CHEERLEADERS BO JONES AND MASCOT FOOTBALL 1948 BY HAROLD BETHEA The Colonel grid machine started slow but gamed speed as the team gained experience. When the season closed, the Colonels had a fair record. They won five games, lost three, and tied one. After winning three out of four Big Five games, the Colonel were chosen to play in the Crippled Children's Clinic game. The '4 squad was not a championship team but they played the kind of ball Woodlawn is famous for. The Colonels placed men on the various All City teams. They were Captain Freddie Mims, Mart Vasserburg. and Harold Bethea. Vasserburg also placed on the All State teams. Mints was awarded the Monday Morning Quarterback Club Trophy, given each year to the outstanding back in the city. Woodlawn had other outstanding players in James Wallace. Benny Clayton, Joe Abts, David Booker, and Alt. Capt. Bobby Bowden. There were many thrills and a few disappointments in the '4R season, but the Colonels became known for their do-or-die spirit. This spirit won many games in which the Colonels were underdogs. RAMSAY IJ. WOODLAWN 6 Woodlawn lost a close game on September I . Ramsay drew first blood as Morrow ran for a Ram touchdown, but the Colonels bounced back with a long drive which ended with Bobby Bowden's fifteen-yard run for a touchdown. The Ratnt came back and scored on a long pasi. putting them ahead at the half, I 1-6. The Colonels played good ball the second half but could not muster up a touchdown. The line played fine ball, led by Spud Wallace, Mort Vasserburg. and Joe Abts. In the backficld Bowden and Cjptain Mims led the attack. TUSCALOOSA CITY HIGH 18. WOODLAWN 7 The Colonels lost another game to the Tuscaloma Black Bears. It was too much Cel Hobson and too little spirit from the Colonels. Hobson scored one on a return kick. The Clonels scored when G. B. Holmes broke away for • 17-yard run in the fourth. Holmes was the outstanding player on the Woodlawn team. ISTROUMA 0. WOODLAWN 0 The mighty Istrouma High School Indians woke up in Birmingham on October 2 thinking they had an easy game. But they found the Colonels hard to take. They hacked at Coach Smith's line all night but couldn't get through it. The Colonels alto found it difficult to budge the Indians' line. Woodlawn managed to get to the ten-vard line in the fourth. The drive bogged down there. The Indian reached the Colonels’ 16, but couldn’t go farther. The game ended in a draw but proved the Colonels were an up and coming eleven. WOODLAWN 12. F.NSLEY 6 The Colonels had to win this game and they won it in fine fashion. The favored Jackets were outclassed. Capt. Mims raced JO yard on an intercepted past for the first Wood-lawn touchdown. Don Byrd caught a Booker past for the other Colonel tally. F.nsley scored in the fourth quarter hut did not threaten any more. Woodlawn was on the march. WOODLAWN 14, BESSEMER 6 Woodlawn came from behind to beat Bessemer. Blackerby scored for Bessemer after being held three downs. Wood-lawn came back strong and evened the count. G. B. Holmes ran sixty yards for a touchdown. Ronnie Nash converted to put the Colonel ahead, 7-6. Woodlawn scored again in the last quarter on an end around. Spud Wallace ran 18 yards for the score. The Colonels played excellent ball after they got started in the second period. WOODLAWN 12. PHILLIPS 0 The Colonels pros'ed themselves one of the better teams in the Big Five when they defeated Phillip . The Colonel came back after a scoreless first half and scored two touchdowns on passe . Jimmy Fullington threw both passes, one to Spud Wallace and another to Freddie Mims. When Fullington wasn't passing. David Booker and G. B. Holmes were running. The Woodlawn line blocked and tackled in true Colonel fashion. WOODLAWN 2. SIDNEY LANIER 0 The Colonels journeyed down to Montgomery to play a football game but it turned out to be a mud battle. It rained all during the game, but the rain did not stop the Colonels. They drove to the Lanier goal line time and time again, to be stopped by the opposing team. The game remained scoreless until the fourth quarter when Thomas Poc tackled a I amer kicker behind the goal for a safety. Don Byrd set this up by blocking a Lamer kick a few play earlier. The Colonel beat the mud and a tough Lanier team. WOODLAWN 11. WEST END 12 Woodlawn came back after trailing at the half time to win a ball game and a bid to the Clinic Game. West End scored first on a long run in the second quarter. They held the Colonels eff until the half. After the half the Colonels had a renewed spirit. They ran. blocked, and tackled like demons. David Booker scored after leading a long drive to bring the Colonels ahead. 7-6. G. B. Holmes scored the second Woodlawn touchdown on a short buck. The Lions roared back, scoring another touchdown, but Ronald Nash's extra point kept the Colonels ahead, 1J-I2. In the final minutes of the game Spud Wallace tackled a Lion passer behind the goal for a safety, putting the game on ice. ETOWAH 12. WOODLAWN 6 Woodlawn left their luck in Birmingham when they went to play the Etowah Blue Devils. Etowah scored twice in the first half, once on a blocked kick and again on a muffed kick-off. The Colonels scored in the fiuirth after a long drive but couldn't score again, even though they threatened twice afterwards. G. B. Holmes ran hard and fast all night, scoring the only Colonel tally. He carried the ball in all but two plays in the fourth quarter. This game broke the Colonels' winning streak of five games. THE CRIPPLED CHILDREN'S CLINIC GAME RAMSAY JJ. WOODLAWN IV Woodlawn played its second Clinic game in two year The Colonels found the Ram a tough aggregation. Ramsay scored two touchdowns in the first quarter and led at the half, 21-6. Woodlawn. however, was not pushed over by the Ram . The Colonels played fine ball the second half, offering many thrills to the 27-odd thousand people in the stands. Freddie Mims caught a pass from Jim Fullington and raced the length of the field for a touchdown, led by good downfu-ld blockers. G. B. Holmes scored on a kick-off. running eighty yards. He was touchdown bound until a Ramsay tackier pulled him down from behind. The fine defensive playing of Mort Vasserburg. Benny Clayton, and Joe Abts was a credit to Woodlawn. Capt. Freddie Mims played good ball for the Colonels. This game ended the season for Woodlawn. THE BASKETBALL TEAM First row: Ben Farrar. Mgr.; James Hines. Albert Morton. Johnny Freeman. Gordon Sorrell. Ernest Abernathy. Second row: Joe Coon. Jack Steadman. Hugh Jones, Jimmy Fullingun, John Tate, George Adkint. Coach Blanc. BASKETBALL BY JAMES HINES With five lettermen—Joe Coon. Jimmy Fullington. Albert Morton. James Hines, and Johnny Freeman—returning, the outlook for the 4t-'49 campaign was fair. Experience was in the team's favor, but they were lacking in height. The 47-'4l team was a surprise to everybody. After finishing a bad third in the Big Five city race, they turned on the steam to come out second in the Fifth District tournament. Led by Captain Copeland, they conquered Ensley, West End, and Mortimer Jordan, finally losing to Tuscaloosa County, led by six-foot-seven Center Paul Sullivan, 52 to 22. Copeland was named on the All-District team. At this writing the ’4 -‘49 Colonels have won seven games and lost three, winning over Ramsey twice, West End, Bessemer. Tuscaloosa City High, and Blount County, and handing Phillips their only loss so far this season. The Colonels have lost to Phillips, West End. and Ensley. BASEBALL SQUAD Fir c row: Johnny Freeman. It had a number of bright pot —in fine bateman Gene Burnett, who hit a fat .M2 for the season; in Honey Cuiclifte, who also had a big season, hitting .46f; and in catcher Gene Powell, who had the beat season of his high tchool career. The outlook for the 49 team is not too bright, with only three lettermen returning—James Hines. Johnny Freeman, and Red Walker. However, there are bright prospects in Murray Wood, Ben Farrar, Spud Wallace, Bill Brown, Jack Hatchet and Howard Alexander to help the veterans put up a fight for the County Championship.
