Corresponding with the close of their third year as coaches of the School of Op- portunity came the close of the most successful football season for a VVoodlawn eleven in a decade. In the three years of the Laney administration there has been a noted increase in the season's percentage column for games won. This increase reached a climax last season when the Laneymen steam-rolled seven op- ponents in decisive fashion, but were tied by another, to win city, county, and state championships. In winning these titles, the Colonels rolled up 155 points while only 18 were being scored against them. This is an average of better than 19 points per game. Holding eight teams to a grand total of 18 points speaks for the enviable defensive record the Colonels established. VVoodlawn's chief offensive weapon was a flashy passing attack. Coach Laney was graced by a pair of great ends-Holt Rast and Sam Sharpe, and a pair of deadly passers in LeRoy DeRamus and Roy King. VVith this team of passers, receivers, and fast charging backs, no one was able to put the skids on the VVoodlawnites. Another rare honor came to the football team when two of the members were selected on the All-State team, and another member being placed on the second team. Captain Earl Fullilove and Holt Rast-tackle and end respectively-were placed on the first team. Sam Sharpe, another end, was placed on the second team. Here is a resume of the most successful football season for Hfoodlawn High School since 1926: XVOODLAWN 19 - BESSEMER 6 In this seasonls opener, the Colonels stamped themselves as a first class foot- ball team by defeating the Purple Tigers at their own stadium, McAdory Field. The Colonel:-1' running attack was at its best during this game, with Giles, Helm, and Tombrello ripping off sizable gains almost at will. XVOOIJLAWN 44 - MORTIMER JORDAN 0 The light Mortimer jordan team was no match for the superior power of the Laneymen. The Colonels scored in the first minute of play and were never stopped. XVooo1.AwN 20 - MURPHY or TMOBILE O The Colonels invaded the southern shores of the State and stamped the initial defeat on the record of the Million Dollar School's football team. The liolds featured a flashy air attack and a tight defense and as a result, left Mobile with their third win for the season and their second in as many years for the Colonels over the Black Panthers. NVOODLAVVN 19 - XVEST END 6 Holt Rast and Sam Sharpe were responsible for the three Vtloodlawn scores in the game with Coach YVeaver's Lions. The Colonels completely outplayed the Lions and the outcome was never in doubt after the second Gold score. VVOODLAWN 6 - SIDNEY l.ANIER 0 WOODLOG This contest, according to the VVoodlawn players, was the hardest of the season. The Poets displayed a powerful offense and a defense that compares favorably with the best. Only after a bruising and a hard fought game did the Colonels emerge victorious. XVOODLAWN 33 - JEFFERSON COUNTY O The XYildcats from Jefferson County High held the Colonels to only one counter in the first half, but fell before the powerful Gold offense in the second half that netted the victors four touchdowns. XKVOODLAWN 0 - PHILLIPS 0 Phillips continued to hold the jinx against lVood1aw1I by holding the highly rated Golds to a scoreless draw. VVoodlawn experienced a decided let-down of- fensively in this game, and as a result, the punch that produces scores was missing. XVOODLAWN 12 - ENSLEY 6 The Junior Colonels completed their season with a victory over Buddy De YaInpert's Yellow jackets . This was the first VVoodlawn victory over Ensley since 1926, and gave them authority to claim tlIe city, county, and state champion- ships. Twenty-three players and one manager received letters. They include: Henry NVhitehead, David NVolfe, Charles Osborne. Earl Fullilove, Cabe Norris, Holt Rast, Sam Sharpe, Sam Tombrello, LeRoy DeRamus, VVilliam Giles, james Helm, jack Barry, Harold LaIIey, jack McKewen, George Vann, Tommy Biggs, Herbert Hughes, Henry Nixon, Robert Dunbar, james Tarrant, Roy King, A. -I. Smith, and XVillard Strickland. jack XVindham, Manager, also earned a letter. -ERNEST DAVIDSON Track N XVoodlawn High School's track team, under the capable guidance of Coach .Iohn Blanc, completed a highly successful season on the cinder paths last spring, finishing fourth in the State meet. Outstanding participants on the team were: Earl Fullilove, Claude Hughes, Leroy Hardin, VVilliam Califf, James Helm, and G. VV. Sawyer. All of these have been awarded the school track letter. Coach Blane hopes to keep up this standard during the coming season though only one letterman, XYilliam Calif f , is returning to the team. However, there will be some very promising recruits from last year including George jackson, Ben Linder, Joe Tyus, Clarence Grogan, Charles Osborne, and Lofton Smith. -VIRGINIA VAN DER VEER Tennis 5 Both the boys' and the girls' tennis tournaments, played in the spring of 1936, drew an unusually large number of participants. The tournaments were held under the sponsorship of Mr. john Carter. Most of the matches were played on the XVillowood Courts, which were the center of attraction for all tennis enthusiasts during the months of April and May. The winner of the girls' tournament was Margaret Thompson and the runner-up, Virginia Van der Veer. The boys' champion aIId runner-up were Eugene McCain and Lynn VVilliams. -VIRGINIA VAN DER VEER WOGDLQG STATIC CHAN PIONS Lrfl fn Vlljlflff lJi'xn.ut, Couu Ihnxxu, llxlcm. times, Sn un-ia, li.X'l l'I.liS, liixu, :Xll'C.XI.I.. Coach lilane should be given much praise for his splendid work in developing a team that had lost two lettermen the season before. There were two main teams this year: the A team which composed the first ten men, and the li team which played in the Y.lXl.C.A. league. The Colonels won twenty-three and lost only one game the complete season. Their only defeat came from Piedmont in an overtime period. Hut playing on their home court they won over this foe by a greater count than they were defeated. In the games that they played in the regular season, they scored a total of 500 points even while their opponents scored only 238. Sam Sharp was captain of the team and also led in scoring with 107 for the playing season. This was Sam's second year to play and he will be back next year. He was chosen on the All-State team. Roy King was the next highest scorer, and after playing at guard a year, was changed over to forward. Roy was placed on the All-District squad and made the second team of the All-State pick. Next in line came Salem Richey. Ile will be the only regular that will be lost next year. lie was a very valuable man, being one of the best defensive players. Earl Baker made the squad in his freshman year and will see service for the next two. He held down one of the guard positions. Robert Dunbar was the other player that made up the squad. lie was a guard and played a very successful year. 937'l WOODLOG William Giles played last year and made a letter but was not on the first team this season. Eugene Gurley alternated with Baker and Dunbar and saw service in almost every game. Herbert MCC all was moved to center to fill Sharp's place when be was called upon. Robert Norrell and Dewey Lackey were on the B team most all year but went to the District Tournament and were given letters. After winning the District Tournament, the team was entitled to enter the State meet at Tuscaloosa. Here they won every game and their second State championship. The Crash 5 The boy crumpled the papers before him in a tense, savage grasp and let his head fall dejectedly back into his arms. He could go no further. He could fight no longer. Soon it would be too late. The small lamp above his littered table flickered, casting weird shadows over the walls as the hands of the mantel clock crept steadily toward the hour of mid- night. Again he raised his head. He must do something! He must think! Tomorrow it would be too late. He pulled a piece of paper toward him, letting his chewed pencil move at random across its surface as he stared tragically ahead, lost in thought and despair. Halfway rising from the chair, opening his eyes wide and then closing them tightly again, he thought desperately. Why had it been his lot to suffer so from these inevitable elements-created by man, yes-but grown to be elements. Why? But it was also his lot to fight them bravely-his duty. Think! That was the only thing that could save him. He glanced back over his life, scanning briefly each item he could remember that might do. Think! VVhat had he done that was overlooked? There must have been something. Think! Think! Rising quickly, with emotion, he sent his chair tumbling backward with a loud crash, interrupting the stillness. The crash, fall .... why, of course! That was it! Light had dawned over despair. The time he fell down the back stairs-that was the remaining thing in his life that had not been written on. Oh, glory! He had conquered it again for this month! Theme-writing-the man-made, inevitable element. -MARION RIDDLE EXAMS lVorry, worry, slzizfering, shaking Thinking of the grades 'wire making Trembling af the thought of failing, fumbled reasons, ideas sailing, Stumbling on the road of passing, Dales of kings and theories clashing, Tis the time of dread and quaking 'Tis f'.I.'G11lS that we are taking. -HOBIER CURTIS WOODLOG Lover's Lanes City streets you find are often quite congested Bat ll oodlawn's halls at eight-fifteen with students are infested 1 have seen some ideal lowers-lanes that offered quite a break, Hat l'Voodlawn's lzalls at eight-fifteen really take the eake.
