Sport Review of 1939, a review is given of three sports: baseball, tenn;s and track. Due to the time of publication of The Wood-log,” a full account could not be given for these sports in the 1939 annual. TRACK REVIEW Woodlawn track team placed four men in the state track meet. This seemed good compared to the number of boys out for this sport. Members of the team who placed in the state meet were: Virgil Rawlinson, mile; John Davis, 880-yard; Tommy Geralds, pole vault; and Roy Fowler, shot-put and discuss. Roy raised the high school discuss record by several feet. TENNIS REVIEW Coach John Carter’s 1939 tennis team won the city and county tennis cup for the first time. Coach Carter started his tennis racquetccrs to work the early part of March and did not let them quit until they copped both championship cups. Boys who were presented with letters at the end of the ’39 season were: Paul Dahlke. David Buck, V. J. Perry, Roy Davidson, Howard Barksdale, Byron Erwin, and O. D. Cannon. Billy Barnes, received a manager's letter. BASEBALL REVIEW Here are a few of the highlights of baseball with the Woodlawn Colonels” for the 1939 season: The Colonels” were awarded the city and county Championship Cups. This was the second year in succession. Paul Lefty” Thompson was the gentleman who virtually pitched the Colonels” to the finals and the championship. Thompson won 8 games and lost 2. He struck out 72 of a possible 140. This is a record attained by very few of Woodlawn’s baseball pitchers. True to predictions, he is now with a major league ball club. Other outstanding players on the team were: Dick Pickle” Dill, catcher, Captain of the '40 baseball squad; Dan Sims, first base; Mickey Potter, second base, member of both championship baseball teams; Heinie Adcrholt, short stop, fast moving boy with two baseball letters to his credit; and Raymond Sherrill, third base, a sophomore, playing his first year. The outfield possessed such players as: Dan Tillery, William Chappelear, Grady Hemphill, and Paul Cranford. Bill Kallahcr, sub southpaw pitcher of last year, will take over pitching position left by Thompson. Only two regulars will return this vacr: Dick Dill and Raymond Sherrill. L. B. Goodwin, alter Captain of ’40 squad, will be ready for service. Other members of '39 team were lost by graduation. The ’40 team has big shoes to fill.. Letter earners for 1939 were: Dick Dill, Paul Thompson, Bill Kallaher, Dan Sims, Mickey Potter, Heinie Aderholt, Raymond Sherrill. L. B. Goodwin, Dan Tillery, William Chapplear, and Grady Hemphill. Joe Slaughter was manager. FOOTBALL When the end of the 1939 football season came, the Woodlawn team was declared city champions. This is the third football championship in the past four years to come Woodlawn’s way. This year’s team was under the capable guidance of Captain Bobby Long, a first class guard and a regular fellow. Joe Norrel, pass-snagging end, was alternate captain. The Colonels” came out of the battles with seven w:ns and one defeat. The defeat was at the hands of the strong Sidney Lanier Poets.” Sidney Lanier was ranked as one of the best teams in the state. All city teams were victims of Woodlawn's strong line and back field. Below is a summary of each game: WOODLAWN 6—RAMSAY 19 Because of an ineligible player, Woodlawn won its first contest with Ramsay. The Ramsay squad worked fast and furious and was rewarded with 19 points. Woodlawn made six points. Bobby Long played a bang up ball game. Three weeks later this game was forfeited. The Ramsay captain, Jack David, was declared ineligible. This automatically gave the game to Woodlawn. WOODLAWN 13—MALE HIGH 12 The Colonels” packed their togs and journeyed to Louisville, K , for their second game. They started with the first sound of the whistle and piled up 13 points. Male High took advantage of a wet field and rushed across two touchdowns in the last quarter, but failed to kick the extra points. Final score: Woodlawn 13, Male High 12. Bobby Long received a wrenched back, which hampered him the rest of the season. WOODLAWN 27—DORA 0 Woodlawn continued her smashing work by wallopine a far out-classed Dora clewn 27-0. The “Colonels” line held the “Bulldogs” the entire game. The final figures showed that Dora had not gained any yardage whatsoever, going through Woodlawn's line. Jerome Woods and Sam Arthur were in fine shape by making several nice tackles. Captain Bobby Long and Robert Black were not to be forgotten for their splendid work. Touchdowns were gathered by Hcinic Aderholt, James Sansing, and Jimmy Copper. Joe Norrell played good ball until his shoulder was hurt. He displayed fine courage in his work. WOODLAWN 19—ENSLEY 0 The Ensley “Yellow Jackets” felt the heavy blow of Woodlawn’s marching mach’ne for the second time since 1937, to the score of 19-0. Once the machine was started, it couldn't be stopped. Jones, Sansing, and Cooper scored the touchdowns. The touchdown drives were good for 31 30, and 45 yard. Herbert Bailey was outstanding in this game. He intercepted two passes and returned them for short gains. He also recovered several fumbles. WOODLAWN 0—SIDNEY LANIER 6 Sidney Lanier called on old Man Luck and he answered them by helping nip Woodlawn 6-0. Baring winds and what-have-you, it would have been an even battle. Although the Woodlawn boys were on their toes, everything seemed to go wrong. The only touchdown for “The Poets” was made by Donahue, right-half back, and a contender for an all-state position. He intercepted a pass on his own 36, eluded two tackles, and continued 64 yards for a touchdown. The “Colonels” moved to the “Poets” eight yard line in the fourth quarter, only to lose the ball on downs. L. A. Gilmer and Heinie Aderholt turned in impressive shows, while Joe Norrell was noticeable, dispite an injured shoulder. WOODLAWN 6—PHILLIPS 0 Woodlawn duplicated this show for the third straight year, by conquering the Phillip’s “Crimsons” 6-0. It was one of the hardest fought battles of the year. From start to finish it was nip and tuck. L. A. Glimcr took the situation into hand in the second quarter when he galloped 63 yards to the Phillips 2 yard marker. Jimmy Sansing took the ball over left guard for a touchdown. The Colonels” had Roy Johnson, Phillips’ midget quarterback, bottled-up. On almost all of his running plays, a Woodlawn player would smear him. Every man on the “Colonels’” team including some of the subs was playing like an all-American. Although everyone was outstanding, L. A. Gilmer should be given full credit for his brilliant 63 yards run. WOODLAWN 20— MOBILE 13 The “Colonels” headed south to the port city of Mobile and continued their winning streak by taking McGill Institute into camp by the count of 20-13. The “Colonels” started the first quarter in fine style and did not stop until thev had marched 53 yards to a touchdown. Capt. Bobby Long made the extra point by means of a terrific line smash. In the second quarter, Aderholt flipped an 18 yard pass to Norrell. who in turn took it on the run and stepped across the goal. It was really a hard one to catch. Black missed the extra point. In the opening minute of the fourth quarter, after an exchange of punts, Sansing slashed through left guard, eluded two would-be tacklers, and ran 35 yards, unhampered, across the McGill goal line. McGill then started to work and made two touchdowns before the game ended. Jimmy Sansing was the outstanding man in this game. Dan Tillery helped make this possible by his fine blocking. WOODLAWN 3—WEST END 0 The Woodlawn boys finished another championship season when they stopped the West End “L’ons,” 3-0. It was Long's 33 yard field goal that made the final decision in the wanning minutes of the game. During the first three quarters neither team could make progress. Things began to click in the fourth quarter. West End marched from her own 15 yard stripe to the “Colonels” 48 before Sam Arthur intercepted a pass. After two trys at the line, Woodlawn decided to kick. Jimmy Sansing got off a nice one from the 44. It hit on the 5 and bounced near the goal line. Guard Robert Black downed the ball almost on the goal line. West End kicked out of danger to her own 44. L. A. Glimcr, flashy “Colonel” ace, drove 18 yards in three plays with only three minutes of game-time remaining. “Mickey” Potter ran for six up to the 20. Gilmer again bucked the line for eight yards. When the two following line plays failed, Cap’t. Bobby Long was called on to kick a field goal. The time was now down to 70 seconds. The results: the ball split the up-rights in dead center. Had it not been for the strong “Colonels” line, this play would not have been possible. Captain Bobby Long again received the outstanding recognition. It was a thrilling finish for both the team and his high school football career. (Ed. Note—This correspondent predicted the field goal that won this game.) GIRLS AND GAMES MARY ELIZABETH CLAPPER The girls at Woodlawn have excellent chances to participate in the school athletics. The sports offered to the girls are divided into two classes, fall and spring sports. The fall sports include basketball, soccer, and fieldball; the spring sports include volleyball, softball, tennis, track, badminton, shuffleboard, and horseshoes. The most popular of these arc basketball, softball, volleyball, tennis, and badminton. These activities are practiced during the physical education classes; the intra-mural tournaments are held after school. The winning teams are declared the champions of the school. In addition to part cipating in the sports, the girls also enjoy taking part on entertainment programs, such as, the Christmas Music Festival, Gold and White Follies, Athletic Program, and their annual auditorium program. The g:rls are also interested in the dancing that is taught in the classes. These dances include tap, natural dancing, and correctives in dance form. By means of these dances poise, rhythm, and grace are acquired. The Girls Letter Club is composed of girls who have been awarded the physical education and Olympian Honor Society letters. It was ar-ganized by Miss Lucille Ewing, the physical education instructor, to encourage better health, to stimulate an interest in wholesome sports, and to serve the school as leaders in the field of recreation. Points arc given for participating in the various activities. When eight hundred points arc obtained, the girl is awarded a small letter; thus allowing her to become a member of the Girls Letter Club. The girls who were awarded lettters this year are: Lamay Attison, Stewart Blake. Betty Britton. Elizabeth Buettilcer, Alma Cutcliffe, Helen Cutcliffe,Elizabeth Davis, Carolyn Dllin, Gladys Donahoo, Joy Dooley. Dorothy Entrekin, Dorothy Gilbert. Dorothy Green, Margaret Hood, Lorenc Juneman. Fvelvn Lynch, Carol Matson. Mildred N'cal. Lucy Pearl Phillips. Dorothv Jean Sirles, Doris Sorrell. Margaret Wetzel, Margaret Whately, and lean Whaley. Membership in the Olympian Honor Societv is the highest honor to be obtained in the athletic field. After appointment to this society the girls serve a semester officiating during the intramural tournaments, assisting Miss Ewing w th the attendance and physical efficiency records, taking charge of the equipment, teaching some part of the regular lesson, and coaching the sports. For outstanding and loyal service the members are awarded large letters. Members of the society who have earned their service letters are: Elise Bloodworth. Betty Britton, Elizabeth Buettiker, Man Elizabeth Clapper, Doris Evans, Zelda Graves, Evelyn Howie. Jaunita Jolley, Bessie Jones, Ruth McCIesky, Frances Tucker, and Florene Wilkcy. Other members are: Stewart Blake, Alma Cutcliffe, Betty Frances Daniels, Carolyn Dillin, Mildred Nean, and Alice Sprunck. t SPORTS of 1940 by HOYT CARROLL —d BASKETBALL Colonels Have Successful Season The YVoodlawn “Colonels” basketball team turned in a good showing this past season. They have a total of 11 wins and four losses. This year the “Colonels” were runner-up in the city. P’aycrs who turned in good performance are: Captain Parker, Dill, Kallaher, Summers, and Goodwin. Other players who received letters are: Sherrill, Stewart, Sharp, McCullough, and Howard. Manager Marvin Battles received a letter also. A list of games and results follows: Woodlawn 45 Montevallo 21 Woodlawn 31 West End 23 Woodlawn 40 Ensley 23 Woodlawn 20 Phillips 38 Woodlawn 28 Murphy 23 Woodlawn 32 Ramsay 25 Woodlawn 35 B. B. TENNIS As school is cut one week short, this means fewer games to be in the Woodlog. This year YVoodlawn has only two regulars returning from last year. They are: Captain Roy Davidson and V. J. Perry. Coach John Carter states that the 1940 squad is somewhat weaker than the Champs of ’39. The team this year is made up mostly of new boys. Boys picked to defend the singles are: Roy Davidson. V. P. Perry and Leslie Longshore. In the doubles, they are: Charles Prince, Murphy Baker, John Street, and Ed. Robertson. Our team at following games present has participated in the Woodlawn 1 Ramsay 4 Woodlawn 2 Jeff. Co. 2 Woodlawn 2 Ensley 3 Woodlawn 4 Shades Cahaba 1 All boys will return next year except Roy Davidson. This makes next year's chances look much better, with more experienced players. TRACK On the cinder track, Coach John Blane has lots of new boys to work with. Captain Roy Fowler, the largest man in Woodlawn, says, “Throwing the discus isn't hard; it is just knowing how.” Fowler is expected to break his own state record this year, which will exceed the S. E. C. record. Besides throwing the discus well over a hundred and fifty feet, Roy can really push the shot. Pole vaulters, who arc still looking at Tommy Gerald’s record, arc Nat Hughes and Raymond Ramsey. Other excellent performers are: Parker, high hurdles; Parker, Daugherty, and R. Black, low hurdles; Fowler, high jump; Tombrello, broad jump; Fowler and Parker, discus and shot put; Parker and Lacey, 880-run; Rawlinson, Johns, Holland, Monroe, and Brooks, mile-run; Vernon, Czravello, Hallmark, and Tombrello, relay. Robert Sprunck is manager. BASEBALL The chances of being City and County Champions again this year are very hopeful. Captain Richard Dill, star catcher for the past three years, wants to be quoted as saying, ‘Til be in the Big Leagues soon.” This statement isn’t far from wrong, with the fine work Richard is doing behind the plate. With “Lefty” Paul Thompson now graduated, the mound duties fall to Bill Kallaher, Harry Summers, and Joe Sheppard. In the first two games, YVoodlawn defeated Leeds by a count of 11-6 and 12-3. Richard Dill, L. B. Goodwin and Raymond Sherrill turned in good performances. In the third game YVoodlawn defeated West End 1-0. Although the Colonels” went hitless, “Red” Kinney scored from third when Goodwin hit to the first baseman, who dropped the ball. In the fourth game the Colonels were handed their first defeat. Phillips came from behind with two homers to win 6-5. Dill was outstanding for the Colonels, hitting a triple and stealing home. Harry Summers and Joe Sheppard pitched. The ’40 team consists of Dill, catcher; Kalla-hcr, Summers, and Sheppard pitchers; infieldcrs. MeKenney, Bailey, Kinney, Goodwin, Sherrill, and Hearn; Cagle, Matherway, Edwards, and Smith. Roy Carroll is manager. FALL STUDENT BODY OFFICERS Zack Martin. President; Jack Nichols. Vice-President; Doris Peeples, Secretary; Charles Barrett, Head Marshal. GOING ASS'T SUPERINTENDENT AN INSTITUTION IS BUT THE LENGTHENED SHADOW OF ONE MAN JOHN HOWARD was first in a field which humanity itself considers first—the field of service. Revolted by the squalor and brutality of I-nglish jails, this plain British dissenter began a crusade of prison reform which is responsible for whatever improvement has been made in penal conditions anywhere in the modern world. From prisons this minister of mercy turned to hospitals, especially on the battlefields of Europe, and there he became the first in imminence among nurses and sanitarians. His monument was the first to be erected in St. Paul’s Cathedral and the epitaph it hears is a challenge to every boy and girl who passes through the portals of an institution reverently dedicated to his memory: . trod an open bill unfrequented path to ini mortality in the ardent and unintermitted exercise of Christian charity.
