These virtues have made Woodlawn High School dear to us. Through this, our anunai, may we relive our joys, our triumphs, and our memories. Ralph Martin SALUD ELIZABETH HUNT STEADHAM AV REVOIK. MISS STEADHAM In ihc spring of 1922, when Wood lawn High School first pcned it door lo the hoy and girl of the eastern section of Birmingham, Miss Elisabeth Steadham started on her busy career at Woodlawn. She began a instructor in Spanish and session room teacher of Room 5 (the present Room 3). For two years she worked, helping to get the new high school under way; then she felt the urge to travel. She sailed for Europe, and spent a year studying in France and Spain. In the fall of 1926 she returned to Woodlawn High School. It was at thin time that the became interested in the marshals and was appointed assistant faculty ad visor of the new marshal force. Soon after, she wa chief marshal sponsor and worked tire le s!y in that capacity for the neat dozen year . When no longer marshal sponsor, she assisted with the organization until the past year. It ha been through her zeal and inspiration that the marshal force hat developed into the splendid organization that it is today. In 1927, upon the death of Mr. Reams, Head of the Language Department, Mis Steadham was appointed to fill the vacancy. The teacher under her have found her most cooperative and thoughtful of their welfare. In order to make their work lighter she ha often taken over dutie that as Head of the Department the might have delegated to others. Her pupils have been given, along with the study of the French and Spanish languages, a knowledge of the countries where these languages are spoken and an appreciation of the people and their custom . Stories of her travels in foreign land have helped to enrich the courses she ha taught. In addition to her regular class work, her marshal work, and her duties a Head of the Department. Miss Steadham, during the principalship of Mr. Bandman, was Home Visitor, her duties corresponding somewhat to those of Girls Advisor today. This work entailed visit to the homes of pupils and required time outside of school hours. Miss Steadham has been Faculty Representative of the P.-T. A. She has been instrumen- tal in having teacher membership in the P.-T. A. one hundred per cent. Miss Steadham has not been too busy to he friendly at all time with teacher and pupils. She ha always had time for little chats in the hall ; she has had time for such thoughtful act a taking two new girls out to their home in Roebuck when they had missed connections with a schoolmate that was to how them how to get home. She has had time to help her pupils entertain, in her home, French cadets on visits to Birmingham. There are countless other thoughtful thing she has done for people. Nobody can work forever as hard a Miss Steadham has worked; therefore, she has decided that at the end of thi semester she i leaving the teaching profession to retire. At first the new world was enough to scare them out of their half-wits ... I mean half out of their wit . But they managed to survive the ordeal and Woodlawn High became home to 268 brand new Freshmen. Here they were allowed to have a say-so in choosing their officers, but here also they had a detention hall. Here they could go out in the stadium half of their lunch period, but here also they had only 22 minutes to cat. For every pleasure there was a drawback, but for every drawback there was a pleasure. And time marched on. The first year brought confusion, worries and fun. Much hard work and time were consumed in working out problems that would have an effect on high school career . For instance, it required a considerable amount of time to learn the shortest ways to the lunch room from both 102 and 201, how to dispose of chewing gum in a hurry, and where in creation the Taller box was. But there was fun to go along with it. In the spring there was “W”-Day, and not only did the Freshmen have the lovliest queen but they won the yelling contest, too. It was a proud day in the lives of the 268. And then, of course, there was football; and, through the good influence of these new students and considerable effort on the part of the team, Woodlawn walked off with the championship. And time stumbled on. Naturally, the second year brought its problems. Among them were plane geometry, dates, Gareth and Lynette, dates, ancient history, dates, and blonde date . The Sophomores spent a great deal of time learning just exactly how many people would fit between each row of lockers during an air raid drill and a great deal more learning bow many folk would fit in a coupe when Pop let them have the car. The foorball team didn’t do so badh that year either, and Woodlawn kept her place on top. And time crawled on. The third year brought Mr. Martin and green paint. Mixed with the sorrow of losing Mr. Hendrix was the glad feeling of being lucky enough to get a man as swell as Mr. Martin to take his place. And mixed in with the lovely smell of the newly painted walls were the distinctive, unforgettable odors of burning sulphur in the chemistry labs and cabbage in the lunch room. Once again we came out football champs. By this time, however, lots of our men folks bad left us; for the call of Uncle Sam was one that could not be denied. So we crawled into the home stretch. The fourth year brought homework, school-work, and creamed onions. Aviation students developed a rare interest in the weather; art Modem suddenly became interested in their an; music students suddenly began to sing a little louder and journalism students woke up. Soon they would be leaving Woodlawn and the thought that the poor kid remaining behind would never again enjoy the pleasure of their combined company left a sad feeling in their hearts that could only be covered with work. The idea that unless they did get busy they wouldn’t graduate never entered their heads. And so the Seniors worked away. “To be or nor to he became mixed with the “main nopulation changed in the U. S. since the Civil War”. Then bibliographies and graduation hooks turned up everywhere and the job was done. The Senior were ready to graduate. Time curled up and went to sleep. The night was clear and balmy, a perfect night for a football game, and the stand were filled to capacity. The game looked a if it would end in a 0 0 deadlock, but a Bessemer mistake was a Woodlawn gain. It was fourth down. Bessemer's ball and only inches to go; Bemmer elected to run. Cecil Gaines, powerful right guard for the Colonels, broke through the Tigers' line and threw Red Patton for a six yard loss. Beautiful run by Luck, Daily, and Wallace brought the bail down to the Bessemer 13 yard stripe. Three plays later Kay Laney, capable quarterback, faked a reverse to Daily, straightened up and tossed a beautiful pa into the waiting arm of David Luck. Wallace converted and the game ended — Woodlawn 7, Bessemer 0. RAMSAY 12—WOODLAWN 6 Ten thousand spectators saw the Woodlawn Colonels go down fighting against a powerful Ramsay eleven at Legion Field. This was Woodlawn' first Big Five game of the season and it first Big Five defeat since 193S. The Ram attack was led by Joe Hicks, speedy halfback. In the early minute of the game Hicks drove over right tackle, cut back to the sideline in the secondary and scampered 47 yards for a touchdown, Ramsay led 6-0. The Colonels, however, with a true spirit that is typical of Woodlawn teams charged back on a 70 yard drive led by Laney, Luck, and Daily to even the score — six all. The score was made by Lanrv on a three yard plunge. Wallace failed to convert. Hicks was not through for the night, for in the third quarter “little dynamite'' plunged through the line and paced off 67 yards to pay dirt. Ramsay failed to convert and the game ended — Ramsay 12, Woodlawn 6. Many tear were shed to see the Colonel go down in defeat after 37 consecutive wins. WOODLAWN 14—ENSLEY 6 The Colonel returned to the gridiron, after being topped by Ramsay the week hefore, :o serk revenge. Revenge was found and the Colonels came out of a hard fought game on top 14-6. The first period ended with the core 0 0, but the picture was changed in the second quarter when Jack Chambliss, Colonel end, downed McQueen' punt on the Ensley 14. The Jackets attempted to punt, but Laney broke through the line to block the kick and Dewey Lee covered the ball behind the goal. Laney converted and the second quarter ended with Woodlawn ahead 7-0. In the closing minute of the third quarter, Enslev's Dick Webb took a reverse from Logan and plunged three yard to pav dirt. The conversion wa blocked and Shot Sent)' boy led 7-6. With minute to play, Rav Laney faked a reverse to Daily and handed it to Chambliss who galloped around end and down the side line 35 yard for a tally. Laney converted to make the final score 14-6, favor of the Colonel . WOODLAWN 8—PHILLIPS 6 The heavily favored Woodlawn Colonels were given a scare by the Phillips Crimsons before emerging an 8-6 victor in a top-notch tilt at Legion Field. After trailing the Crimson for three quarters, the Colonels made a last-minute comeback, scoring a safety and touchdown in quick succession to edge out the Phillipians who yearly gives the Colonels a good fright. Cecil Gaines started the scoring for the Colonels by blocking Charles Aycock's punt behind the Phillips goal. Aycock recovered and the Colonels were given two points on the safety. Four plays later the Colonels hit pay-dirt again, this time it wa a touchdown with Fullback A. r. Daily giving a good exhibition of broken field running. Daily evaded several would-be tackier on his 26 yard run. The Raiders made their lone tally toward the end of the first quarter when Johnson hurled an aerial to Charles Flurry good for 33 yards and a touchdown. Brown failed to convert. This win put the Colonels in a second place tie with Ensley and kept them ih the running for the Crippled Children's Clinic game. Later wins by Ramsay eliminated them. WEST END 26—WOODLAWN 0 Coach Ernest Teel's Lion ended a long West End championship drought by rolling over the Colonels, 26 to 0, in the last Big Five game of the season. Thirteen thousand Fall Weather' fan saw the Colonels go down in defeat for the third time this season. West End scored twice in the second and once each in the third and fourth periods. Me Ree, fullback, scored first on a II yard jaunt around end. All-Stater Dick Flournoy sparked the Lion ’ attack bv exhibiting plenty of spe-rd along with beautiful broken field running. The Colonels just couldn't connect with aerials and the powerful West End line crushed any attempts to run. Woodlawn’ only threat to score was in the first period when runs by Daily, Laney and Luck put the ball on the Lion ' 16. Luck fumbled a reverse from Laney, ending the scoring attempt. The Lions went on to a decisive victors- but the Colonel took the defeat in a spirit that typifies a Woodlawn High eleven. WOODLAWN 20—SIDNEY LANIER 7 The Colonel marched over the Poet of Sidney Lanier to the tune of 20 to 7, scoring tallies in ail but the third period in a contest that wa highlighted by the Colonel outstanding blocking and tackling Shot Senn's boy scored fir t on a 17 yard drive lead by A. J. Daily, David Lurk, and Ray Laney. Daily scored from the two yard stripe. Laney converted. The Colonel trod pay-dirt again in the second period copping a 5 yard push on run by Daily, McQueen, and Chambles . Luck scored and Woodlawn led at the half 13 to 0. Sidney Lanier scored next in the fourth period. Whitehurst' pa tp Walter was good for 27 yard to the Colonel's one, Whitehurst scored and Downs converted. The last score of the game came after a 74 yard pu h by Woodlawn. Ray Laney plunged through the Lanier line from the one. Laney converted and the game ended, Woodlawn 20, Lanier 7. MIAMI 39—WOODLAWN 6 Hurling touchdown punches from all over the lor, the Miami Stingarecs knocked out VVuodlawn, 39 to 6, before a crowd of 9,128 Fall Weather fans at the Orange Bowl StJ-dium. The sparkling Stings scored in the first minutes of play, when Peter Rabbit Williams (All-southern half-back) returned a Woodlawn punt 47 yards for a t.d. and then piled across on a 99J4 yard sustained drive in the last minute of play. In between first and last minute scores the Miamians swept 90, 42, and 64 yards for additional touchdowns. The Colonels struck 3$ yards for their score soon after Miami scored, after end Bobby Ragsdale put them into position by recovering a Miami fumble on the 35. Fullback Daily, quarterback Laney, and end Chambliss, aided t y a ten yard pass from McQueen to Ragsdale, moved the ball to the two vard line. Daily lobbed a pass off a spinner into the end zone to 'Ragsdale. Laney failed to convert. At this point the score stood 7 to 6 in favor of Miami but the Stings went on to pile up a 39 to 6 victory before the final whistle blew. TRACK By Joe Terry Bishop John Blane’s track team came out on top this year in the State meet not only with total points but also in individual honors. Those taking fhese honors were: Elton Wesley First Place Mile Dan Newsome Third Place Mile Stewart Sutton First Place High ic Low Hurdles Tommy Tucker First Place High Jump Bill Prentice Third Place High Jump The Colonels took part in only two meets this year in Big Five competition, winning from Ramsay and losing to West End by one point. Coach Blane awarded the letters at the May Day ceremonies. Those receiving letters were: John Blane, Jr., Gene Byrd, Tommy Steel, Dan Newsome, Elton Wesley, Stewart Sutton, B:ll Prentice, James Clark, Bobby Weldon, Robert Wamsley, Tommy Tucker, and Tommy Crawford. We here at Woodlawn are proud of our track team in the splendid way that you upheld the traditions of Woodlawn, keep it up. TENNIS BASEBALL By Joe Terry Bishop The baseball team went through a successful season this year, winning four of seven starts in Big Five league play and placed fourth in the district meet, they were eliminatetd in the semi-finals by Shades Cahaba, 3 to 2. The Colonels took to the field against Ramsay three times. West End twice and Ensley twice. Those receiving letters from Coach Senn were: Earl Mize, Gordon Pettus, Malcolm Frew, Ray Laney, Jack Mayer, Roy Smalley, ‘Bud’ Bourn, Bobby Ragsdale, Lewis Lawley, ‘Red’ Thomas, Eugene Driver, and Zeke' Isaacs. Members of the squad that did not receive letters were: Herman Moore, Charley Helm , B. C. King, Bobby Lott, and Robert Baggett. The Colonels will have ten men returning next spring to represent us on the baseball diamond, the best of luck to them. BASKETBALL By Joe Terry Bishop The Woodlawn cagers played a successful war-time schedule this year winning five games out of eleven starts. Under the able toutership of Coach John Blane the Colonels handed out defeats to every big five team except Ensley. Incidentally the Ensley five represented the Fifth District in the State Tournament this year; so this accounts for the two defeats Woodlawn received at the hands of the Yellow Jackets., At mid-season the Colonels looked as if they were going to come out on top in the Big Five competition after defeating a heavily favored Corner five 32 to 31. In my estimation this was the best game the Colonels turned out all season. Although the Colonels did not receive the Fifth District Championship, they were well represented in various selections. Captain Zeke Isaacs held third place berth on the Big Five leading scorer list with 89 points to his credit, he also was picked second string center for the All-District team. Bill Prentice received honorable mentions on the All-District team also. The leading scorers were as follows: Isaacs (101); Teem (68); Prentice (64); Frew (48); Covington (44). By Joe Terry Bishop Coach John Carter has high expectations for hi '45 tenni combinations, after losing only three lettermen from last years' squad. Those lost were Billy Kent, L. V. Chafin. and Al Brooks. This vear we have five lettermen returning and approximately ten new recruits. Morris Dillard, who played on double last year, moved up to No. I. Three newcomers: Beverly Sawyer, last vear at Sidney Lanier, or Jack Forstman at No. 2. John Jordan is No. 3 man. In an effort to get a strong doubles combination, Joe Harper and Jimmy Cumb, who played singles last year, have been paired for No. I spot. Roy Scholl and Paul Meeks, two newcomers, will work at No. 2 doubles. No spot has been cinched definitely this year. Those letterin last year were: Jimmy Cumb, Willie Covington, Joe Harper, Morris Dillard, H--bert Hanes, Billy Kent, L. V. Chafin. and At Brooks. We are wishing the tennis team the best of luck in their 194$ campaign.
