Alabama I oreitonl As this, the (sixth) cross-section of the Woodlog, is sent forth members of the crew who cut it hope that it will prove sound and well-seasoned, and throughout the years will retain the freshness of newly hewn timber. With this school year another ring has been added to the rounds of growth by which one may trace his years in high school. The crew trusts that ingrained in it are friendship, pleasure, and achievement. happy memories of moments spent at Wood lawn. Ilenrfrit The shouting and the tumult of 1930-1931 dies away. Father Time carries us on in his relentless but thrilling march into an unknown land. With our good Woodlog in hand we do not fear the loss of memories now prized and held dear, comradeship’s joy and victory’s exultation are preserved for us in a record of picture and story. ................................... We pause on the journey of life; there is a moment’s rest. Again our friends live with us and again we tread the heights of the joys and friend-snips of a year well spent. — N. 13. V COACH HOUSER (Assistant Coach) “Mike” made his first attempt at coaching in Woodlawn, and he proved to be a great success. He hails from the University of Florida, where he played four years as guard and center. “Mike has a sparkling personality and his presence will boost interest in all athletics here. COACH BLANE (Director of Athletics) During the five years of coaching at Woodlawn Mr. Blane has done exceptionally well with his material and has turned out many good teams in football and basketball. He has had the fullest cooperation possible with the boys in all sports and this has been proven by the fact that his teams have “brought home the bacon.” in basketball, by winning the State Championship in 1927: the City Football Championship in 1926: and has done much toward the receiving of the Sportsmanship Cup which we have had several times. JIMMIE DUN ION (Manager) Jimmie took care of the managerial duties capably. He carried a smile wherever he went and the team reaped beneficient results from his manner of business. It is hoped that we leave more like him. ROBERT LEE THOMPSON (Back) Stumpy’s” initial year was filled with versatile running and spectacular exhibitions of broken field running. His presence on the team meant yardages. ALFRED BIVINS (Back) Little Man” was the smallest man on the team but his courage made him a giant. He was an outstanding tackier and blocker. SAM McCROSKEY (Back) Hong Kong was an excellent pass snagger and a hard man to get off his feet. He was a consistent punter. JAMES THOMPSON (Back) Monop” was good on both the offense and defense. On the offense he was a plunging demon and starred defensively while backing up the line. H is punting was with the best in the state. JEFF POWELL {End) Lockjaw was a consistent player backed up with brains and experience. This was his last year and he made it his best. J.G. SPRATLING (Tackle) Fat proved to be a stellar linesman and a stumbling block to all ball carriers. This was his first year, and he showed speed and power. ROBERT WRIGHT {End) This lithe youth was a tar bucket for any passer. Sleepy was down under the punts as fast as the ball. MORGAN GILLESPIE (Center) Gip was a good pivot man and was always in the thick of the fight. He was a man who was always willing and a good worker. FRANK HUGHES {Tackle) Big Hughes” was a powerful linesman and showed up well. He played his first year and was one of the best that we had. PERRIN CRANFORD (Guard) Tubby played four years and he was shown to be a steady worker. He and brother Lennie” were a combination respected in local prep circles. JOE HYNDS (End) Tuffy” was a good wingman in his ability to snag passes and to get under punts. He was on the All-State selection for end. EVERETT McALLISTER (Tackle) Star’s ability to scamper down under punts and rush over and block them leaves the impression of a smaller Freddie Sington. GEORGE STRANGE {Tackle) This was O-Dub’s first year and he played his position well. His power and speed were an asset to the team. BILL HARBUCK (Back) Whis passes a la Bobby Dodd and how. He is a cool headed quarter and a good broken field runner. CHARLES LAWRENCE (Back) This human racehorse is known in local prep circles as the “T. D. Kid. Along with his superior speed he is an excellent blocker. LEON CRANFORD (Guard) Lennie , weighing only 150 pounds, was to lx? seen all over the field and in every play. He is one of the best linesmen to be turned out by the Colonels. HOWARD SAVAGE (Back) This was Dago’s second year and he was a smart runner and blocker. He has two more years, and much is expected of him in the future. HARVEY PIERCE (Center) Slim , the lanky boy, took care of all of the duties of a center in fine style. This was his first year out and much is expected of him in the future. Ill Prep I « !««■« IKa kol IK«fcll I e«mi First Team Kontos Belcher Stapp W rjght McCroskey School Position Phillips L. F. All of them give interesting programs each week at the regular meetings. To belong to a club gives one the secure feeling that there is something to do 3nd that one is not left out of things. To many their club means much more than some of their classes. One can always depend on the vice-president of the club to have a good program for his interest. The clubs do not have only programs, but they give socials to the members quite often. The clubs are the best way to spend a dry auditorium period each Friday. The students are in the habit of going to a club in order to meet his friends. It is true that the clubs are promoting the general air of school spirit that they set out to do. Howsomever. them that has one knows what one is. This essay is for them that hasn’t one. A parrot is a bird about the size of a chicken, only not quite half so big. It has yellow, green, and red plummage and a long tail. I mean, it’s got a long tail if you haven't got a cat which likes parrots for eating purposes which all cats does. When you buy a parrot be sure you don’t get a parrokeet. which is only vest pocket editions of parrots. Find out from the store’ keeper what to feed him. If he don’t know, he hasn't been feeding him and you got to watch that parrot or he’ll eat your finger. Most folks thinks a parrot only eats crackers, which ain't so cause parrots eat anything from ice cream to street car hand straps. Depending on vour tastes, you can get a parrot that talks dignified or with profanity. If you are deaf, get one that don’t talk, cause it’s cheaper, and you want notice any difference. If your parrot don't talk, and you want it to. you got to teach it. The regulation kindergarten lesson is Polly wants a cracker. A parrot is not got much brains. He can’t learn fast, and most folks get disgusted by the time their parrot learns the above. So most parrot's entire eddgcation is them few words, and them not said plain. But first you got to name it. Most people call their parrot Polly’’ wether its a he. a she. or a it. This is a pretty good name because visitors always say Polly even if it’s name is Nebechad-nezzar, which don't sound nothin’ like Polly. Now what is it’s devanced eddycation? If you are a bachelor and ladies don’t live next door you don't need to worry what he says. Howsomever. if you got a Aunt Hester, this parrot better stick to courtesy. It is surprising how many fortunes are lost because folks let Polly cuss. Aunt Hester is got loads of jack, so she gets the glad hand when site comes to visit. Polly tries to be sociable and hollers Howdy, lobster right hearty. Aunt Hester gets mad as a wet hen. and somebody gral s the cage and pulls a hasty exit. On the way out. Polly sings out — Where the H ... is my pants? or says a couple remarks about somebodys future life. So you lose out when the old crab kicks the bucket. Sometimes folks buys theirselves a parrot and don’t get a cover fer the cage at night. Then friend wife sends hubby downstairs with a 45 colt to get the burglar, which is only Polly stewin' account her cage ain’t covered. Parrots kin make a noise like pullin’ a rusty spike outen a pine plank. Polly says this noise to attract hubby's attention when his back is turned. He shoots 13 keys offen the piano and busts a imported chink jug. account he's startled. Also he skims his ankle on the doorknob on the way to wife and safety. So get you a cover. Some guys claim they learned their parrot to sing. I have tried it mvself. and ain’t got much success. Parrots kin sing a little bit. but you can’t get ’em to warble frock of Ages or Yankee Doodle cause they voice ain’t religious, and they sure can't carry no tune. Besides they ain’t got no sense of popriety. They is liable to forget a coupla lines, and fill in with slang or cuss words, and the minister won’t like it. Some folks has the trouble of their parrot biting. If feedin’ him don't do no good, he will sure as tootin’ snip the finger offen some brainless gink who tries to pet him. Parrots is quick, and it is surprisin how hard it is to get your hand back out between them bars. So keep yer thumb out— Polly thinks its a cracker. Some old ladv might want the parrot to lay eggs fer breakfast, she is goin’ to be disappointed, account parrots'don't contrack the cackle-dropping habit. Most turtle soup has never seen a turtle. Turtles used for soup are of many and varied kinds. Some have spots: others leave their spots on sour vest. Except for the name, they have nothing in common. You may hear of the Fat Fraternity of Frogs, but never of the Twittering Turtle Troopers. Again I say once more that turtles have nothing in common. They don’t even taste common. New York turtles, if they have any taste at all. have the flavor of a petrified disenfectant. Country Club turtles have the identical taste of chicken. Turtles which grace the soup in Italian Grub-Grabbers are the grey alley' kind, and sa ' Meow. Me-e-e-ow.” Mostly turtles are assassinated before they are made soup of. The only exception to this custom was eaten by myself at Push-my-ta-ha. Alabama, on my last visit to the Disjointed States. The head waiter was called to feed me. in the absence of any subordinates, and he asked what I might crave, tomato soup and bread or bread and tomato soup? I recollected as how a tomato was not what it used to he. and insinuated I would just as sooner have turtle soup instead. Without flickering an eyebrow he went out atxl returned with a bowl which he set down facing me. Noting the rosy coloring of the liquid, surveying and suspecting the otherwise healthy condition of the blushing broth. I argued my doubts as to how it was counterfeit. Contradicting my denial, with a triumphant forefinger he pointed out a living proof cf the authenticity of the soup swimming about on the sunset waters. It. I say. is the only living exception to the rule I have eaten. The aforementioned experience of the above said goes to prove that all turtles may not necessarily turn soup, but that all soup can turn turtle. Yours till it thunders.
