successful extra points. The Colonels pushed the score to nine to nothing when the Parker punter fumbled and was tackled for a safety. The score went up another 6 points when cor-neiback Steve Martin picked up a pitch-out and darted 45 yards. Nathan added 2 touchdowns on runs of 25 and 27 yards. The Colonels' defense was outstanding all night, as Thompson. Martin, and Gary Speers all had outstanding performances. 245 Tony Nathan - Junior Denny Ragland - Junior Stan Arrington - Junior Tailback Quarterback Quarterback Mike Grauel - Senior Splitend Dick Coffee - Senior End Scottie Taylor - Junior Tailback Ronald Mumm - Senior. Quarterback Keith Carter - Senior. Guard Skipper Benton - Senior. Guard Colonels Edge Phillips 14-13 The Colonels kepi alive their playoff hopes by sneaking past Phillips 14-13. Tony Nathan opened Woodlawn's scoring with a two-yard first quarter run. Midway through the 2nd quarter, Nathan limped from the field with a broken foot. Bill White replaced him, and scored on a one-yard plunge in the 4th quarter. Ronald Mumm passed to Howard Ross for the two-point conversion which provided the margin of victory. Gil Wesley was a standout on defense for the Colonels. The victory boosted Woodlawn's record to 7-2 on the year. Roderick Washington - Senior Wingback Tommy Rue - Junior Rover 247 Rams Routed by Colonels, 14-0 In their final regular season game of the year, the crppled Colonels eked out a 14-0 victory over the Ramsay Rams. Woodlawn had to play without the services of seven injured players. About the only good news that came from the game was the fact that Wood-lawn could achieve victory without those seven players, among whom was All-Star Tony Nathan. However, lowly Ramsay limited the Colonels to 105 yards, and this news is not good. Woodlawn' victory was based mainly on the ineptness of the Ram's punting game. Due to this severe breakdown, Woodlawn was almost giver, their two first quarter scores, having to move only 24 and 6 yard for the points. Woodlawn got their first big break when a Ramsay punt, much hurried by a combination of unfavorable circumstances. went out of bounds on the Ramsay 24, six yards behind the original line of scrimmage. After the first down lost 6 yards. Ronald Mumm got 16 yards to the 14. One play later, Peyton Zarzour carried three tacklers and the ball into the endzonc for an eleven yard touchdown. Joe Abbruzzo, In this varsity debut, added the extra point. Ramsay's next offensive series ended at their own 32, but a bad snap went over the punter's head and Woodlawn got the ball on the Ram six. On the third play. Bill White dove towards the end zone but fumbled the ball and James Cottingham fell on It to preserve the final score of the night. The remainder of the game was strictly defense. as the Colonels made only one more assault into Ramsay territory. That drive stalled at the nine, and Abbruzzo missed a 26 yard field goal attempt. Standouts on the Colonel defense, which held Ramsay to only 104 total yards, were Brad Hendrix. James Cottingham, Phillip Allison, and Anthony Montalto. The Colonels ended the season 8-2 and barely missed a playoff berth. 248 B-Team City Champs ROW 1: Ricky Bradford. Tim Jacks. Roy Garzarek. Lawrence Shellnut, John O'Hare. John Rouse.
