JIM PY-BURN. Assistant Coach. FOOTBALL In the first year under Coach Johnny Howell, Woolawn's former city champs finished with a disappointing 3-5 record. The Colonels, however, truly had a better team than their final record showed, as they were hampered by late season injuries and were just edged in three big games by scores of 12-8, 7-3. and 20-1-1. Woodlawn had a three and one record in the city, losing only to the Ramsay Rams in a heartbreaking 20-Id loss. This record enabled them to gain a berth in the Crippled Children's Clinic on Thanksgiving, for the 3th time in a row. Again the Rams proved to be too much as they won 7-0. As in previous years, they lost all three games played outside the city. Despite this mediocre season, the Colonels placed three linemen on the first team AH-Gty and had one to make All-State. These were Ralph Boyer, All-City. All-State; George Shepherd. All-City; and Sonny Boggs. All-City, All-State. Douglas Wheeler, senior quarterback, and the sensational Junior halfback. Robin Abbott, were selected to the All-City second team. One of the key things in the Colonel attack proved to be the massive line which took up the slack left by the lack of backficld speed. Other prominent figures in the Colonel attack were Jimmy Horton. James Martin, Arthur Whatley and Hal Parks. The early pan of the season somewhat resembled that of last year, as Woodlawn defeated nearly everyone they played by a margin of 10, including such powerhouses as Tuscaloosa. Ensley, Minor, and the newly formed Banks High School. Not stopping here, the Colonels continued to roll on by defeating Bessemer and West End as the season drew to an end. In maintaining this superb 12-1 record, Coach John Blanc started our seniors: Johnny Eadcs, Gerald Todd, Dennis Lathem, and George Nichols along with lone junior. Bill Gray. The Colonel attack was well balanced anti usually saw at least four of the five above in double figures along with fine rebounding. Thus, with a high shooting percentage and good height, the Colonels arc proving all along to be one of the big contenders for the state championship, if they can get through the tough District Five playoffs at Glenn High. Among other things, she was President of the Board of Directors of the Woodlawn High School Savings Bank. Associate Editor and Editor-at-Large of the Tatlcr, a member of National Honor Society, and a member of the Latin and the French clubs. In August, 19M). she moved with her family to Winter Haven, Florida. Although she is happy there, it is natural that a part of her heart is here at Woodlawn High School.
