WOODLOG 1961 WOODLA WN HIGH SCHOOL Birmingham, Alabama Volume XXXV Foreword 1961 Another year has come and gone. The editors hope that the 1961 WOODl.OG will be your record of this year's most important activities, from the confusion of opening days and the first football game through Spring Commencement. To the Senior, max it represent the final act of a high school drama; to the freshman, the beginning of a long exciting play. But most important, may it he the link to help you relive in future limes, vivid moments of this wonderful year. 3 'Hie Colonel is more than n mere symbol or mascot: lie is something that is alive in the hearts of all students and teachers, both past and present. He is the magic force that creates a strong loyalty for WHS. urges us to do the best we can at all times, and helps us measure up to tin fine traditions of Woodlawn. 4 to the Spirit of the Colonel Many picture him as a tall man with silvery hair and beard, wearing a gold suit and top liat typical of the 1850’s. Others think he is just small enough to get into the swing of things. Whichever he is. we arc pleased that he represents us: for we know that his spirit will always help guide ns wherever we may go. 5 Mr. Ralph Martin ... Al the Barbecue Pit Mr. Martin’s high ideals inspire n to aim for greater goals. Hia guidance and understanding are often im| ortant factors in building the character of his students. Mr. Martin is not tin kind of man who sits behind a desk all day gi ing orders. He i often seen walking down the hull, stopping now and then for a friendly chat with a student or a teacher. If there is serious illness or death in the family of one of the students. Mr. Martin finds time to stop hv for a visit and to offer his help. With Mr. Martin’s principles as an inspiration and his words as a guide, wc can better reach the goals he has taught us to aim for. .. . Ai the Piano r . . . On die Lawn Principal 1961 These pictures show Mr. Marlin on Saturday afternoon relaxing at hi- home, which he designed. The Isarbecue pit is n part of the large patio he built, and the often admired lawn is also one of his pet projects. The lady with him is Mrs. Martin, who naturally is a great part of his life. They share many hours together at the piano, in the kitchen, and just relaxing. She listens to Mr. Martin’s school problems and sometimes gives advice. Her suggestions are well thought out and are given serious consideration. I h u s, Mrs. Martin help Mr. Martin continue to keep Woodlawn the good school it is. . .. Although Woodlawn’s Colonels did nut get the hid for the Crippled Children's Clinic game, they made a fine record with five wins, one tie, and three losses. This won-lost record does not tell an accurate story of the Colonel’s success. The loss to Phillips, the Colonel’s arch-rival, was the first loss after two wins over Etowah County and Central of Phoenix. The Colonels would surely have won if they had not dug their own grave by missing all their extra points. Banks turned on the pressure against Woodlawn with a 0-0 victory. In the final quarter. End Harold Morgan outran the Jets with a 70-yard gallop for a touchdown, but the play was called buck. The Colonels played every man on the bench and still rolled up a score of H-7. In the sixth game when it looked as if the Ensley players were sure of their berth in the Clinic game. Womllawn came along anti knocked them off their lofty pedestal. So it was. that near the end of the season, the Colonels jammed the Big Six race. This year. Woodlawn had four boys to make all-city. They were: Robin Abbott, Wallace Allison, Jimmy Robbins. and Bill Sanders. We are proud of the team’s record and we hope that Woodlawn will continue to keep up the good work in the future. West Tough opposition Jailed to A disappointing defeat by Bessemer initiated the 1960-61 basketball season. After a heated third quarter, with the score til'd, Bessemer swept back for a ten-point win. After they won the next two games with Ramsay and Glenn, it seemed as if the Colonels had developed a steadfast pace. In both games we led, through all four quarters; hut. West End and Tuscaloosa soon disproved our conclusion. In the Ensley game we were behind only once by one |M int in the second quarter. Banks kept a lead of at least two points through all four quarters. With Jones Valley, Wood I awn chalked up 110 points, the greatest score in any one game. Although the Jefferson County Classic proved too much for the Colonels, they won the games with Ramsay, Bessemer, and West End. but lost to Tuscaloosa.
