As you turn the pages of this book, you will bring to life the memorable events of this school year—the hours of study, the frivolous moments, the athletic events; the crowded halls, and the lasting friendships that were formed. It is our hope that this book will bring to mind these cherished memories in years to come and that it will inspire you to maintain the high ideals that are so much a part of our school. Companionship Miss Claude Dowling Dedication For her influence on the many students who have known her as teacher, counselor, and friend we dedicate this book to Miss Claude Dowling. She has given untiringly of her time for the benefit of her students and for Woodlawn High School. The dedication of the Woodlog is an expression of our deep appreciation. 1962 4 Our Principal Mr. Ralph Martin Knowledge and understanding are the primary requisites for leadership. Mr. Ralph Martin understands Woodlawn from the level of the lowiest freshman to the most respected member of the faculty. His knowledge of Woodlawn has enabled him to give equal consideration to all departments and to provide leadership necessary for the betterment of our school. Under his guidance Woodlawn will continue to move forward as it has done in the past. The P.T.A. of Woodlawn High School is constantly busy with projects to improve the school and to improve relationships among students, parents, and teachers. It consists of fathers, mothers, faculty and other interested adults. 6 r niTT Department Heads 1962 The responsibility of each department head is to plan anti supervise the work, and arrange the schedule for each teacher in his department. The department heads work to establish good, hard-working classes which will benefit all students. Accelerated classes have been organized in the math. English, history, and science departments. There are also classes in science and in math which are not college preparatory. Mrs. Bates. English teacher, offers special help in reading to students who want it. The club's two vice presidents choose sides are alternately responsible for the program . All club members must either bo taking Latin at the time of membership or must have previously taken it. Most of the members correspond with a French penpal. They learn to sing French songs and do old folk dances. 18 El Pasatiempo Members of the Spanish Club hove fun learning about the customs, traditions, and history of the Spanish speaking countries. The Bible Study Club The Bible Study Club is open to anyone who is interested in studying the Bible. It also is designed to increase your knowledge of the characters of the Bible. The club’s aim is to give student an opportunity to exercise their own ideal , judgements, and initiatives. It is managed by the art student . Member design and muke numerous item among which are Christmas cards, ash trays, vases, and paintings. Many members participate in the city’s annual art show. The Ixreuwcnhoek Science Club was organized in 1922 when Woodlawn High School first opened. A second club was formed, and later the sponsors decided to consolidate these two clubs and form the Utopian Science Club. Recently the Chem-Bio-Physics Club united with this club. Every semester each member makes a science project. Many member have won stale and national prizes in contest and fairs. Library Club of 1961-62 Thr Library Club, organized by Mi Mildred Johnston in 1938, U limited to those students who have been approved by the librarian as library assistants. Miss Katherine Robbins i now sponsor. One of their projects is preparing the monthly Library Bulletin, which i given to faculty members and to all session rooms. The Beatrice Hannon F.T.A. was numed in honor of our girls’ advisor. Miss Beatrice Hannon, in 1954. It became a club when the membership of the Charles A. Brown F.T.A. became too large. This F.T.A. is affiliated with A.E.A. ond N.E.A.; and its many activities include helping teachers, working on profitable projects and serving at classroom teachers’ meetings. Mrs. Pollic Wells is th« sponsor of the Charles A. Brown F.T.A. 23 Personality Club 1961-62 The purpose of the Personality Club is to improve its members’ personalities. To become a member, a girl must be willing to work hard striving to develop her personality. Every semester the club chooses a project; and. in the past, the)- have bought bedspreads for the boys' hospital room in Mr. Bancroft's office. This club was formed to develop personalities, to foster friendships, and to add to the cultural life of its members. Membership is limited to speech students interested in drama. Activities of the club include plays, radio performance, programs, and stunts. Home Economics Cluh Enjoyment is found by some of the girls in this club by relating what they have learned in Home Ec class and putting it to use in their club. We not only beat Banks by a score of 32 to 6 but also got the bid for the Clinic game. The rain came down and so did the Colonels but we had the best spirit in spite of that. We had one of the best football teams we have had in a long time. Three of our boys made All-City. They were Harold Morgan, Ray Bethea, and Tom Loveless. Harold Morgan also made All-State. The best defensive back was given by Charles “Binky” Hazelhurst. Our coaches, John Howell, John Armstrong, and Jim Pyburn, gave excellent influence and leadership which really showed itself in the way our boys played.
