Jane Deems Elected Good Citizenship Girl Jane entered Wood lawn from Holman School in the fall of 1939. She has held several session room offices, having been president of her session room in the first semester. Because of her high scholastic record she wns made a member of the National Honor Society in her sixth semester, of the Euclidian Honor Socitcy of which she was president last semester, and also Jane Deems, who is a member of the senior class, was recently elected the good citizenship girl of Wood lawn High School. She was elected on dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism as the girl who could best represent Wood-lawn High School in the D. A. R.'s Good Citizenship Contest. a member of the Glee Club. Service on the Home Front IHR nOBLE B. HERDRIX Prncipal of IDoodlawn High School THE PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE The year 1942-43 has been a memorable one in the annals of Wood lawn. Late in 1941 our country had been attacked and we had been forced into a war of self-preservation. Hundreds of those who once walked these halls have become the Soldiers, the Sailors, the Marines, the Merchant Seamen, the Nurses, the WAACS, the WAVES and the SPARS in the uniform of their country. Other hundreds have entered war industry and war services, and are helping supply and serve those in uniform. Still others arc rendering the invaluable service of maintaining the civilian work which must go in if we arc to be an effective warring nation. All of us have a sense of pride that those who had their training here are among the most patriotic, loyal, and useful Americans in this time of danger and trouble for the nation. During the year we have made our best effort to help our country in every way that school people can. We have worked to continue effective training for you who will now go out to use that training. We have joined in all the programs of service open to schools. Through all this we have turned to our school in deeper appreciation and stronger loyalty because it, along with the other parts of American life, was thought worth defending to the death by boys and men we love. The Class of 1943 has made its full contribution to the year's successes. It has served the country well in sticking to its job. Its members will be the same kind of loyal, faithful, dependable Americans our other graduates have been. They have our love, our confidence, and our prayers for their happiness and their success. THE MUSIC DEPARTMENT In all of the music presented this year to the student body, clubs, and concerts ior the public, we have given more patriotic music than ever before. We sing our National .Anthem in classrooms and on every occasion possible. The Christmas Festival of Music had 275 vocal students participating from the music department. The orchestra played for both plays and for the P.-T. A. night program. The Girls Glee Club and the Warblers Club sang an excellent program for the latter event. In the harmony classes, two of our students won first and second prizes in their original compositions at the Alabama State Fair. Our Con- cert Band played a splendid concert on April 2. anu also at one ot tne programs for the convention of the Alabama Education Assn. The piano and private voice pupils, assisted by the High School Choir (Girls Glee Club and Warblers Clqb), gave two delightful programs in April. The Warblers presented two performances of their fine minstrel, one being to the men in service at the Air Base. The main event for the vocal classes was presented May 7 in an Evening of Music tn which 375 vocal students sang a beautiful program. —Claude Dowling, Dept Head. The Junior Colonels won this great honor the hard way. Placing second in the District Meet under Phillips, Woodlawn battled all the way and took the basketball crown well in hand. Composed of a fighting group of lightning fast ball handlers, the boys from this side of Birmingham completely baffled the teams in the statemeet and came out victor over a hard-fighting Selma team. After the basketball season had been in progress a few weeks this Spring, Woodlawn was dealt two defeats at the hands of a strong Ramsay five. As Coach Blane's boys gained more experience, they also gained the will to win. Along with Ensley, Phillips, and West End, Ramsay also fell under the stroke of the Woodlawn Champs. They all fell victim to this renovated team. It was a hard fought battle in the Big Five after the Colonels once got started. At the season's end. all decisions were in somewhat of a muddle, but the crown was given to Woodlawn. Both Ensley and Ramsay fought a close race and were dose behind. Guard Harry Gilmer and Forward Jack Berry were two of the five Alabama High School boys chosen on the All-State basketball team by a poll of coaches, sports writers, and officials. Center Gene Palmer, another Woodlawn star, was chosen on the second five. Leon Cochrane's great defensive play was one of the mainstays in the Colonel attack. Buford Tucker was also very effective on the defense and was quite a hawk on the basket during the season. To this great championship basketball team, we. the senior class of 1943, offer our heartiest congratulations. TRACK By Clifford Cheat wood The members of the Woodlawn Track Team, although handicapped by inexperience, carried on a somewhat successful season in the spring of 1£ 2. Their losses were not too bad and they showed the true spirit of Woodlawn by never letting up. The lettermen included Holmes. Mastin, Sorrell, Parker. Adcrholt, Cochrane, and Hallmark. Hopkins, a former letterman. will return this year. The team won victories over West End and Enslcy. but lost to Bessemer and Phillips. However, the team made a comeback finish by taking third place in the State meet. Parker was second in the 880. Adcrholt second in the mile, and Cochrane second in the discuss throw. A prosperous season seems to be in line for the '43 team with four lettermen returning and several good prospects entering for this year’s team. TENNIS By Herman Armstrong The Woodlawn Tennis Team is ready to open its 1943 bid for the city title. In competition last year the Woodlawn team placed third in the league standing. The first game of the season is with West End and all Woodlawn is riding with high hopes on the 1943 team. I st year the team was composed of Leslie I-ongshorc. James Carr, Ed Robertson. Billy Boone, and Balfour Thompson, who graduated last year. The remaining letter men who will return this year arc Bill Peeples and Hagins Tyler. This year die team’s hojics are resting on the two letter men and the last year's “B team. Three of the B team’s members are Claude Hollums, Billy Kent, and Rein Schlitz. Woodlawn has won the city title three times in the last ten years and we are counting on this years team to prove that Woodlawn cannot be overcome in any sport. BASEBALL By Clifford Cheat wood Under the able guidance of Coach Laney, the Wood lawn Baseball Team carried on a successful season in the spring of 1W2. winning a total of six games and losing but two. At the season's end Woodlawn was tied with West End for the division championship, but lost to the West End boys by a narrow margin in the play-off at Rickwood Field. The members of the '42 team who received letters were as follows: Berry and Fox. catchers: Itsacs and Aderholt, lb; Wooten. 2b; Pettus. ss: Armstrong, 3b; Prentice, utility infieldcr; Hand. FOOTBALL 1942 By Herman Armstrong and Clifford Cheatwood As the football season neared its starting game, Birmingham sports writers classed the Woodlawn team as inexperienced and light. The line was light and had six green men to start the season. The backficld was only slightly better, boasting only three reserves from last year. Everywhere Woodlawn was rated as a dark horse in the coming campaign with little hope of repeating the championship performance given by the last three teams to represent the school. Although picked to lose a few games, Woodlawn could always be looked upon to give a good fi '.ht in anybody's football game, they said. This squad, which a few months earlier looked unfinished and green, was turned into a first class football team by Coach Malcolm Lancy and Assistant Coach J. O. Simmons. These coaches proved their worth by turning a group of inexperienced boys into a strong foot ball team. As the season roared on, the Colonels again proved their superiority against all competition. The Woodlawn so-called weak team proved beyond the question of a doubt its claim to the City and State Championship. Woodlawn flashed through a fast-moving season completing their schedule with all victories and not a single blemish against a spotless record. Our hip-swaying backs piled up a total of 207 points for Woodlawn against a mere 14 for their opponents. The Woodlawn aggregation was led through a successful season by Captain Doyle Kezzire, fullback, and Alt. Captain A. B. Marlow, tackle. At the ends were Arthur and Chambless; tackles. Tucker and Marlow; guards. Duncan and Rush; center, Prentice. At the quarterback position was Cochrane; halfbacks, Tidwell and Montgomery, and fullback, Kczzire. From this squad of first-class boys, five were chosen on the coaches' annual all-city team. They were: Prentice, Marlow, Cham-bless, Cochrane and Tidwell. Named on the second string were Duncan, Rush, and Kczzire. Two of our great players, Cochrane and Chambless, were selected on the all-state team. Tidwell, sensational halfback, was selected on the second string all-state team. Out of this great group of athletes, Woodlawn was very proud to have one of its star football players named on the All-Southern team. This high honor was achieved by quarterback Cochrane, who was always good for a steady gain on offense, and a demon on the defense. Congratulations are offered by the Senior Class of 1943 to the outstanding merits worked for and achieved by this great group of boys who could well be called the outstanding team ever to represent Woodlawn on a football field. Cochrane was elected by the football squad to lead the team as captain next year, with Joe Tucker as alternate captain. To these two we offer special congratulations; and to next year’s squad, a highly successful season with the same fine brand of sportsmanship and talented skill exhibited by the 1942 championship team. WOODLAWN 32—RAMSAY 0. Woodlawn’s champion Coloncu opened the 1942 campaign in a grandstand bid for the City Championship with a smashing defeat handed to an out-classed Ramsay team. Iroro the moment the game opened the Woodlawn backs completely ran the Blues from Ramsay off the field. The mainstay in the Colonal stuck was Capt. Kezzire. His crushing drive from one side of the line to the other had the defenses of the opposition as slow as out-dated barrage balloons. Kezzire, looking very much like a pursuit plane, set sail right through for forty-four and thirty-nine yards respectively. There was little doubt after the victory over a wcakcr-than-usual Ramsay eleven that die Colonels were off on another championship jaunt. Tidwell, Cochrane. Gilmer and Montgomery were very effective in a great backfield; while Rush, Marlow. Chambless, and Tucker were standouts in the line. Woodlawn’s backs rolled up 327 yards, all on the ground, while a superb line held the Blues to a mere 54 yards rushing and no completed passes. WOODLAWN 44—CHATTANOOGA a What a night for a football game! As the rain came pouring down in sheets, the Woodlawn squad took the field and completely routed an out-classed Chatunooga team in a decisive 44 to 0 triumph. Pcttus was the little man behind the raindrops who sailed through the mud puddles like a General Sherman tank. Almost everyone on the squad had an opportunity to scoot around in the mud, and still the ’Nooga team showed almost no opposition to our offensive spirit. Tidwell and Cochrane were heavy runners with Tidwell gaining a little more ground. Pettus counted for two touchdowns; Montgomery, one; Kezzire. one; Cochrane, one; Chambless. one. and Tidwell, one. Both of us, and the other three spectators who braved the drenching rains, enjoyed the game even from the wet angle. WOODLAWN 40—ENSLEY 0. Woodlawn’s big guns went hunting again and a hapless Enslry team fell victim to a sound tromping at the hands of a fast-moving, hard-hitting, quick-thinking Colonel team. Tidwell Co. cut loose all the power that could he mustered and ran up 23 first down to a lucky 4 for Enslcy. The City’s finest hacks gained a total of 246 yards running with the hall ami 133 on passes. The Woodlawn line held the Yellow jackets to a minus 10 yards gained on the ground, and 88 yards in the air. Tidwell, Montgomery, and Kexzirc took turns battering the line with the effect of a heavy bomber. Cochrane. Woodlawn's great quarterback, played a great game with his damaging blocks and crushing tackles, to say nothing of three conversions after touchdowns. WOODLAWN 25—SIDNEY LANIER 0. The Colonels continued on their march to victory and remained unbeaten and unscored on by beating Lanier 25 to 0. The Poets threatened once but after that the ball game was strictly Woodlawn’s. In the first quarter Kiz-xare, Tidwell, and Montgomery carried the ball to the Lanier six-yard line. I anicr took over and Woodlawn recovered a blocked put on the two and Tidwell drove through for the first touchdown. Chambless took a pass for 12 yards, and Tidwell broke away on a long jaunt to the Lanier 25. Kezzire made 12, and Montgomery cut wide to score standing up. In the third quarter, Tidwell broke away again to the Lanier 25 and twisted his way downfield to add again to the Colonel's score. Prentice intercepted Higdon’s pass midway of the fourth quarter; a Pettus-Gilmer combination carried the ball to the 20, and Tidwell passed to Montgomery for the final touchdown. Tucker added the only extra point of the night. Outstanding line play was credited to Rush. Prentice, and Duncan. WOODLAWN 39—PHILLIPS 7. On a wonderful night for football. Wood-lawn's stellar backs turned in a wonderful performance for 10,000 spectators. On a blocked put, the Red Raiders held a momentary 7 to 6 lead in the second quarter which left the football fans amazed for three minutes. But it was a short three minutes, for the aroused spirit of the state's outstanding team led to a quick touchdown, high-lighted by Cochrane's stirring catch of a 41-yard pass for a touchdown. Woodjawn’s class was too much for the Crimson line, but they never gave up and contests every advance. Contest was all though, for the boys kept driving through, time and time again. Montgomery turned in the evening’s performance when he tore through on a punt return for 81 yards, to be stopped on the Phillips one. Cochrane was high scorer with two touchdowns and three conversions after touchdowns. WOODLAWN 13—GULF COAST 7. In the closest game in which Woodlawn took part all season, the spectators at Legion Field witnessed one of the most spectacular plays of the year when Woodlawn’s ace halfback, Tidwell. hurled a beautiful SO-yard pass to Wood- lawn’s stellar end, Chambless. This play was the margin in Woodlawn's victory over a hard-fighting Gulf Coast eleven. Gulf Coast threatened late in the first quarter but the Woodlawn forward wall held for downs on the eight-yard line. Woodlawn began to move then. Cochrane made 28 yards before being knocked out of bounds; Montgomery added 14 more, and then Tidwell made that beautiful pass to Chambless for the first touchdown. Kezzire intercepted a pass on the Gulf Coast's 34 in the second quarter and returned it to the 17. Montgomery cut loose again for another 17-yard jaunt and another touchdown. Cochrane then added the extra point. On the kick-off in the second half Tidwell, doing a brilliant bit of broken field running. nearly broke away for another score. After several exchanges of punts failed to gain anything for either team, Gilmer's pass was intercepted by Kennedy of Gulf Coast and ran 67 yards to the Woodlawn three. From there Gulf Coast plowed over after a brilliant stand by the Woodlawn line. Expert punting by Chambless and a quick kick by Tidwell held Gulf Coast in check, and the game ended with Tidwell making a great run and being stopped only by the safety man. WOODLAWN 14—WEST END 0. Woodlawn met and conquered the most formidable opponent of the 1942 season in a grand style to wind up one of the most successful sea sons ever seen by Big Five followers. Woodlawn's stellar quarterback, Cochrane, and 10 other scrappy football players bowled over a hard-fighting West End team in the decisive game of the football campaign. It was Cochrane’s night for football and be ran the West End boys back to West End. After faking the ball to Tidwell, Cochrane came out from behind the Woodlawn line and headed in the general direction of Bessemer, solving the problem of opposition by simply running over them. The Woodlawn rooters who watched Cochrane place the ball over the goal line realized they were watching the Colonels paced to a stirring championship by one of the best teams ever to go through an undefeated season. Tidwell accounted for the second touch-down. During the course of the evening’s performance, the backfield rolled up a total of 326 yards. Superb play on the part of Woodlawn’s great line held the Lions to a total of only 59 yards rushing. But. however, they picked up 109 yards via the air method, and many times their passing offensive threatened to mar the 14 to 0 score established by our boys. Woodlawn gained all of its territory on the ground and presented the 13,000 spectators with the most l owerfu] ground game the Big Five has seen in many years. OLYMPIAN HONOR SOCIETY Miss Hamilton. THE CUSTODIAN AND HIS HELPERS Mr. I.Ioyd, our custodian for 17 years, has an enviable record at this school. Through his leadership he has built up a loyal group of helpers. These helpers work 12 hours a day, arriving at the building at six o'clock in the morning and leaving at six o’clock in the afternoon. Before eating breakfast, they dust all the classrooms, the bannisters, sweep and dust tire auditorium. After breakfast they help Mrs. Lykcs in the lunchroom until after dinner, after which the)- go back to their sweeping and dusting. The man who takes care of the boiler usually arrives at the school at four o’clock in the morning on cold days in order to have the building comfortable for the pupils. Through the efforts of Mr. Lloyd and his helpers. Wood lawn has 15 times won the certificate of merit for keeping a clean and safe building. Front row. left to right: Ed Smith, Mary Deane.
