Except for the Woodlawn-Ensley game this game was the best played and hardest fought game of the prep season. VVOODLAVVN 46-Shades Cahaba 0 Because of greater experience and better players Woodlawn was able to trounce the Mountaineers by such an enormous score. Wood- lawn seemed on the way to a very successful season. WOODLAVVN 19-BESSEMER 0 After a poorly played first half, the Colonels came back with plenty of zip to score two touchdowns in the game at Bessemer Stadium. Robert Swivel-'hipped' D.ailey, the first string left half, was injured seriously in this game, and was not able to play again until the next to last game of the season. WOODLAWN 6-ENSLEY 13 No blocking and tackling and not much team- work put Woodlawn in the losing column after such a successful start. Ensley, with a better team and more reserves, proved to be just too much for the mighty Colonels. WOODLAWN 25-SELMA 7 Woodlawn, playing a superior br-and of ball all the way, wfas just too hot for the boys from Selma to handle. Selma scored its lone tally on a returned kick-off. Their fullback took the kick-off and raced th-e full length of the field for a touchdown. ' 5 BASKETBALL This year we stanted out with some letter- men from last year plus a few additions from the B team. The lentermen include Bobby De- Rieux, Gene Copeland, Robert Baggett, guards, Tommy Gammon, center, jay Milan, Red Gil- bert, forwards. The new additions are Buck Newm-an, Bobby Wynn, forwardsg Bill Carroll, centerg Bobby Srofe, Charles Preskitt, guards. Thus far in all season competitions we have five wins and six losses, and in Big Five games we have one win and five losses. Although we have lost most of the games, excellent ball has been played and the largest margin thus far has been six points. We still have a few games left and hope to finish with over a 500 percent- age standing. WOODLAWN 6-PHILLIPS 14 Duri.ng the week preceding this game the Colonels were struck a mighty blow. They found that two of their regulars were ineligible and h-ad been all year. This meant forfeiture of all games played up to this time. The boys went into the Philips game heavy-hearted, but played well considering the mishap. They again came out on the short end of the score. Phillips was sparked by Herbie M-arler land Bill Branch. WOODLAWN 7-Sidney Lan-ier 18 Only the brilliant playing of Tommy Edwards brought Woodlawn the seven points. The Poets were too heavy to be moved and too hard to Le stopped as the Colonels bowed again.'As one coach put it, they beat us 18 to Tommy. Tommy scored the touchdown and kicked the extra point. WOODLAWN 6-WEST END O Honey Cutcliffe, shifted to about every po- sition on the team, ended up at left half for this game. T-hiss proved to be the turning point of the game, for it was he who scored our winning six points. Witlh added pep the Colonels moved the 215-pound tackles and 190-pound guuards to march triumpihantly away with another vic- tory. Forgetting the game we forfeited, we had a 5-3 win-loss stat-istics. ,4 N BASEBALL A team of Thomas Smimh, Frank Stevens, Tommy Rahly, Robert Baggett Clharles Gilbert, Gene Powell, Bobby DeRieux, Gene Copeland, Ott Fowler, -I. C. Powers, Honey Cutcliffe, all returned lettermen, should prove to be a win- ning ooimbination this spring. Last year we came out third in league standings. With a lot of new boys to pick from plus the excellent play- ers aforementioned, the Colonels should boast a first place team. ' 5 TENNIS The tennis team, coached by Mr. Carter, won first place in the Big League oompetion of 1946. In the State tournament Malcolm Coates won the singles title and Malcolm and Davis won the doubles crown. This year the team should be the dark horse in tennis because of lack of experience among their ranks.
