On the second team were Harvey Hassell and Ronald Ryan. Honorable Mention went to Scott Thomas, Bo Powers, Bobby Dorr, and' Gary Smith. Even though the boys did not turn out too well in playing, one thing they have learned-how to behave. Coach Morgan re- ceived a letter from Frank C. Drane complimenting the team's good behavior. Part of Mr. Drane's letter follows. Your entire organization was most cooperative. You have a fine bunch of boys who certainly know how to conduct themselves, and l know you are proud of them. WOODLAWN 14-MU RPHY 18 The Colonels played very hard the first three quarters, but iust couldn't cross the Murphy goal line. The teams made many fumbles during the game on account of the rain-soaked field. Both of Woodlawn's touchdowns went to James Hendry, full- back. The touchdown passes were set by Rosie Ryan. Tommy Ray kicked Woodlawn's extra point after their first touch- down. Bob Shelton and Bob Cowles, for Murphy, and James Hendry, Tommy Ray, and Rosie Ryan, for Woodlawn, were leading men. WOODLAWN 6-RAMSAY 26 A crowd of 10,000 watched Ramsay's ground attack ruin Woodlawn's win. A 210-pound buster, George Salem, and Jimmy Travis, Ramsay's fine quarterbacks, were Woodlawn's trouble. Ramsay made their first touchdown in the first five minutes of the game, but the Colonels quickly tied the score. Neither side kicked the extra point. Ramsay made one more touchdown in the first quarter and kicked the extra point. With two more touchdowns and one more extra point, the Rams walked off with a 26-6 victory. Woodlawn's stars were James Reece, Jimmy Dahlke, and Rosie Ryan. WOODLAWN 6-TUSCALOOSA 20 'The Colonels fought hard but were overcome by the Tusca- loosa Black Bears-in score only. No team could have fought so hard with so little to gain. Woodlawn received the open- ing kick-off. Marching toward the goals several times in the first half, the Colonels were set back by the Bears. By the time the half was over, the Bears had made three touchdowns and had twice kicked the extra point, In the second half the Colonels made a gallant comeback with all they could. Has- sell, catching the punt on the 28-yard lin'e and aided by excellent blocking, ran 72 yards to the goal to make Wood- lawn's only touchdown. The Colonels failed to kick the extra point. Several times more the Colonels threatened to score but were stopped by the Bears. Harvey Hassell was the game's Sflr. WOODLAWN 13-WEST END 7 Woodlawn stunned the Lions with a red hot team. West End's Keith Wilson, the Lions' war horse, iust couldn't get down to work. Aided by penalties, the Lions finally managed to slip in and get a touchdown, making the extra point. The score stood 13-7, and ended that way, The Colonels scored 7 points in the second quarter and 6 more in the third. The Lions did all their scoring in the last quarter. Ryan, Hurt, Hassell, Hendry and Shellnut were the shining stars for Woodlawn. WOODLAWN 7-BESSEMER 13 The Colonels lost another battle by losing to Bessemer 13-7. Woodlawn fought hard and were leading until the last four minutes of the game, Both teams had a great defensive line and used them to keep the game at a 0-0 tie for the first half. During the last half both teams opened up and played a great game. James Reece made a beautiful catch, which gave the Colonels their only touchdown. Reece's catch will long be remembered by thousands of fans. James Reece was outstanding for Woodlawn, and Tommy Lorino, the Colonels' fine star last year, was Bessemer's outstanding man. lb., , -.- . .-. WOODLAWN 14-ENSLEY 7 In this game Woodlawn proved to hunting a bid in the Crippled Childrens' Clinic Game, and our school spirit was brought back. The Jackets made their only touchdown in the first quarter, but from then on they couldn't pierce our line for another one. They got down to our 5-yard line in the last half, but that was all. Ensley made her touchdown when LaRussa blocked one of Ryan's kicks, getting the ball and scoring the TD. McGaughy scored the extra point for Ensley. Woodlawn took advantage of two costly fumbles made by the Jackets and turned them into touchdowns. Barr kicked two beauties for both extra points. Ryan and Glass powered through the second and fourth quarters for two touchdowns. Ryan got off one of the best kicks of the night, kicking a mighty 50-yard boot to Sammy Lorino, who ran it back some twelve yards to the Ensley 28-yard line. Dahlke was indi- rectly the cause of one of the TD's when he recovered an Ensley fumble on their 2-yard line, the boring power did the rest. The outstanding players for Ensley were LaRussa, Warren, Campbell, and McBee, for Woodlawn, Dahlke, Faulkner, Smith, Patrick, Ryan, Powers, and Thomas. WOODLAWN 19-SHADES VALLEY 7 The Colonels spoiled the Mounties' Homecoming game while a crowd of five thousand fans watched. The first touchdown was made in the first five minutes of the game, when Powers dropped on a Mountie fumble on their 55-yard line, and in iust one run, Hassell took the ball over for a touchdown. Barr converted for the extra point. ln the third quarter the Mounties worked their way down to the Colonels' 7-yard line. Then with a mighty drive, Valley took the ball over for their only TD. The conversion tied it at 7-7. The Colonels received the next kick-off and went for another TD. Barr failed to convert and the score stood at 13-7. Dahlke intercepted a pass on the 36-yard line, and after three downs the Colonels were set for the kill. A pass from Ryan to Reece made the score 19-7. Barr failed to make the extra point, but time had already run Out for the Mounties. Woodlawn's stars were Hassell, Glass and Hendry. Valley's were Sington, Chew, Fortenberry, and Godbee. WOODLAWN 26-COLUMBUS 0 The Colonels slashed the Columbus Blue Devils in Columbus by a score of 26-O. Glass played great ball by gaining 133 yards in ten carries. He completed six passes for an addi- tional 89 yards. On one play he made a run of 68 yards. Woodlawn made two touchdowns in the second quarter and two in the fourth. The Devils made only eighteen yards on the ground, and out of eighteen passing attempts they lost three yards. The Colonels put on drives of 59 and 92 yards in the fourth. King scored twice, Hassell once, Ryan threw to Reece for another TD. Barr converted after the two first- half scores. Raymond King, Harvey Hassell, Rosie Ryan, James Reece, and Bobby Barr were the Woodlawn stars. WOODLAWN 27-PHILLIPS 6 Our boys exploded all over the Red Raiders by beating them 27-6. Phillips' only TD was made by Oliver Clark, who look afllfaflllge of Woodlawn's fumbles and ran 48 yards to score. The extra point failed. Woodlawn had a great line of defense and an even greater offense. Glass played fine ball. He got two second-half touchdowns. Ryan got the other. King threw a pass to Smith for our first touchdown. Woodlawn moved the ball for gains of 45, 45, 21, and 31 yards for our TD's. Barr kicked three of our four trys at extra points. Ryan, Smith, and King stood out for Woodlawn, Tuck and Clark, for Phillips. THE ACROBATS Carolyn Cook, Marilon McCay, Jo Ann Davis, Billie Jean Pearson, Jackie Rich. Ordway entered as Head of the English Department, she was graduated with honors this past semester. ln those early days of the school, besides her duties as Head of the Department and classroom teacher, she was session room teacher of Room 26, now Room 202, which was at that time two rooms. In the tremendous under- taking of getting the new school orga- nized and off to a good start, Miss Ord- way was among those who formu- lated policies and set standards that have b e c o m e traditional and that have helped make Woodlawn H ig h School the fine school it is today. Among the organizations and activities she ini- tiated are the National Honor Society, the literary clubs, and the Boosters Club, from which our present student govern- ment evolved. She also started the Tatler MlSS ORDWAY ...A , 4 .il J , Winner of Scholarship to George Peabody College through works submitted to the National Scho- lastic Awards. GEORGE SEWELL Oratorical Contest. GEORGE ADCOCK Oratorical Contest. ARLENE GRAY Winner of Scholarship to Bir- mingham Southerng Senior Class Valedictorian. JOANN HODGE Senior Class Valedictorian and the Woodlog, both publications go- ing by the name of The Tatler for the first few years. The first yearbook was dedicated to her. Miss Ordway was also chairman of the auditorium and gradu- ation committees, and from the first she insisted on the high quality of programs which has been maintained throughout the years. Teaching, however, was Miss Ordway's chief interest. Genuinely inter- ested in her pupils and their welfare, she sought to build character and instill ideals as well as train minds. Woodlawn High School is deeply indebted to Miss Ordway for her many valuable contri- butions to the growth and development of the school and the enrichment of its program. We shall miss her now that she is retiring from the profession to which she has devoted so much of her life and in which she has been so successful. Wherever she is our very best wishes for her happiness go with her.
