(8 —---- sansinq Track MURRELL JOHNSON TRACK Wf had a fair number of boys out for track this season. Out of the number we had two champions returnin'!. Roy Fowler, state discus champion is expecting to break his record again this year. He weighs around 200 pounds and is 6’ 5”. He is really getting to be a nice size. Tommy “Trigger Geralds, state pole vault champ, has already past his record of last year by 2 inches. This sounds very good. Tommy wil probably raise the peg a couple more knots again this season. Other material that was promising during the first of the season was: In the short dash, 100 yards—John Davis, Robert Black, ‘‘Reggie Dorn, and Joe Tombrcllo. 440—John Davis, Glenn Morton, and Owens Alexander. One-half mile— Arthur Simmons, Billy Rye, Jack Morris, and Bob Beyer. One mile—Billy Green, Jack Knight, and Virgil Raw-linson. High hurdle Trigger Geralds and J. T. Parker. Low hurdles—“Trigger Geralds. Pole-vault — “Trigger' Geralds. High jump—J. T. Gillis, Roy Fowler. and Billy Rye. Broad jump—“Reggie Dorn, Owens Alexander, and Joe Trombrello. Discus—Roy Fowler and Jerome Woods. Shot—Roy Fowler and Jerome Woods. Relay—Davis, Dorn, Tombrcllo, and Black. In the first two meets of the season, Woodlawn beat Phillips, 63-50, and lost to West End 62-49. Basketball COLONELS HAVE SUCCESSFUL SEASON The Wood’awn Colonel’s basketball team turned in n m e showing this past season. They had a total of r'even wins and four loses. This gave us 73r of our games being victories. The Colone s have played in state finals for five years, but their chance slipped this year when they lost in the district tournament. They had also held top-notch on runner-ups position in the district tournament for the past five years. Players tu.ning in the best play who received letters are. Paul Thompson. J. '1 . Parker, Earl Baker. “Butch” Cranford, “Mickey Potter, and Joe Norrell. Other players who received letters are Billy Green. George Richey. William Chappelear, Dick “Pickle Dill, and “'Trigger Geralds, Hoyt Carroll, manager for the second consecutive time of the varsity basketball team, will also receive a letter. Tennis MURRELL JOHNSON TENNIS As we went to press only seven games had been played. This hampers our sports department because a record cannot he given for the full season. Here is the information that can be given. In the tennis tournament Paul Dahlke survived all of his rounds to come out on top. Other members who followed arc: David Buck, V. J. Perry, Howard Barksdale, Frank Jones, Roy Davidson, and O. D. Cannon. After the tournament was played, Mr. John Carter picked the tennis team. The boys were picked by their experience and their ability to play. Boys picked to defend single honors were: Paul Dahlke, David Buck and J. V. Perry. Boys working together in the doubles were: Howard Barksdale and Roy Davidson, O. D. Cannon and Byron Erwin. Frank Jones alternated with different ones of the double teams. Teams that have been victims so far this season are: Enslcy, Bessemer. Jefferson, Sylacauga, West End, Jones Valley, Ramsey, and Phillips. This seems very impressive. There will be several lettermen this year, because of the nice work they are turning in. m CHEERLEADING SQUAD Mr. Helms, Sponsor Capt. Baseball murrell johnson A general review of last year’s team will add a lot of pep for this year. The team of last year won the city and county championship. To win these championships the Colonels had to heat West P'nd in the City, and Mortimer Jordan in the County. When the end of the season rolled up, it was found that Woodlawn and West End were tied for first place. By special arrangement a double header was played with West End. The Colonels proceeded to take both games by a score of 7-0 and 9-1. Earl Baker pitched. Woodlawn then removed Shades Cahaba from the County race by the score of 3-2. In the final games the Mortimer Jordan '‘Blues” went down with very little struggle. This is quite an honor for our team. Members of last year’s squad were ‘‘Butch” Cranford, “Lefty” Thompson, “Flush” Sims, “Butterbean Tillery, Blackie” Roy King, Harry Aderholt, “Mickey” Potter, “Pickle” Dick Dill, L. B. Goodwin. Roy Rhodes, Billy Kallaher, Grady Hemphill, Mert Tucker, and James Tarrant. The chances of being city and county champions again this year are very hopeful. “Pickle” Dill, star catcher of last year, wants to be quoted as saying, “Other teams haven’t a chance against Woodlawn, while I am catchine.” By all means do not pass up this statement. “Pickle is expected to give a good account of himself this year. Earl Baker, pitcher of last year, could not return this year because he has already played three years of varsity baseball. “Lefty” Thompson will take over the head mound duties this year. In the first regular games, Woodlawn defeated ley 4-2. Ensley's two runs were made in the fifth in: Silver, Erisley out-fieldeo, slammed out a home rum one on. Only two hits were secured bv Enslev. Plr showing well for Woodlawn were: “Pickle” Dill, “Lr Thompson. Raymond Sherrill and “Flush” Sims. In the second game of the season. Woodlawn I the strong Ramsay “Rams” 7-1. Again “Lefty” Tfr son showed up well by only giving up three hits) striking out thirteen men. “Speck” Hemphill kno, himself a free trip around the bases. Other players who are expected to show well year are: Pitchers, “Butch” Cranford, Billy Kail Doc” Burdette, and Roy Rhodes; Infield, “Flush”j Sugar” Potter. “Budweiscr” Aderholt, L. B. Gooc and Rayomond Sherrill; Outfield, “Butterbean” Tt‘ “Spec” Hemphill, William Chappelcar, and Frank wards. In a practice game, a week before the regular started, the strong Howard “Bulldogs” nosed out team 2-1. In his five innings to pitch. Paul Thorn; star pitcher, gave up only one hit. Howard’s two I were made because of errors. By the way, you will hear more of “Lefty Th son later. Several important baseball scouts have lo him over. Looks like Woodlawn will be repress major baseball before long. T his seems to be all of the baseball news tha be given this year. A general review of the last of this season will be mentioned in the Woodlog” oil .year. ATHLETICS Along The Sidelines With Wilson Mauk FOOTBALL At the beginning of the 1938 season Coach Malcolm Laney’s Junior Colonels were the most highly tooted team in the city. All the local newspapers “played them up” and predicted that they would repeat as City- County Champions, or at least be one of the outstanding teams in the city. It is true that the Colonels had probably the heaviest team in the big five and a flashy back in James Tarrant. Contrary to all reports, however, the Colonels lost to Ramsay High in their first game and provided one of the biggest upsets of the season. After this Woodlawn seemed to go into a tailspin and met with mediocre success as far as games won and lost were concerned. When everything was over and the final count in, the Colonels had compiled a record of three won, four lost, and one tied. Alrhouch we don’t like to make excuses, we can’t help but go back and say that Woodlawn received more than their share of bad breaks during the 1938 season. They were handicapped bv injuries during most of the season and they lost a game by the margin of two touchdowns for the first time in four years. Three games were lost bv the margin of an extra point. Another game ended in a tie in which the Colonels outplayed their opponents. In the outstanding game of the season (The Ensley Game) a touchdown was called back and the Gold Clad Warriors again met defeat. This same incident happened two years in succession in games with Ensley. In both cases a long touchdown run was called back and, strange as it may seem, James Tarrant was the victim in each game having his run recalled because of a said infraction of the rules. In summing it up we would like to say that although in this season we received quite a few bad breaks, Woodlawn took it on the chin and came up smiling. Woodlawn had a much more successful season than games won and lost would indicate. In the following is a brief sumary of Woodlawn’s 1938 Football Games: Ramsay 25 — Woodlawn 24 In one of the wildest contests Woodlawn has plaved in many years the Colonels were the victims of a last minute touchdown pass. With less than 30 seconds left to play. Silverfield, Ram halfback, faded back and tossed a pass to Hewlett who galloped through the Woodlawn secondary for 35 yards to score. James Tarrant scored 3 touchdowns for the Colonels and Montgomery returned an intercepted pass 67 yards for a six-pointer. It was truly a case of luck and the Rams were on the long end of the score. Male High 7 — Woodlawn 6 After outplaying the Kentucky boys for three ters the Colonels were again the victims of a last min score and again an extra point spelled defeat for W lawn. A short 17 yard punt gave the Louisville boys-break they needed. Woodlawn 7 — Bessemer 6 Lady Luck smiled on the Colonels in this third gg of the season as they were outplayed all through the c: test. They were outgained both by land and air but remained steady in the clinches and w'ere on the longcj of a 7 to 6 score when the final gun sounded. Ltd Montgomery drop-kicked the extra point after Jac: Tarrant had bucked it over from the four yard stripe Ensley 12 — Woodlawn 6 For the past two years Woodlawn has had a 1« touchdown run nulified against Ensley. In both a' it meant the difference between victory and defeat. Woe lawn outplayed the Jackets and even in defeat the G oncls looked more like champions and a better balafloj team than did Ensley, and we arc not trying to take credit due a great Ensley team. Woodlawn 0 — Sidney Lanier 0 The Colonels were held to a scoreless deadlock inbi game played at Crampton Bowl in Montgomery. Tf whole game was rather loosely played and Woodlnj repeatedly made scoring threats but were unable to c talizc on any of them. The play of the Lanier line was outstanding feature of the game. They often smothca Woodlawn plays before they were started well. Woodlawn 7 — Phillips 0 Woodlawn fans always derive satisfaction from bfl ing Phillips High and this was a particulars gratifying it was the first intra-city win for the Colonels. Playingi a rain drenched field neither Woodlawn or Phillips cfli) get their attack to click. Leroy Montgomery made A[ only score of the game in a 23 yard dash and added at extra point with a drop-kick. Woodlawn drove to 1 Phillips 2 yard line on another occasion only to $«' fumble spoil their chance for a more decisive score, 'ft was the first time Woodlawn has ever beat Phillips t season on a straight and this added to the fruits of victol) Wood lawn 33 — Jefferson County 7 Jefferson County's Wildcats seemed rather tame as Woodlawn rolled up 33 points playing second and third stringers. The country boys were not fooled so much by the plan of attack, as they were overpowered by a bigger Colonel team. Joe Haley, Bobby Long, and James Tarrant were outstanding in this game. West End 13 — Woodlawn 0 This was the first game of the year in which a score was made that the Colonels did not score at least once. Woodlawn turned in their worst performance of the season in this game and a noticable lack of team work and cooperation gave the lighter but faster West siders the advantage they needed and the Colonels came out on the short end of the score. The Woodlawners playing rather raggedly, met a spirited West End eleven that made and took advantage of the breaks. This was the first time the Colonels had been defeated by more than one touchdown in more than four years. It was also the second time a West End team has won a game from Woodlawn in many years of football relations. The football season was climaxed by the annual banquet given to the players and friends. At a meeting before the banquet the letter men of 1938 elected Bobby Long and Joe Norrell captains for 1939. We, the seniors, hope to follow all the Woodlawn teams through the years, and may they have as much success as they have had during our high school days. GIRLS SPORTS The girls at Woodlawn arc very much interested in sports. The ones the girls participate in mostly are: Soft ball, Basketball, Volley ball, Tennis, Badminton, Shuffle-hoard and Track. The activities are played during physical education classes; .and inter-class tournaments are held after school. Teams show the most points in winning arc declared winners of the school. This is a distinct honor. The Girls Letter Club was organized by Miss Lucille Ewing, physical education instructor, to encourage better health and to create an interest in wholesome sports and recreation of all kinds. Points are given for participating in girls sports. When eight hundred points are obtained, the girl is awarded a physical education letter, thus enabling her to become a member of the Girls Letter Club. Girls awarded letters this year are: Evelyn Howie, Grace Wheeler, Mary Wood, Betty Frances Daniels, Frances Tucker, Florene Wilkey, Elaine Dill, Juanita Jolly, Alice Sprunk, Zelda Graves, Jean Whitehead, Annie Jo Duffey, Elsie Bloodworrh, Ruth McClcsky, Doris Evans, and Dotsie Evans. The highest honor to be obtained in the athletic field is membership in the Olympian Honor Society. After winning a physical education letter, the letter girls serve a year officiating during the inter-class tournaments, assisting Miss Ewing with attendance and physical efficiency records, taking charge of equipment, assisting students in class, teaching some part of the regular lesson, and assisting with coaching of girls sports. Girls earning Honor Society letters this year are: Edith Parrish, Irene Davis, Bessie Jones, Mary Elizabeth Clapper, Frances Tucker, Doris Evans, and Dotsie Evans. It is he hope of all in charge of our athletics that an increasing number of girls will take advantage of the opportunity to participate in these sports, both for enjoyment and also promote further interest in our girl sports. —Dotsie Evans marqaret lewis Secretary FALL STUDENT BODY OFFICERS Annice Watkins. This carefully worded motto reigns high over the mural frieze in VVoodlawn High School Auditorium. Worded and designed by Sidney W. J. VanSheck, it unfolds a powerful panorama of Youth’s strife in the approach to life’s problems. It is the largest and longest mural frieze in the entire South, covering fully 816 square fee:. It is painted on linen canvass and permanently placed upon the wall of the proscenium arch, it contains more than a score of nine foot heroic size figures and four super-heroic fourteen foot symbolic figures. The story is symbolically interpreted in allegorical panorama. The central section is the beginning of the Thought” or design. It divides the mural into two halves. The left half portrays two sections of Material Life and the right half two sections of Spiritual life. One section is the bad— Intolerance”—in both material and mental aspects and the far end sections portray the joys of Tolerance. ORIGIN—CENTRAL SECTION We see against the background of a World the central figures of a boy and a girl. Botn are facing the approach of Like with courage. The boy is in a pose of intelligent determination and the girl is at the threshold of womanhood. In the immediate neighborhood we see the symbolic portrayal of their Origin—the heart of an industrial city. It lacks beauty of surroundings as symbolized by the stump of a tree. High above is the Golden Dome of the City with the Mogul of the World’s Moving Power. The Material side of life presents the misguided glory of the golden side of Material Power.— fhc driving force of a Kolden chain •pinning MM . • • i the Globe. On the other side of the central figures there is a sweet dream of Magnolia Blooms with the symbol of Spiritual Knowledge. He offers the Lamp and the Book of Wisdom. The white streamer of Beauty now guides the course of the Globe. The Cause At left of the Golden Side of the World’s Moving Power a change is taking place. Gold is the Cause of many injustices. Gold is fading into the cold Steel of a Wheel of Industry with the sufferings of Child Labor and the heads of human derelicts, result of Industrial exploitation. A Stone Wall slowly rises step by step as a barrier The Strike Here is where a new spirit of building and economic reorganization enters. Two figures of Economic Rehabilitation—a boy and a girl are seen toiling in sweat but smiling—occupied in Agr cultural self-support. They are backed by all the technical developments such as, land terracing, bridges and city-planning, radio aviation beams, hydraulic power and speedy transportation of streamlined age. The new building spirit moves into the Ideal Democratic Government—man with open book— Labor and Science. Over the modern house is seen The Designer with Home Economics, the keystone of economic security. The wing ends with the symbolic figure of Security holding the House and Food. Intolerance At the right of the central section we have Intolerance. The short-comings of spiritual guidance wither the lovely magnolia blooms. Again a stone wall of misunderstanding arises and Freedom is represented by the prone figure—chained. Tolerance In contrast, the benevolent spirit of Tolerance with the Red Cross Flag intervenes to this section to protect the future generation. A peaceful note sounds through this part with the figures of the Arts shown in man with the pallctte. girl planting an arbor tree. Ornamental architecture and the stadium of an open theatre back up the figure of a Speaker with gavel in hand, head of a Prophet with the Ten Commandments, a singing girl with flowers symbolizing the joy of living. The section ends in a kneeling figure of a Teacher with a boox of curriculum. She is giving the finishing touches to a golden statue of the boy and the girl—the same boy and girl in the center section. The cycle is now complete—the better boy and girl are the result of schooling and will enter Life with improved possibilities of gu'ding the spiritual form of Tolerance. The super heroic figure ending the right wing holds a book high above the sentiment of the heart and so represents the peak of spiritual and intellectual tolerance and achievement. This dramatic stroy with all its foresight into Youth’s future life problems is the result of the artist's careful consideration and painstaking planning toward the ideal. It is dedicated to Youth as the artist’s ultimate contribution. The painting of the mural was done entirely by Mr. Richard Coe. The installing was done by Mr. William Grant and Mr. Coe with two assistants. The mural is a WPA project begun in 1935 and finished in 1938. f I act IX noble hendri o c _££L k-o-o-dSL CAJLK U.
