BASKETBALL 195 9 With a pre-Classic record of 11 wins in 13 starts, the Woodlawn Colonels were chosen to compete in the annual Jefferson County Classic for the 5th consecutive year. In the semi-finals they won 67-45 over the Ramsey Blues. In the finals Corner won over Woodlawn 53-40. Even in the first game of this season Woodlawn showed promise by capitalizing on a four-play attack to beat the Howard College Freshmen, 71-50. Leon Dunaway, first team All-City as a junior last winter, joined in the attack with three other holdover regulars, Larry Daniels, Jerry Yelverton, and Gerald Todd. Woodlawn carried on in true tradition by winning its next three over Jones Valley, Bessemer and Ensley. In a 5fh straight victory, center Dunaway pumped in 26 points in a victory of 85-51 over Hueytown. Woodlawn, barreling into the 80-point sector for the second night in a row, stepped out in front as the county's top scoring team by belting the Phillip's Crimsons 85-43 in its 6-0 record. A 57-46 win over the Tuscaloosa Black Bears came against a foe regarded as perhaps the toughest team Woodlawn would face before tournament time. Everyone of the seven Colonels who played got at least two goals. Dunaway and Yelverton had six goals apiece at the finish. Combining aggressive defense with a well-balanced, on-target shooting, Woodlawn laced the Ramsey Blues 55-37 and registered an 8th straight basketball decision of 44-23. The subs took over in the final period for both sides and Ramsey had a 14-11 margin but still was far behind at the finish. In a 63-34 victory over the Bessemer Purple Tigers, the Colonels won their 9th straight victory. The Colonels outgoaled their rivals 27 to 9 with center Dunaway looping in eight goals as the pacer. Larry Danials, Anthony Cherry, Jerry Yelverton, and Gerald Todd backed Dunaway solidly. Woodlawn, undefeated in 10 games, trailed West End until the last four minutes before winning, 45-39. In their 12th, 13th, and 14th games the Colonels scored a win over Jones Valley, followed by two successive defeats by Tarrant and Ensley. We go to press before the last games are played with Tarrant, Ramsay, Tuscoloosa, West End. 121
