Coffee made its only score by intercepting a Wood lawn pass, but the Colonels came back with touchdowns by David Langner, Manville, and Leathers. This initial game set the standard for the rest of Woodlawn ' s season. The Colonels gained 28 points in the first quarter, before a crowd of almost 15,000 gathered in Legion Field. Woodlawn kept itself out of trouble with interceptions by Anderson (2), Bishop, Osborne, and Wood. Fullback Wayne Leathers accounted for 3 touchdowns and David Langner for 2. SCOTT LANGNER DOUG OSBORNE BOBBY HOWELL WAYNE LEATHERS On to victory and to state Scoreless opponents The game with Minor opened with an excit- ing return by David Langner on the opening kick-off for 92 yards. The Colonels followed by scoring twice more in both the first and sec- ond quarters. The defense, led by guard Lee Bean, kept Minor from advancing, and Chuck Whitaker, Doug Osborne, and Mike Bishop in- tercepted four Minor passes to keep the oppo- nents to a scoreless game. Doug Osborne added the extra point and after another Langner score and Osborne kick, we led 21-0 at the half. Harbuck, Manville, and Burns scored in the last half, and a two point conversion was made by Terry Anderson. Phillips wearily came back and scored once in the last 3 min- utes. Unaccountably, the Vikings scored in the same quarter, giving them the unique distinction of being the first team to score against the Colonels in the 1st quarter of any game. Woodlawn defense took over then and held Huffman immobile for the rest of the game. Parks, Leathers, Wood, and Manville scored. David Langner and Wayne Leathers led the scor- ing in this game, aided by Rogers and Anderson re- covering Ramsey fumbles. Score: RICK MEADOWS . i WHS Rips Jets 54 in Clinic Bowl Action The coldest game of the year was exciting for both sides. Within 4 minutes of the beginning kick-off, Woodlawn led 7-0, from a drive by Langner and Leathers. Banks stormed back in the same quarter for a score but was unable to make the two -point conversion. Early in the second quarter, Banks threatened again but Robbins inter- cepted a pass in the Colonel end zone, Langner and Robbins put it as 4-6, but a fumble gave Banks a new chance and the score at half was 14-14. Late in the third quarter. Parks passed to David Langner for another 6. Halfway into the fourth quarter Harbuck sailed down the field 69 yards and was tackled on the 4-yard line. Three plays later, Leathers plunged in for 6. Banks came up to score, making it 28-20, but failed to advance further. This game was the climax of a great season for the Colonels, giving diem a 10-0-0 record and the city championship for 1969-70. Homecoming- A Rough Game 56 All the excitement and color of the Home- coming activities did not lessen the excite- ment of a close game. The first and only score in the first half was a 46 -yard field goal kicked by Greg Gantt. The next score came in the fourth quarter, when Ensley made the score 7-3. David Langner, Bob Parks, and Wayne Leathers combined to speed down the field and score. Osborne ' s punt was good. Later in the fourth quarter, Ensley punted, Leathers took it, and with help from Langner and Harbuck, drove in 49 yards, Osborne kicked the extra point, and the scoreboard read 17-7 with 53 seconds left. Woodlawn thoroughly enjoyed a successful homecoming. 57 The Last Game: Woodlawn Meets Lee in Montgomery Lee Breaks Through Woodlawn picked up a lead early in this game, thanks to Gantt ' s kicking and Leather ' s and Langner ' s running. But, Lee overcame our 13-7 edge with the powerful running of Paul Spivey, who was responsible for 2 touchdowns, one on a 93 yard run. A Lee punt return put them ahead 28-13, and that ' s how it stood when time ran out for the Colonels. End- less speculation can be made on the crucial scores of this game. One fact is clear; Woodlawn ' s team, holding Lee down to 7 first downs, played a better and harder game than ever before. Lee ' s victory hinged on the powerful running of two or three men, and without them they would have been lost. In addition, our team spirit and the enthusiasm shown by the Colonel fans were not dented by their defeat. We anx- iously await our next chance in ' 71. 58 Wait ' Til Next Year Baby Colonels —1969 33i£ D ROW 1: Lynn Nichols, Robert Cleveland, Jimmy Taylor, Fugie Wallace, Joey Miller, Vern Farnum, David O ' Hare, Larry Abbott, Ricky Pike, Mike Watson, Steve Chandler, Mike Jenkins. He is first a good man, a respected coach, and loyal friend to the students of WHS. He has the warm under- standing which we all need. He has inspired us with a self confidence we needed and will for all our lives greatly appreciate. He has given un- tiringly of his time for the benefit of his students and for WHS. We love him for him- self as well as for the patience, wisdom and interest he has shown in the -problems of the younger generation. Coach Bill Burgess urges us to do the best we can at all times, whether on the football field or on the field of life. This is his contribution toward building a better world. ' D ' t ; • It is at Woodlawn Baptist Church that I have found true happiness, for it is there that I have come to know Jesus in a wonderful and personal way. It is through Him that my church has provided me with many wonderful opportunities and experiences, and the leadership is one in which the young people take pride. It is with these young people that I invite you students to share your faith and love for Jesus with us. Connie Lackey I come to Woodlawn Baptist Church because I enjoy the friendliness of the members and receive benefit from the ded- icated teachers and workers. Woodlawn Baptist is a large and warm place and has a place for everyone. Rob Coberly 290 Fellowship at our church is the great- est, I don ' t know what I would do with- out it.
