WRITE - UPS By Joyce Wallace WOODIAWN 21-WEST END 12 WOODLAWN 6—PHILLIPS 6 Woodlawn's first game, predicted to be a win, turned out to be a heartbreaking tie. Woodlawn took the lead early In the first quarter with hard-running Fullback John Pichelmayer leading the way. Halfback Carl Jones failed to convert. Phillips T.D. came in the last play of the game. Other outstanding Woodlawn players were Backs Larry Woods and Robert Hobbs, and defensive Beck Dick Baker. On the line Country Jordan, Ahmed Holcomb, and Red Bellenger played heads-up football Co-Captains for the game were Don Powell and Pichelmayer. WOODLAWN 47-SANSOM 0 The Woodlawn Colonels showed everyone how to play football as they romped over Emma Sansom High School 47—0. The Colonels' first T.D. came with Fullback Pichelmayer plunging over the 5-yard line. Halfback Hobbs scored next, ending a 46-yard march. After a Sansom fumble in the second quarter. Halfback Jones carried the pigskin over for the third six-polntor. Hobbs scored again in the second period on a 16-yard run. Back Theo Hale scored early in the second half after a fumble recovery at the 21. A 62-yard pass from Quarterback Wood to End Wolaver added the sixth, and Back Tommy Ray went over from the 6 to finish the scoring. Halfback Jones converted five of seven extra points. It would be hard to pick a stand-out lineman. Tackle Don Powell played his usual jam-up game, as did Guards Clarence Vaughn and Norman White. Country Jordan was also in on some nice tackles. Co-Captains for the game were Ahmed Holcomb and Carl Jones. WOODLAWN 32—ENSLEY 0 The Woodlawn Colonels, led by Pichelmayer, Hobbs, Jones, and Wood, romped over the Enstey Yellow Jackets 32—0. Quarterback Wood scored the first T.D. on a one-yard Quarterback sneak. Right Halfback Hobbs scored early in the second quarter on a 25-yard run over left tackle. Fullback Pichelmayer scored next on a 2-yard buck through the line. The Colonels did not score again until the fourth quarter when left Halfback Jones scored around right end. left Halfback langham intercepted an Ensley pass and ran 42 yards for the last 6 pointer. Tackles Powell and Jordan, Center James Dahlke end Ends Wolaver end Thorn were among the stars on the line. Co-Captains for the game were Larry Wood and Norman White. WOODLAWN 19—TUSCALOOSA 6 The Woodlawn Colonels finally cut loose in the second half to roll by Tuscaloosa 19—6. Tuscaloosa took the lead in the first quarter and left at the half time leading 6—0. Woodlawn'e first touchdown came in the middle of the third quarter when Fullback Pichelmayor went over from the 5-yard line. Jonos converted to make the score 7—6. With seven minutes lefl In the ball game Quartorback Wood scored on a Quarterback sneak over Guard. Jonos failod to convert. After a Tuscaloosa fumble, End Murphy recovered to set up Woodlawn's final touchdown. Fullback Pichelmayer carried It over from the 13. Standouts on the line were Centers Bellenger ond Dahlke, linebacker Ray, Guard Holcomb, Tackles Powell and Jordan, and End Grubbs. Co-Captains were Charles Bellenger and George Grubbs. WOODLAWN 6—BESSEMER 19 Woodlawn, getting a slow start, fell before Bessemer High School for their first defeot of the season by a score of 19—6. Woodlawn's only touchdown came In the last half with Fullback Pichelmayer taking it over from the 5-yard line. Halfback Jones failed to convert for the extra point. Top ground gainers for the Colonels were Halfbacks Jones and Hobbs and Fullback Pichelmayer In that order. On tho line Tackle Don Powell was the big gun, along with help from End Murphy. Guard Clarence Vaughn, Linebacker James Reese. Guard Holcomb, and Tackle Jordan. Co-Captains were Charles Anderson and David Jordan. The Colonels, practically dincing a Clinic Game berth, turned back the West End Lions 21—13. Center Charles Bellenger got things started in the first quarter when he grabbed a West End fumble and scampered 47 yards, without a hand being laid on him, for the initial 6 points. Halfback Jones converted for the extra point. The second T.D. came on a line plunge from the 6-yard line by Fullback Pichelmayer. Jones converted again. The Colonels' final touchdown came in the last quarter when Quarterback Charles Anderson flipped a 24-yard pass to End Wolaver on the goal line. Jones converted for the final point. Woodlawn's whole team played jam-up ball. Linemen making a fine showing were Ends Thom and Wolaver, Tackles Jordan and Powell, Guards Holcomb and Williams, and Center Dahlke. Co-Captains were Robert Hobbs and Charles Bellonger. WOODLAWN 27—ANNISTON 26 Playing hard, and with a will to win, Woodlawn Colonels edged by Anniston High with a score of 27—26. Woodlawn went Into the second quarter trailing 13—0. Halfback Tommy lorino took off on a 50-yard run to the 4, where Fullback Hale took the ball over for the initial T.D. Hale made the second T.O. on a seven-yard plunge. Halfback Jones converted for the extra point, to make the scoreboard read at the half, 20—13. lorino started the Colonels rolling again in the third period on an 8-yard end run for the third T.D. Woods converted for the extra point, lorino and Hale carried the ball to the I-foot line, where Quarterback Woods went over. Wood converted for the extra point to give Woodlawn 27—26 victory. Woodlawn threatened again when Quarterback Charles Anderson threw a 50-yard pass to End Billy Wolaver, who was tackled on the 9-yard line. Standouts on the Colonel line were Tackles Powell and Jordan, Center Reese, Guard Vaughn, and Ends Wolaver and Thom. Co-Captains for the game were Clarence Vaughn and Ed Thom. WOODLAWN 32-SHADES VALLEY 0 Despite rain and snow the Colonels raked up a 32—0 victory over Shades Valley. Woodlawn, failing to score in the first quarter, tallied two T.D.'s and one extra point In the second to make the halftime score 13—0. The initial touchdown came on a pass from Quarterback Anderson to End Wolaver in the end xone. Woods failed to convert. The second tally came on a pass from Anderson to End Thorn. Wood converted for the extra point. In the third quarter Halfback Lorino got away for the next 6 pointer. The try for the extra point was good. In the fourth quarter the Colonels also scored two T.D.'s, Fullback Hale Making the first one over Tackle. The final tally was made on a pass from Quarterback Garrard to End Goss. Also playing good games were Halfbacks Thompson and Hobbs. Tackles Powell and Jordan, and Ends Wolaver and Thom. WOODLAWN 0—RAMSAY 24 The Colonels played a good game on the ground, in the air. and on the line, but the odds were against them. Wood-lawn had three fumbles which were costly and penalties that came at the wrong time. Top ground gainers for the Colonels were Baker, lorino, and Woods, in that order. The Colonel line played an outstanding game with End Wolaver, Halfback Jones, and Lineman Dahlke making fine blocks. Co-Captains for the game were Don Powell and Charles Bellengor. The Clinic Game WOODLAWN 6—RAMSAY 28 The Woodlawn Colonels had a fine '51 season. With seven wins and two defeots, they were chosen for the honor of playing In the annual Cripplod Children's Clinic Game on Thanksgiving Day. The boys played a good game but just could not make the touchdowns Woodlawn scored once in the second quarter on a pass from Quarterbeck Woods to End Thorn.
