Upon hi shoulders rested the task of turning a group of inexperienced boys, with only one regular letter man returning, into a squad that would be up to par as much as other Big Five Teams. By the time the first scheduled game rolled around, Coaches Laney and J. O. Simmons proved their worth by turning a group of greenies into a first-class team. As the Colonels of 1943 took their positions on the athletic field where their teammates before them had previously won Woodlawn four consecutive championship crowns, they were rated as a whole, an unfinished, light, and inexperienced team, slightly better than smaller squads. But through the determination to carry on the fighting spirit exhibited before them, these boys rang up the most successful season Woodlawn has ever seen in its history. The completed schedule stacked up 211 points for the Colonels to a mere 15 for their opponents. The Woodlawn aggregation was led by Captain Paul Arthur and Alternate Captain Harry Gilmer. At ends were: Arthur, Elwyn Reed, Bobby Ragsdale, Jack Chambliss, Bill Farrar, Billy Daverson, Jack Elliot; tackles—Donald Florence, Lewis Lawley, Carl Mc-Cool, Herbert Hanes, Billy Kent; guards—Ivan Leonard, Cecil Gaines, Billy Conway, Donald Hamby, Dewey Lee, Gene Driver; centers—Bill Prentice, James Clark, Bud Stewart; fullbacks—Coker Barton, A. J. Dally, Kendall Adkins, John Wilson; quarterbacks— Charles Langner, Ray Laney, Henry Thompson; halfbacks— Harry Gilmer, Gordon Pcttus, Bobby Weldon, Gene McQueen, David Lux. At the end of the season the squad not only returned for a benefit duel with their fierce opponents, the Ensley Yellow Jackets, but also placed these five men on the annual All City team: Arthur, end; Law-ley. tackle' Leonard, guard; Langner, quarterback; and Gilmer, back. Of these five, two—Arthur and Gilmer—were selected unanimously by all Big Five coaches. Named on the second team were: Ragsdale, end; Florence, tackle; and Pcttus, back. Sensational star of the season was Gilmer at left-halfback. Not only was he placed as All-State and All-Southern, but became the third winner of the coveted Quarterback’s Trophy, awarded to the outstanding football player of Jefferson County. His breath-taking leaps into the air and passes became a trade-mark for the Woodlawn team. Congratulations from the Senior Class of 1944 are offered to this great group of boys who could well be called the greatest team ever to represent Woodlawn on the athletic field. Lawley has been selected to lead the next squad to take its place on the field and he will have Gordon Pcttus as the team's Alternate-Captain. To these two we offer special congratulations; and, to next year's squad, we wish a highly successful season with the same excelled brand of sportsmanship and skill exhibited by the 1943 championship team. WOODLAWN 9—BESSEMER 6 This was our opening game and until the last three minutes of play, it seemed like our last. Before the last shrill from the starting whistle had died in the stands, Bessemer had chalked up a touchdown against the Colonels. Then Bessemer led the remainder of the g3tne until Gilmer leaped high into the air and planted his pass into Arthur’s waiting hands over the goal. This game could also be called the Charles Langner Tilt as it was he that booted the extra point to put Woodlawn in the lead. WOODLAWN 14— DUPONT MANUAL 7 Our first out-of-town game came as a surprise triumph to eager fans especially after the Bessemer threat. Again the Colonels' opponents, once national champs, deadlocked a 7-all game until the last minutes of play when Gilmer passed to Gordon Pettus who smashed over on the next play. WOODLAWN 32—RAMSAY 0 Here Woodlawn defended its famed title 3gainst a powerful Blue line, which lacked sufficient offensive action from the back field. The Colonels were none too superstitious, though, to end the contest with identical score of last year’s Ramsay tilt. WOODLAWN 6— ENSLEY 0 Decidedly a championship game was at stake this night as the Colonels played before 19,000 fans. The Colonels were up against the heaviest and must powerful offensive squad they had yet encountered. There were tense moments. Actually Woodlawn scored three touchdowns, but two of them were called back. The game ended with only a one touchdown margin between the keenest rivals in Big Five history. The result was a return match later for the benefit of the Crippled Children's Clinic. WOODLAWN 53—JEFFERSON COUNTY 0 A completely outclassed Jeffico squad took a terrific beating from Wood lawn's mighty Colonels in this game in which Jefferson offered no opposition whatsoever in offensive action. Woodlawn scored at will but demonstrated the true Woodlawn sportsmanship spirit of the winner and cheered their opponents. WOODLAWN 20— PHILLIPS 0 Here an equal proportion involving line strength weight, and powerful opposition was found on both squads. A decisive factor in the city charnpionsip crown, the Crimson contest was one of the hardest to plough through in all Woodlawn-Phillips games. Again the passes of the pride of Woodlawn High School, Harry Gilmer, proved too much for the R“d Raiders to handle. WOODLAWN 26—SIDNEY LANIER 0 The invaders from the capital city found quite a reception awaiting them at the hands of the Birmingham boys. The Colonels really took it out on the Poets, since Sidney Lanier was the last team to defeat Woodlawn, way back in 1940. The Poets failed to cash in on quite a few lucky breaks that chanced their way, thus paving the way for the sixth Colonel victory of the season. WOODLAWN 32—WEST END 0 During the opening quarter of this, our last contest toward a fifth consecutive season, the Colonels failed to get underway as rapidly as in previous games. The Lions were on the verge of taking ad-vantage of this lull to prove themselves the same opposition West End offered in the championship game last year with Woodlawn. Favorable results cashed in later in the game, although, and the Colonels went wild, scoring against their opponents almost at will. ('RIPPLED CHILDREN S BENEFIT GAME NVOODLAWN 19—ENSLEY 0 November 26, 1943—the night of all night in Birmingham high school football. And it was Harry Gilmer’s night for football, too. The Enslcy Yellow Jackets had been previously convinced that nil their hopes lay in stopping Wood!awn's star back before he could pass his deadly shots. Even on the first play not just one Jacket, but the entire Enslcy team nut to use their month’s practice at rushing the backficld for the kill, and succeeded in nailing Gilmer down before his man was in the clear. Enslcy ran into fierce interference from the Colonel line that played the best football of the season in stopping huge Enslcy players reaching out for Gilmer. The fir t touchdown came late in the second quarter and was the result of Gilmer's passes after high leaps into the air. With the same pass that netted Wood-lawn’s first touchdown, Gilmer faded back almost 20 yards from the line of scrimmage and was almost trapped until he leaped into the air, turned the ball loose, and it found its way to Gordon Pettus, standing over the double stripes. Another identical pass to Pettus placed the Colonels on the Jacket one yard line for the third counter. Then tanglier crossed the stripes standing and converted for the extra point to finish the score off at 19-0. Playing to a capacity crowd of 27,000, the largest crowd ever to see a high school football game in the South, Woodlawn boys placed their game in the better ranks of athletics. Another result of this victory was a bid from Miami High School to come in Florida to play in a contest with the Southern Prep Title at stake. Athletic associations in Alabama declined to permit this game. But each member of the Senior Class of 1944 has a special memory to remain with them in years to come of this team—that the significance of the game these boys played will be a beacon and also a challenge to teams to follow. Climax of the season was the awarding of the Charles A. Brown County Championship Trophy for the third consecutive time to give Woodlawn the permanent possession of the coveted trophy. TENNIS By Gordon Norman Prospect' for the 1944 tennis season arc promising at this writing, although the Tennis team has suffered the loss of five star players: Bill Peeples, Hagins Tyler, Claude Hollums, Lem Johns, and Forrest Short Only two star lettcrmen will return to take up their rackets again plus the team’s managers, Roy Vance and Tabor Green, who arc very good material for this year’s team. The two returning lettcrmen are L. V. Chafin and Billy Kent, who at present are in training with Gordon Pettus and Charles Prentice. Last year's B” team also contains excellent material, including: AI Brooks, Roy Scholls, Paul Meeks, Bobby Stone, and William Covington. The 1943 team was hard hit by losses to the service, but managed to tie Phillips for second place in the Jefferson County League. The 1944 schedule is to open April 1 and we arc looking forward to a most successful season. BASEBALL The 194 3 Baseball Team was unusually good, compared to past squads, having placid second in the City Baseball League at the end of its successful season In the finals, Woodlawn lost a game with Phillips, the final victor, 2-1, but won the second game. The last and deciding game caught Woodlawn red-handed with a defeat of 16-7. Jack Berry served as Captain and Catcher. James Holloway and Gene Palmer, star pitchers who also starred on this team, are now in the service. Maloy Wooten played second base; Buford Tucker, first; Gordon Pettus, third; Maxie Bender, and Charles Prentice, short stop; Bobby Ragsdale, and Richard Hahns, right field; Joe 'Fucker, center field; and James Thomas, and Harry Gilmer at left field. TRACK By Gordon Norman I’he members of the Woodlawn Track team carried on a very successful season in the Spring of 1943. Their winnings showed definite proof of their ability to succeed in their undertakings and each player was conscious of the true Wodlawn spirit of athletics. The returning lettcrmen included: Clarence McCullough, Elton Wesley, and Bill Prentice. Dan Newsome, Tommy Crawford, Merrill Cook were also on the team. These hoys won victories over Phillips. West End, Ramsay, and Enslcy. Despite the loss of Captain Robert Holmes and Weightman Leon Cochran, the team still managed to take second place in the State Meet losing to Phillips 37J -36. Clarence McCullough won first place in the 220 yard dash with an unusual time of 23.4 seconds, and placed second in the 100 yard dash. Bill Prentice won first place in the high jump, the pole leveled at 5 feet 8 inches Hugh Sorrell won first place in the mile run with a time of 4 minutes 57.7 seconds. Ernest Mastin came in first for the quarter mile run in 52,7 seconds, lie also placed second in the broad jump. Billy Ray Floyd won third place in the State Meet for the shot put. Elton Wesley finished second in the mile run. Chances run exceedingly high for four first places in the State Meet in 1944, thus bringing the State Track Championship Title to Woodlawn. past master of many field' of sports. BASKETBALL By Gordon Norman Due to losses to the service and the war, the 1944 basketball team was hard hit and lacked sufficient offensive power to bring home another basketball crown. By no means did the Court Colonels fail to put up a stiff fight. The team won victories over Phillips. Bessemer, Ramsav, West End, Tuscaloosa, but lost to Enslcy, Corner, West End. Bessemer Ramsay, in one of the top-notch seasons for the Court Colonels of 1944.
