BESSEMER 0 FOOTBALL The Colonels started the season with a slow start, grinding toward a blazing finish until injuries to key players stopped them midway. Although this was not a winning season it was one of the most thrilling. Captain Murray Wood and Co-Captain Jimmy Fullington, backed by a hard plunging line, swift backs, and brainy quarterbacks, gave able guidance. It can be said that the 1949 team carried the Colonel colors according to the best traditions of Woodlawn High School. RAMSAY 13. WOODLAWN 7 The Rams pinned a heartbreaking defeat on the never-say-quit Colonels. Sorrell scored a first period touchdown and Jones kicked the extra point. Ramsay scored in the second period but miss the extra point, leaving the Colonels ahead. Early in the fourth quarter Baumgartner spoiled the nfhole game with a touchdown and Pharo with an extra point. The Colonels made one last try that nearly turned the tide but the crucial pass was too high. TUSCALOOSA CITY HIGH 13. WOODLAWN 0 The Colonels played a rugged, spirited game but they were just no match for the Black Bears. The game featured some beautiful plays but too many of them were made by Tuscaloosa. The game as a whole was marred by frequent WOODLAWN 13. ENSLEY 6 The Colonel fire was roaring with the first win of the season and undoubtedly the most thrilling game. Stebcr received the opening kick-off, returning it seven yards. Sorrell, Walker. Fullington, and Armstrong then carried the ball to the Jacket 13, where Sorrell took over for the touchdown. The extra point was missed. The Jackets tied up the game in the third quarter on a blocked punt. Three plays later Sorrell made his 62-yard dash for the winning touchdown, and Jones kicked the extra point. The fourrh quarter featured one of the best goal line stands in many years. The Jackets had a first down on the Colonel one-yard line. First down and Bethea brought the carrier down with no gain. Second down and Steele did the same. On the third down F.thridgc threw him for a seven-yard loss, and on fourth Byrd did likewise, thus saving the game. The Colonel machine was grinding in high gear for the stretch drive as the Woudlawn backs, led by Sorrell, Fulling-ton, and Stebcr. ripped the Tigersâ forward wall for 216 yards, culminating in a lone touchdown by Armstrong and the extra point by Jones. The Tigers lost several scoring opportunities on fumbles and intercepted passes. SIDNEY LANIER 2ÂŤ. WOODLAWN 7 With three of their key backs, Walker, Fullington. and Sorrell, out the Colonels never had a chance. Lanier scored four times before Anderson finally rammed the only Wood-lawn touchdown across, followed by the extra point skillfully made by Jones. The whole game was characterized by too many Poets in the right place at the right time. PHILLIPS 13, WOODLAWN 0 Injuries began to take their toll as the slightly favored Colonels lust their homecoming game. The offense could not be found and the defense could not last the whole game. This loss definitely put the Colonels out of the Clinic game. ANNISTON 14. WOODLAWN 0 Anniston, believing that the early bird gets the worm, hauled the ball 92 yards to paydirt before the opening whistle had died away. Woodlawn's only threat came late in the first quarter but ended in a fumble on the 13-yard line. Particularly outstanding in this game were Captain Wood and Steele in the Colonel forward wall. WEST END 14. WOODLAWN 7 The Colonels kicked off and then recovered a Lion fumble. Immediately they started their touchdown drive with Fullington finally going over. Jones made his fifth successful conversion. West End tied up the game in the second quarter and then cashed in on a fumble in the third quarter, making the winning touchdosvn. The Colonels put on another brilliant goal line stand for which they had become famous. This was an exceptionally well played game with many standouts. The most notable were Fullington and Sorrell in the back field, and Byrd, Steele. Wood, and Gillespie in the forward line.
