Published by Senior Classes 1934- 35 Woodlawn High School Birmingham, Alabama —■ WOODLOG ■ Dedication For his sympathy with and his understanding of undergraduates; for his loyal cooperation in every matter pertaining to the spirit and progress of Woodlawn High School and her student activities; and because he takes his time from other work that might be more beneficial to him, to assist in editing the school publications, one of which has not been published for some time; because, in the depth of his friendliness, he is more than a teacher we dedicate this issue of The Wood log to M. P. Gray. ft I 111 ■ ■ WCCCLCt ■ Foreword This, the eighth issue of The Wood log, is the pictorial review of our four years’ stay at Woodlawn High School. It includes a list of our honors, our organizations, and our activities. We present it to the undergraduates who have made our stay in Woodlawn so profitable and pleasant. May their stay be as enjoyable as ours has been. The Staff and Seniors of 1935 1935 ■ WCCDIC6 ■ N. B. HENDRIX The faith and courage of the Seniors of 1935 have brought to rebirth this Woodlog. By the sacrifices of the members of the class there has again come into being the means of preserving the memories of days at Woodlawn High School. May the annual keep alive for all time the memories of glorious victories and happy friendships. May these memories be a stimulus to high endeavor and right living for all time. N. B. The Colonels won one game, tied another, and dropped six for a total of eight games played this past season. In eight games the Colonel’s opponents ran up 179 points against 62 scored by the Golds. The season also found the Colonels with two new coaches. Coach Laney filled the capacity as head coach of Woodlawn's forces assisted by Coach Albert Mason and Athletic Director Blane. Laney instructed the linemen. Mason the backficld men while Coach Blane handled the “Scalybarks.” Laney and Mason, the newcomers, proved to be very popular with the student body as Mr. Blane has been for years. Below is a brief resume of the season. WOODLAWN 9 DORA 7 The Colonels were pushed hard to win this one. Dora sent one of its strongest teams on the field, but the Colonels succeeded in stamping another defeat on the record of the Bulldogs. WOODLAWN 0 RAMSAY 14 The Colonels set up a stubborn defense against the Ram’s powerful running attack and held them to two touchdowns. Ramsay went through the season with their slate unblemished by defeat, winning city and county titles. WOODLAWN 13 LANETT 13 Although Coach Laney's crew of Golds were forced to fight an uphill battle throughout the game, they knotted the score with Lanett who went through the season undefeated. The Colonels played probably their best game of the season against the Black Panthers from South Alabama. WOODLAWN 7 WEST END 3(5 West End displayed a heavy team capable of giving any high school team a scrappy battle. The Colonels never let up although the Lions were running up a large score. WOODLAWN 6 SIDNEY LANIER 25 With the score at half time six all. Lanier came back in the second half to hit her stride scoring 19 points. The Poet’s heavy foreward wall was loo much for the Colonel’s lighter line and constant battering found the Golds in a bad spot in the last period. WOODLAWN 27 JEFFERSON COUNTY 32 This was one of the most thrilling games seen in a long time. The Wildcats were three touchdowns ahead of Woodlawn late in the third quarter, but the Colonels pulled up one point ahead of Jeflfcohi. A pass broke the monotony of the fourth quarter on the last play of the game to chinch the game for Jefferson. WOODLAWN 0 PHILLIPS 13 Phillips defeated the Colonels before a large homecoming crowd for their second straight victory over Woodlawn. The Gold’s forward wall offered stiff opposition, but the Crimsons scored in spite of their efforts. WOODLAWN 0 ENSLEY 38 The Yellow Jackets stung the Colonels six times in one afternoon and kicked two |x ints after touchdowns to produce the highest score against the Colonels this past season. This article would not be complete without mentioning the support given the football team by the students. The students attended every game in a big way and over 200 athletic books were sold indicating a successful year financially in spite of a losing team. ERNEST DAVIDSON Fifty-six W. H. Because The Woodlog must go to press before the new baseball season opens, we can tell only of the prospects for 1935 and give a description of the lettermen who are returning and their probable positions. On first there will be Sam Sharpe, a three-letter man in baseball, football, and basket ball, capably filling the shoes of Tom Eager. On second there will be a rather big squabble between Wallace Smartt and Bobbie Lloyd. Arthur Ellis, a two-letter man in track and baseball, will be the best bet for short stop. Art is a fine hitter, a good fielder, and an excellent base runner. On third we will likely lind Pete Haines and Jack Campbell struggling to regain the hot corner. Both are lettermen and Jack will be serving his third season, and Pete his second. On the mound Woodlawn loses two of her best pitchers by graduation. “Pine Tree” Parsons and “Nig Vance. We all remember Pine’s no-hit game in Tuscumbia and Nig as the little lefthander that struck out ten batters in succession and fourteen in the whole game against Shades Cahaba. Burt and Tucker will be the leaders for the backstop position. Burt and fucker being lettermen. In the outfield, we will have four lettermen: Leo Love. Dan Murnane. Leroy Patterson, and Gooch. Love and Murnane will be serving their third season with the Colonels. Gooch and Patterson their second. Leo is a two-letter man in football and baseball. Murnane received his track and baseball letters at Ben Blewett High School (St. Louis) before coming to Woodlawn. Patterson will be the main stay for left field with Murnane at center and Love in the right field. With our coach of the past season coaching baseball at Southeastern, we will accept the clever coaching of “Doc” Mason and Malcolm Laney. Both won their letters at college. Doc is a four-letter man in football, baseball, basket ball, and soccer, and he ran a good race in track at Temple. Laney is a three-letter man in baseball, basket ball, and track at Alabama. Hail, the 1935 season! DAN MURNANE Tennis Woodlawn High’s tennis team ran true to form again last year as the racqueteers ran their winning streak to three consecutive championships. Captain Ed. Alley, who has been undefeated in league play for the last three seasons, featured the district and state tournaments. Ed. won the state singles championship and was the main stay in all league games. Almost as outstanding was the stellar play of Cecil Pelham and James Posey not to mention contests played by Charles Hamrick and Gordon I larriston. Under the able guidance of Coach Carter these five compiled victories from West End. Phillips. Ensley. Ramsay, and won District and State Championships. Ed. Alley of Woodlawn won the states Junior Championship and played well in Cotton States Tournament. Lettermen include: Ed. Alley No. 1. Cecil Pelham No. 2. James Posey No. 3. Gordon Harriston No. 4. Girls’ Physical Education Work The girls’ physical education class work includes athletics, games (mass and team , natural gymnastics, rhythmic work, posture tests, corrective exercises, and medical examinations. The class organization affords a splendid opportunity for training in leadership, scholarship, and sportsmanship which are encouraged at all times. Points are given for the various activities offered during class and after school work. School emblems are awarded to pupils earning 800 points. After a girl has earned her emblem by getting 800 points, she is eligible for the Physical Education Honor Society, provided she has four semesters of physical education to her credit with an average of 85 or above for the four semesters. She must have passes in all majors for two consecutive semesters and must continue to pass while a member of the society. One semester of service is required after being appointed to the society. If this service is satisfactory, the girl is awarded a school letter. Character, leadership, scholarship and service are emphasized iti the Physical Education Honor Society. Since Woodlawn High does not have girls’ varsity teams, a great deal of interest is taken in the girls interclass tournaments. These are held each season with basket ball taking the spotlight in the Fall, soccer in Winter, and baseball, volleyball, tennis, and horseshoes in the Spring. Any girl in Woodlawn High is eligible for these teams. Points toward the school emblem are given for practice as well as for making a team. The Girls’ Athletic Club is another organization sponsored by the physical education department. The purpose of the G. A. C. is to encourage better health, to create an interest in wholesome sports and recreation of all kinds. The club presents monograms to worthy members who can earn a required number of points through participation in the various club activities. Programs consist of games, contests, ability programs, treasure hunts, socials, outings, and talks on health and recreational subjects. North bound Floridians started the fad. and it proved to be as contagious as measles in a kindergarten classroom. The stay-at-homes, when alongside a sun-tanned coed, looked like good prospects for a slab in the morgue. Their pale, chalky and sallow complexions suggest a one-way trip to Mayo Brothers, the Minnesota jigsaw specialists. The big idea was to acquire the mulatto shade evenly. Like riches, it can not be gained in a day. Last Summer one of our most popular debutants fell asleep on the beach and did a perfect job, but only on her left side, so she had to start all over. Another vacationer slept on his tummy in a bathing suit and they had to remove same with a pair of scissors. Doctors say to take it gradually. Too much of Old Sol is more than enough. Milady’s ensemble for 1934, being brief at both ends, called for Suntan a loudly as a baby for its bottle. Instead of the broiled, live-lobster appearance, favor swung to the rusty tone of the internationally famous hot-dog not the mustard shade, but the sizzly tint of the dog itself. Someone once said. Women get the most out of their clothes.” Well, if it's anatomy they refer to, they are right. Most everyone has noticed that the 1931 bathing suits have been slashed in every way but price. Consequently. many a mole or vertebrae that had never seen the light of dav got several peeks at the world before Labor Day. Many an old maid got her first thrill when her bathing suit hugged her so tightly. It was reported that three lifeguards at Daytona didn’t call for their pay all summer, saying, It’s a shame to take the money.” That’s what the Suntan craze has done for us moderns. We term the outer covering of an animal the hide,” but on a man it is certainly in plain view. Suntan is like a cheap fur coat it's bound to come off. But like getting through high school, it takes longer for some than for others. If one finds that he must tan himself overnight, enough iodine to fill a bathtub is only seventy-nine fifty. This getting bronzed is like voting— nobody can do it for you, and you are dreadfully out of style if you don’t resemble a cigar store Indian. Mother Eve had the most perfect Suntan procurable, but in those good old days the beaches were on a different wave length and Eve didn’t have to drive for hours in a traffic congested thoroughfare to get herself out of the shadow of the skyscrapers. Suntan today is as necessary as a good memory during an English exam.
