THOHAl ATHLETICS GIRLS ATHLETICS Every year tournaments among girls arc held under the direction of Miss Ewing, girls' athletic teacher. This year only two had hern held when the Woo it fog went to press. These were tournaments in volley ball and basketba'I. In the volley hall tournament, nine team participated. This tournament was won by the Gorilla , which was made up of brmltcrs of the Olympian Honor Society. The member of this team were: Virginia Karri . (Captain); Edith Parrish, Genevieve Cnpp?, Dorothy Diclcson, Dorothy Anne Rush. Dorothy Spivey, Mildred Taylor, Irene Davis, and Florrie Thompson. Runners-up in the contest were the Cub , who captain was Edna Jones. Other team participating were the Kangaroos , whose captain was Bessie Jones; the Lions , with Blanche Taylor as captain: the Ram ā€, led by captain Annie Ruth Hicks; the Tigersā€, captain being Wil ie Ruth De Loach; the Wildcat , Mary Calloway, captain; the ā€œPanthersā€, Jeanne Walter . captain; and the Bulldog , with Natoma McDougal a captain. The other tournament held was in basketball. This was won by the Colonels , whose members were seniors and juniors. The captain of the team was Eva Kincaid, and the other members were: Maxineā€Fargason, Pauline Mercer. Mar-ccne Wilson. Edith Pariish, Genevieve Capps. Dorothy Dickson. and Gladys May. There were three other teams. The name of the teams and captain were as fo lows: Sky-rockets , Bessie Jones; ā€˜ Bulldogs . Ruth McCIcsky; and' The Chick rn . Opal Whisenhunt. When the Wood log Went to pre s, the plans for a tournament in baseball were being made. There were to he eight team in the contest. FOOTBALL The Woodlnwn Junior Colonels went into their first game last fall as the underdog; but, when the season was over, they were again city and counts champions, although they had to share the honor with Ramsay Tech. The tram was one of the l c t ever produced at Wood awn by any coach. It was coached by Malcom Lancy and Doc Mason, and led by Captain William Squatā€ Giles. Only one game was lost out of eight hard struggle , that one going to E ns ley by the score of 6-2. There were four out-of-town games, two of these being out of the county. The latter were: Sidney Lanier of Montgomery and McGill Institute of Mobile. The following i a brief summary of the games played: Woodlawn 12 — Ramsay 0 In this opening game of the season, the Colonels proved to he much the superior team, conquering the Rams with ea e. Sharp received a pass from Roy King over the goal for the initial touchdown. King scored the second by circling left end late in the fourth quarter. The Ram only threat was a drive to the Woodlawn 10-yard stripe, but this drive was halted when Sharpe intercepted a pass. Woodlawn 13 — Bessemer 6 This game was played on a wet gridiron and Woodlawn was forced to rely chiefly on power plays. Sam Sharpe made a leaping catch of a pass from James Tarrant for the first touchdown. Captain Giles scored the second on an off-tackle play going over standing up. The lone Bessemer touchdown was scored on a pass. Woodlawn 13 — McGill $ The CouoncL chalked up their third straight win of the season by defeating McGi I Institute of Mobile, even though the latter presented a razzle-dazzle pa ing attack. Robert Dunbar and James Tarrant scored for Woodlawn. Woodlawn 2 — Enslcy 6 Woodlawn suffered their only defeat of the season in this game. ā€˜Flic Colonels scored in the first half, but the ba 1 was called back because thr backfield was in motion. En lcy scored late in the fourth quarter to overcome the Woodlawn lead of two points. Woodlawn 7 — Lanier 0 Woodlnwn tripped Sidney Lanier Poets of Montgomery in one of the harchr. t fought games of thr sc.T-.on. Captain Giles made the only score when he broke through the right guard and raced 29 yard behind perfect interference for the the one touchdown. Woodlawn 19 — Phillip 6 Woodlawn s Homecoming Day was celebrated with this game and a crowd of 12.000 saw Woodlawn break the jinx that Phillip has held over them for several years. The Colonel presented a fiery attack that baffled the Crimson most of the game. Giles scored two of Wood awn's touchdowns and passed to Tarrant for the other one. Woodlawn 52 — Jefcohi 7 The Jcfferton County Wildcats seemed rather tame a Roy King crossed the goal inc for three touchdown . Tarrant two, and Giles, Sharpe and Richard for one each. Coach Laney used substitutes freely in this game, frequently sending in a whole new team at a time. ATHLETICS Woodlawn 19 — West End 0 Woodlawn ended her season with t brilliant fight on an icy gridiron against a spirited West End team. Captain Giles again in this game scored two touchdowns and Tarrant one. BASKETBALL The Junior Colonels failed to defend successfully thenr 1937 State Basketball Championship. After going through a fairly bright season, under the coaching of Sir. Blanc, they dropped the final game of the District Meet to Mortimer Jordan. Their being in the finals, sent the Colonels to the State Meet at Tuscaloosa, in which the Colonels were defeated in their first game by Scottsboro, who went on to win the Championship. Members of the team were Roy King (Captain), Paul Thompsom, Robert Dunbar, Earl Baker, Paul Cranford, Herbert McCall, Bobby Long, Robert Norrell, Jerome Wood, Joe Norrell, Tommie Geralds, and Dewey Lackey. The Demons , Woodlawn's Y.M.C.A. team, won the State Championship at Selma, by defeating Berney Points, also of Birmingham, in the finals. On the roster of this team, which was coached by Lee Brown, history teacher, were L. B. Goodwin, James Sisson, S. A. Taylor, Bill Kallahon, Searcy Penucl, Owen Alexander (Captain), Jack Hartsfield, and Joe Dougherty, Manager. TENNIS The tennis team made a good showing this year, even with the loss of Eugene McCain, State Singles Champion of 1937. The team was paced this year by David Buck, with the able support of Leroy Montgomery and Curtis Walden. The other members of the team were Paul Dahlke, Roger Sullivan, O. D. Cannon, Byron Erwin, and John and Howard Barksdale. David Buck won the annual school tennis tournament, in which there were fifty-four entrant . The team and the tournament were held under the leadership of John L. Carter. Mr. Carter was re-elected to the presidency of the Jefferson County Prep Tennis League. This is the third time for Carter to head the League. CHEERLEADERS Mr Helms turned out a splendid group of cheerleaders for the 1937 football season. The members of the gir s team were: Ann Lutz, Billie Glenn Wilkerson, Margaret I ovrladv, and Charline Harrison. The boys’ team was graced by two important personages, Heustis Whiteside, fall president of the student body, and Davis Gammagc, drum major of the band. The other two members of the boys' team were: Elmer Rhodes and Carl Burris. BASEBALL Coach Laney had a hard time in order to produce the team he did this season. He was forced to rebuild the infield combination, with the exception of third base, the only position for which an experienced man returned. Woodlawn had a fair season winning about the same number of games that were dropped. The pitcher's box was filled expertly by Paul Thompson, Earl Baker, and Roy Rhodes. Other members of the team were Harry Aderholt, Lewis Burdette, Paul Cranford, Richard Dill, L. B. Goodwin, Grady Hemphill, Roy King, Earl Litt'ejohn Jack Lowery, Joe Norrell. Morris Potter, Dan Sims, James Tarrant, Dan Tillery-, and Meredith Tucker. Stationers For Your Senior Class Manufacturing Jeweler and Stationer L. G. BALFOUR COMPANY ATTLEBORO. MASS.
