For one thing, Woodlawn High School put seven players on the first string All-City. They were as follows: Ends: Charles Justo, All-State, Tommy Edwards, All-State Tackle: Robert Nunn Center: H. 0. McElvana Quarterback: Earl Langner, All-State Halfbacks: David Booker, Honey Cutcliffe By defeating West End, Woodlawn was given a bid to the Crippled Children's Game. The Colonels were capably led by Captain Earl Langner and Alternate Captain Tommy Edwards. WOODLAWN 13-RAMSAY 6 The Woodlawn Colonels clashed with the Ramsay Rams and came out on top. David Booker ran over the goal l-ine for the first Colonel touchdown of the year. Mims crashed over for the second, and Tommy Edwards converted for the extra point. ISTROUMA 20-WOODLAWN 0 The mighty Colonels of Woodlawn High School journeyed down to Baton Rouge to try out Ivstrouma High. Well, to make a long story short, Istrouma beat Woodlawn 20-0. Captain Langner played an outstanding defensive game. v WOODLAWN 12--ENSLEY 0 Great teaming by ends Charles Justo and Tommy Edwards, with backer-ups H. O. McElvana and Captain Earl Langner, stopped Ensley's attack to one mild threat, which reached the Colonel's 19 midway tin the last quarter. Booker made the first touchdown with one minute remaining in the first period. The second touchdown was made by a pass from Booker to Holmes. LeVelIe Smith's conversion, went wide. WOODLAWN 7-BESSEMER 6 This game was about the most exciting game the Colonels played this year. The Colonels were trailing 6-0 with two minutes left in the final qu-arter when. Booker completed four straight passes for a Colonel touchdown to turn what appeared certain.defe'at into victory as Earl Langner converted the all-important extra point. The Tigers tried passes in the last minute, in a vain effort to score again. The game ended as Cutchtfe intercepted the fourth Bessemer pass. WOODLAWN 25-GULF COAST MILITARY ACADEMY 0 The Colonels scored three times in the four times they had possession of the ball in the first half of this game. Honey Cutcliffe made the first touchdown. G. B. Holmes scored on the first play of the second period. Sub-tailbaok Billy Gilmer sparked two other drives, passing to right-end Tommy Edwards for the third score of the first half, and to Charles Justo for the last touchdown of the game. PHILLIPS 3-WOODLAWN 0 The educated toe of Billy Tucker spelled disaster for the Colonels. He kicked a field goal through the uprights making the score Phillips 3-Woodlawn 0. The rest of the game was a see-saw event. Buddy McCann and Robert Nunn both turned in an excellent defensive game. SIDNEY LANIER 20-WOODLAWN 7 The Sidney Lanier Poets played heads-up football the night of November'8. In the last quarter Captain Earl Langner cau.ght a pass over the goal. Langner also attempted the extra point and converted. WOODLAWN 12-WEST END 0 The first Colonel touchdown of the game oame when David Booker swung from the six-yard line, over right tackle and into pay-dirt. Langner's conversion was wide. West End fumbled on her own four, and Charles Justo gathered it in. Pappas hit right tackle twice plowing across on the second try to make the score 12-0. Booker attempted an 05 tackle for the extra point but failed. ' RAMSAY 25-WOODLAWN 0 On Thanksgiving Day Woodlawn High School and Ramsay clashed, with Ramsay coming out on top. Early in the game Woodlawn suffered a valuable loss when Captain Earl Langner's arm was hurt, thus putting this much needed baclker-up on the side-line for the rest of the game. Ramsay's John Baumgartner punted 103 yards for the most beautiful kick of the day or the season. Tackle Robert Nunn turned in the best defensive game of the day. .4 . ,gin 1 .52-wr, f 'ss i Map' . fm :Qi-Q I1 , his If 25 Q M554 yr BA KETBALL u ws..,,,, , CAPTAIN GENE COPELAND, Gum-fl JAMES GUSTIN Center JOHNNY FREEMAN Guard JOE COON Center JAMES HINES Forward ALBERT MORTON Guard THE BASKETBALL SQUAD Top Row: Billy Gil-mer, James Gustin, Joe Coon, Gene Cospeland, Art Thys, Charles Preskitt Bottom Row: jimmy Fullington, Red Walker, james Hines, Albert Morton, Johnny Freeman Center Row: Billie Ray Sparks, Manager. BASKETBALL 1948 Basket ball prospects at Woodlawn for '48 were not too bright. Only one letter man from the '47 squad r.emained, Captain Gene Copeland. All the sports writers consigned us to the Big Five cellar, but the squad refused to accept such a low position and at this writing fFeb. ZOJ is in third place. We won both games from Phillips and West End, split series with Bessemer and Tuscaloosa, and won 'single games from 'Minor and Ashville, losing both to Ensley and one to Ramsay, with the last Ramsay game yet to be played. With the squad losing only Captain Copeland and Center Gustin, the prospect for '49 seems much better than this yevar's was. Letter men were Jimmy Fullington, James Hines, Joe Coon, James Gustiln, johnny Freeman, Albert Morton and Captain Copeland. . 1. , wx' k 1 t - K fe s J fl! 5' J .Q Q ' 515 ' M nf -1' A SNI 4 qfivwq E S-I E if ff A ,W cf i' Wk BIG FIVE T , k5?,W M I DANCE S ff, R lk , .X u P 0 Tl., 2 A. After that game we were lbeaten only once again, then won two games 'from Anniston and one from Fairfield. When the season was over and we were 'in the county play-off, Woodlawn won three straight games, becoming Champions of Jefferson County. We had already won the City championship in regular league play. It is only fair to give credit to the boys that made winning these titles possible, .although they will not -be around for the 1948 season. Those not returning are the following: Red Gilbert, catcherg Thomas Smith and Fra-nk Stevens, pitchers, Bobby DeRieux, shortstop, Ott Fowler, third base, J. C. Powers, outfield. These boys will return: Gene Burnett, first baseg Honey Cut- cliffe, second 'baseg Gene Copeland, outfield, Tommy Rhaly and Earl Pearce, pitchers. Boys expected to help out this year are: Gene Powell, catcher, Red Walker, outfield, Charles Jones, shortstop, and Bdbby Wynne, third base. TRACK SQUAD FIRST ROW: Dale Randall, Wayne Coby, Ed Mitchell, Earl Payne, Billy Wiggins, Charles Lind, Frank Wall, jack LeGrand. SECOND ROW: John Thomas, Gene Burkett, Gerald Love, Don Byrd, Benny Clayton, Har- old Tate, jack Burleson. THIRD ROW: jerry DeRieux, Gene Lively, Woody Hargrove, joe McKee, Linwood Ed- wards, jerry Tibbett, jimmy Bethea, Gene Williams, Charles Preskitt, johnny Gassoway. TRACK 1947 The '47 team, while not up to the State Championship calibre of the '44, '45, and '46 squads, had excellent strength in the .running events but was weak in the field. The squad won dual meets with Phillips and Ensley, took second in a triangular meet with Lanier and Ramsay, and lost to West End. At the Alabama relays we won the Medley Relay and the 440. In the .state meet we won the 880 and finished third in team competition. Letter men were King, Preskitt, Milam, Smith, Srofe, Robbins, Reid, Pappas, Langner, Patterson, Burkett, Zarzoubr, and the captain for '48, Jerry DeRieux, who in December won the High School Divi- sion in the Optimists Road race.
