Should we for’er forget this soot. Forsake old friends for new? Frankly, my friends, 1 think we won't; It's not the thing to do. And even, if we could, we won’t. To YVoodlawn we arc true! The years were happy that we spent vMong boys and girls we knew; And as from class to class we went We met new teachers, too. We starred here four years ago— Most all, at any rate, A few of us were somewhat slow; Some were detained by fate. Our freshman year was one of joy, But add a note to that: Every older girl and boy Smirked and called us “rat . On winged fee the next year came. And everyone could see We had outgrown that little name. For sophomores were we. Then we were very near the peak; Y'et we could not quite get The prize for which all students seek— We were mere juniors yet. And then our senior year rolled ‘round— Our sheepskins we had won! This organization was formed of pupils who serve as marshals, captain , assistant head marshal, head marshal, and teachers, who serve as sponsors. This force serves a definite purpose in the school. It is the duty of the marshals to make sure the halls are safe and orderly at all times, not jusj during the middle of a period. The cleanliness of the school is looked to by the marshal force. Property of the students must be protected. It is the duty of marshals to do this. One of our duties, which it also a privilege, is to create a spirit of friendliness and cooperation between the student body and the faculty. It is my sincere desire that we, the marshal force of Woodlawn High School, have fulfilled our duty as an organiation in this school—Mary Adelle Wilson, Head Marshal. MARSHAL FORCE HEAD SPONSOR, R. ENSIGN ROBERT BALLARD NAVY _____________________mu MAJOR JOHN J. MARTIN LI CHARLES E. SHARP AIR The Reserved Officers Training Corps of Woodlawn High School is composed of three companies: Company G, Company H, and Headquarters Company. This vear, there are 145 members of the Corps. The highlights of the year were the usual Armistice Day parade, the federal inspection in May, and the inter-city competition in May. The Woodlawn Rifle Club is composed of 30 picked members. Membership in this club shows excellence in drill. Club members may be identified by a citation cord which is worn exclusively by them. The Woodlawn R. O. T. Of the total number, there arc 234 who are graduates of W. H. S. while the others are non-graduates. The service men are divided between the different branches of the military force in the following manner: Army, 1 13, Navy 103, Marines 60, Aviation 44. It was impossible to learn the position of many of the men: but all reports indicate that, wherever they arc, they are doing their best for the sake of country and honor. Former teachers of Woodlawn who are now in the military forces, or in defense work, arc: Maj. John J. Martin, Capt. John Waller, Ensign Robert Ballard, Capt. It was thus retired permanently to Wood-lawn’s trophy case, as the ruling on retirement stated that the first school winning it three consecutive times would gain possession of it. The teams of 1939, 1940, 1941, and the boys from the squads of 1937 and 1938, even, arc due much credit for gaining possession of this beautiful cup. I think the cup is emblematic of more than the city championship. To me, it stands for teamwork, determination, hard work, courage, and many other of the qualities which these teams had to make them champions. — Malcolm Lanev, Coach. avnos” nvgiooj it SAfA ARTHUR CAPTAIN HOWARD WELDON ALT. But Coach Malcolm Lanry’ charge carne Through the season with eight victories and no defeat , cor mu 167 point to |S ior their opponent . The Colonel won the city and county championship and laid claim to the mythical Alabama state championship. The team i said by nun to be thr best in the lusiory of Woodlawn. Of course, that fact cannot he proved; hut the 1941 aggregation had power, cunning, and just about everything a championship team should have. The first team lineup had Sam McClurkin and Bryon Scott Chambliss at ends; Howard Weldon, Sam Arthur, and Ru eau Brechin at tackles; Maurice Wood and H. M. Smalley at guards; Thctmu McKinney at center; Oscar Cagle and Bill Rye at halfbacks; Leon Cochrane at quarterback and Doyle Ki . .ire at fullback. The team was ably tutored by Head Coach Malcolm Laney and Assistant Coach J. O. Simmon . It wa led by Captain Sam Arthur and Alternate Captain How ard Weldon. The champion Colonels placed five men on the first All-City team. They were Maurice Wood. H. M. Smaller, Howard Weldon. Leon Cochrane, and Oscar Cagle. Two of Wood-lawn’s stalwarts made the All-State: H. M. Smaller and Oscar Cagle. Cagle won another high honor -the All-Southern team Hr placcJ on practically all honor team thi year. The Colonels laid claim to the mythical Alabama State and Southern football champion ship by virtue of their unblemished record over outstanding schools of the South. WOODLAWN 13—RAMSAY 0 That score speaks for itself. The ColoneU opened the season with a brilliant exhibition of line pla backed by a fast moving hackfirld. Cagle and Kiz .ire scored the touchdown The victorious Colonel made 10 first down to one for their victims, the Ram . WOODLAWN 33—CITY HIGH 0 City High of Chattanooga visited Legion Field and returned home sad hut wiser. Their line just couldn't stop the Colonel . Cagle. Rye, Cochrane, and Buddy Hargett were responsible for the markers. Cagle scored two touchdowns. It was at this time that newspaper began to take notice of the Colonel . 'Phc championship fever wa getting spread all over Woodlawn High School. WOODLAWN 19—WEST END 0 Hooray! This was the game! The Colonels were uppo ed to have a tough time with the mating Lions of the We tsidc. However, the Lion were mere kitten to the boys from Wood-lawn. In winning this vital game, the Colonel clinched the city championship. They retired the Florsheim Tropin by being the first team to win it three times, and in succession at that. The Woodlawn squad, therefore, laid claim to the citv, county, state and Southern championship. WOODLAWN ( —PHILLIPS 0 In this, the hardest fought game of the season, the viciou Colonel showed their metal by repulv ing a desperate last minute goal thru t of the Phillips Red Raiders. Cagle played an outstand ing game at left-half tor the Gold . He scored Woodlawn’ vital touchdown. Arthur’, Woodlawn captain, played his final game in hi high school career; he wa 21 years old two days after the game. The first downs were 12 to 8 in favor of the victors. WOODLAWN 12—G. C. M. A. O. They played in the Jefferson County play-off against Hewitt and Jones Valley, losing to the latter. The team was composed of four returning letter men: Harry Summers, pitcher and out-fielder; Joe Sheppard, pitcher and out-fielder; Claude Kinney, 2nd base; and Raymond Sherrill, 3rd base; Gene Palmer, pitcher; J. F. Sharp and Ralph Isaacs, 1st base; Milford McCullough, short-stop; James Howard, left field; Oscar Cagle, center field; Richard Hahn, Ray Armstrong, and Jack Berry, substitutes. The team was more outstanding in pitching and fielding, but, had it been stronger in hitting, it might have come through with the county championship in addition to the city. Of this team only Sheppard, Palmer, Howard, and all of the substitutes named are returning for play during 1942. Promising among the new prospects for this year’s team are Jack Fox, catcher’r Warren Aderholt, 1st base; Malloy Wooten, 2nd base; Gordcn Pcttus, short stop; Joe Tucker, center field; and James Thomas and Bobby Ragsdale, outfielders. It looks lil c another pitching and fielding team, unless unexpected hitting power shows up. —Donald Batson. TRACK The 1941 squad was numerically small and had no outstanding performers, although the boys worked hard and showed definite improvement as the season progressed. All the dual meets were lost although Ensley and West End bested them by only the smallest of margin. In these meets the lack of numbers played a deciding role. In the state meet, Woodlawn placed 6th with seven points gained by Griffin who was 2nd in the 880, Hargett with 2nd in the discus and Rye who was 4th in the high jump. Letter men included, beside the above: Hopkins in the 440. Ceravolo in the low hurdles and broad jump, C. B. Gambrell in the high hurdles, Louis Aderholt in the mile, Ted Parker in the 880, and Hoyt Mabrv in the dashes.—Mr. Blane, coach TENNIS On the 1941 tennis team we had: Leslie Longhorc, No. 1 singles; Ed Robertson No. 2 singles; Murphey Baker No. 3 singles; Billy Boone and Balfour Thompson No. 1 doubles; and James Carr and Wayne Perry No. 2 doubles. The team tied with Phillips for second place, yielding the first place to Ramsay. On this year’s team we have: Ed Robertson No. 1 singles; V. J. Perry No. 2 singles; George Robertson No. 3 singles; Billy Boone and Balfour Thompson No. 1 doubles, and James Carr and Bill Peeples No. 2 doubles. As the ff'ootlloz goes to press, we have played only one game, winning that one 4 to 1 from West End. The team may not be championship caliber, but it looks good and we arc expecting the best.—Mr. Carter, sponsor WOOD LOG STAFF Mr. Gray, sponsor; Norma Johnson. Editor-in-chief; Lorraine Baker.
