We all promised to endeavor to make this year the most outstanding and memorable of all our years. We were very earnest in trying to preserve our dignity, although at some intervals we almost lost complete control of it. During the year we were kept very busy planning and giving card parties and dances. Due to the wonderful cooperation of our principal and the support of the citizens of Woodlawn all of our parties proved very successful. The candy that we had sold throughout the year aided greatly in increasing our finances. During the senior year we attended many school dances and enjoyed ourselves immensely at every dance. Soon after the Christmas holidays we expressed to Mr. Beam our desire to start our senior play. With his consent we immediately sent for books. The characters were selected and then the endless training began. Our efforts were not futile, however, for our dramatization was a great success. Soon after the play was given, we began our incessant planning for the trip to Washington. Before we had time to realize the coming date, it occurred to us that we had but a week left in which to get prepared. We finally succeeded in packing and the morning for our departure came at last. The details of the trip will be given by some other member of the class. The Washington trip is one event for which all future seniors will certainly look forward to with great expectations. It is one trip which will never be forgotten. I warn the seniors of next year to preserve their dignity while they are on this trip. For if you do not your picture will be sure to be snapped by Mr. Beam and then placed on exhibition as ours were. L2 Glass Song There are schools that make us loyal, There are schools that make us true. Qrganization It is a matter of common observation that the value of organized action surpasses that of individual action. Mr. Beam, as principal of Woodlawn High School, has not failed to make the student body realize this fact. Therefore, we have succeeded in organizing various clubs such as the De- bating Club, presided over by Mr. Beam, and the Science Club presided over by Mr. Gugino. The Debating Club has held several meetings and has discussed the leading topics of the day. One important subject which aroused a great deal of interest was Disarmament Much enthusiasm was displayed by both the negative and the affirmative side. The keen interest shown in this club by the student body leads us to expect even a larger and more active group next year. The Science Club has been exerting every effort to increase the interest in Natural and Physical science. At the November meeting, Mr. Beam gave a very instructive talk on The Life of Thomas Edison. At this time Mr. Beam also presented the club with a book concerning the achievements of Thomas Edison. We are indebted to the Science Club for an Edison program which was given in Assembly. Another important feature was the securing of a representative from the Buffalo Evening News, for the purpose of en- lightening us about the Byrd Expedition. This lecture proved most bene- flcial to the whole student body. We certainly hope, that, in the future, more organizations such as these clubs will develop and function, with untold benefit to the students of Wood- lawn School. Qs jk jx E201 girls, glee cruz, The Girls' Glee Club organized under the leadership of the music in- structor, Miss Fiske, has made decided progress in its first year at part singing. Enthusiasm has been high throughout the year's rehearsals and many interesting chorus numbers have been studied as a result. At present, the girls' glee club has a membership of twenty-two voices selected from the intermediate and high school departments. This club has presented the following programs throughout the year: November 12, Armistice Assembly Program. November 12, Chamber of Commerce Program. December 29, Community Xmas Program. January 21, Chamber of Commerce Program. April 2, Chamber of Commerce Program. Individual members of the club have contributed musically by their solo, duet and quartet singing. This year's singing experience has added greatly to that of last year's and the directorrhopes for an even better year in the time to come. i22l Qrchestra The orchestra under the direction of Miss Fiske, has played an impor- tant part in the musical life at Woodlawn school. New players and instru- ments have been added resulting in a membership of twelve. The enthu- siasm shown by the members has helped greatly to overcome their inex- perience in orchestra work, and due to many hours of hard work, this organization has raised itself to a much higher standard. A higher and more difficult grade of music has been studied this year which has added greatly to the orchestra's repertoire. The following pro- grams were given and heartily received: January-Chamber of Commerce Program. February-P. T. A. Program. March-Senior Play. June-Commencement Program. Violins Trombone Frank Zimny Frank Bowman Paul Sipos Lettie Corey John Meyers -'Uff' Ferris Killian Joe Bowman Trumpets P- J. T. Bowman limo Pearl Davidson Betty Knowlton Billy Bowman Martin Todd Director, Miss Fiske i233 qdoysj glee Glue This club was organized under the supervision of the music instructor, Miss Fiske, and the members consist of boys from the intermediate and high schoolldepartments. Previous to this year, the boys had no experience in part singing. However, attractive new glee club books were ordered and the boys have shown a marked interest in part song work. With this yearis experience and the establishing of changed voices for next year, the club has high hopes for the future. The b0y's efforts were enthusiastically received when they sang on the Chamber of Commerce program in February. QRVLCZ So much enthusiasm has been shown in instrumental work this year that a band was organized in March to give many students an opportunity to learn to play an instrument. New instruments were rented by the school and assigned to various students to play. The willingness of the students to learn to play on these instruments made the preliminaries of beginning practice, easy. ' At present, the band has a membership of sixteen players. New uni- forms have been ordered and the band expects to carry off high honors in appearance and playing ability on Memorial Day. On April 14, the band made its first appearance in Assembly. Their efforts were well received by the student body. Just watch this organiza- tion put the pep into school spirit at Woodlawn. 1, E241 THE BAND Social '33 Come, and trip it, as you go, On the light fantastic toe. -John Milton The above quotation suggests the good times enjoyed at the social activities held in Woodlawn School this year. We have had several dances 5 some of which Mr. Beam sponsored, and some of which the various classes took charge. The first dance of the year was held September 20. ,Students and faculty alike displayed enthusiasm when discussing the plans for the party. Mr. Walker furnished the music. There were several Virginia Reels and Paul Jones. What would a party be without refreshments? Of course, about ten-thirty everyone enjoyed lunch. The first party proved so successful that a Hallowe'en party was planned for November 1. This began with the usual Hallowe'en parade. Then, students returned to the school where teachers and parents co-oper- ated in serving cider and doughnuts to the students. The following evening the High School held a costume dance which proved highly successful. The Thanksgiving season aroused a desire for another party. Conse- quently, Mr. Walker's services were again solicited, and on November 27 students and faculty were making merry at another school dance. The Christmas season approached. Certainly we could not allow it to pass without some kind of jolly party! With all the enthusiasm of the season a party was planned for December 28. Music was furnished by Mr. Walker. A fact which impressed us favorably was that a number of new students who entered the High School were enjoying themselves immensely. Now it seemed that the individual classes felt capable of launching parties. The Sophomores were pioneers in this plan. Through Miss Fiske, they secured The Girl Friend's Orchestra, which furnished lively music for the dance. This party had several novel features. For instance, there was a banquet supper early in the evening. Guests, including the I26l Alumni and the Board of Education Were invited. It Was due to the efforts of the Sophs and their able adviser, Mr. Cavalieri that this party on Feb- ruary 27 was a great success. Of course the Freshmen must show their talent. They secured The Girl Friend's Orchestra for a dance on April 11. Their party Was dis- tinguished by the use of programs cleverly designed. They invited the ex- students as their guests. The Freshman adviser, Miss Fiske, exerted every effort to make the party enjoyable. The Juniors, with their adviser Miss M. Creedon, planned a dance for April 23. They, too, engaged The Girl Friend's Orchestra. They were eager to Welcome Alumni and eX-students as guests. The banquet was dis- pensed With, but delicious punch was served throughout the evening. The banquet vvas dis- pensed With, but delicious punch was served throughout the evening. At the present time Mr. Beam, senior adviser, and the Senior Class are making plans for a Senior Ball. We believe that this will be the climax of the social activities of the year. When We review the social functions of the year, We are pleased to say that they were indeed highly successful. 'L lf du Toi 'V ,, QI' X .lj A The CZQ9oodlawnian Early last September, the question of how to keep an accurate memo- randum of school events and activities arose. After much discussion, it was decided that the students would issue a school paper. After a great deal of meditation and hesitation, an editor was chosen. Soon after, however, this person left school. Immediately another was appointed. The staff, which included high school students and a representative from the grades was chosen next. Stories, jokes, athletics, social items and other interesting material was dropped into a contribution box. This material was then sorted, arranged and typed preparatory to making reproductions. The 'KDitto Machine, be- longing to the school, made this Work possible. As the year went by, more interest was centered in our Woodlawnian.', The students, teachers and townspeople began to look forward to the day that this monthly issue was to be on sale. We have made a success of this first year's production and hope to carry on this good work in the years to follow. The foundation has been laid and our aim is for bigger and better materials and papers. -YE ED. l28l gm6QDm2 Q Athletics ZWQOJQS CVD Qgasfeetball Kgeam 1929- 1950 Back row-Mr. Cavalieri, coach, Joseph Jacob, James Hoffman, John Myers, manager g William Schmid, Ferris Killian, John Battaglia, Mr Gugino, coach. Then, the question, Where are we going to. play 'P' came up. Our assembly and gymnasium room had been remodeled to meet the demand for more space. Finally we found a solution. We still had the great out of doors. We set up baskets outside and started to practice. During the warm autumn days this was very enjoyable. But each day brought colder weather, and Hnally we were forced to stop our open air basketball. All attempts to secure a basketball court failed. In spite of our handicap our hopes ran high. Our manager, John Myers scheduled games with the neighboring high schools. We even entered the Erie County B League. But later, we were forced to drop out because we had failed to secure a court. However, we were not discouraged. Our manager had secured games with Angola, Blasdell, Eden, Sloan, Silver Creek, Hamburg, St. Mary's of Lancaster and Lackawanna Friendship House. These schools consented to let us play on their courts even though we could not give them a return game. When the season was over, the score book showed more defeats than victories. Considering our lack of facilities this was no surprise. In fact we felt that the season had been a success under present conditions. The major letter W was awarded to the following players: Rex Hazlett, John Hutka, Ferris Killian, William Jann, John Myers, and James Hoffman. Small squad letters were given to John Battaglia, Joseph Jacob, Larry Rush, William Schmid, Louis Jann, and Harold Whittaker, our worthy cheer leader. During the spring vacation the field Was put in shape g and When the students returned after vacation, they started consistent earnest practice. The team was entered in the B League, and a schedule was arranged with the following teams: Gardenville, Ebenezer, Eden, Blasdell, and West Seneca. N on-league games were arranged With Angola. The final game of the season will be played with Eden at the annual school picnic at Chestnut Ridge Park. E311 gfoznemaking The Homemaking department is one which must not be overlooked. When it comes to the refreshments the girls are always on the job. The Chamber of Commerce had a dinner every two weeks this winter. These were planned, prepared and served by the girls. The girls had never done any of this work before. At first it was very hard for them but there was a steady improvement until they were able to serve a delicious dinner without any aid. This was done quickly and carefully without any con- fusion. The girls are to be complimented on their work. There are also courses offered in clothing work, house planning and decoration, child care and home nursing. These are of especial value to the scouts as it involves much community service work and allows the girl to do a great deal of individual work. The boys have also shown interest in a class in Camp Cookery. It is rumored that they are going to prepare a feast and we may be invited! I can not express my feeling too strongly that every girl no matter what course she is taking should try to include one or two Homemaking courses. l32l Industrial Arts ishop With the purchase of a band saw, lathe, and jointer by the Board of Education we now have an up-to-date industrial arts shop. The shop was alwavs popular with the boys, and with the increased space and additional machinery this year it played a much greater part in the life of the school. The students were able to take up the more advanced projects including turned lamps, living room tables, etc. But the making of projects is not the main aim in Industrial Arts. The work develops skill in the manual operations so necessary in the life of to- day. The ability to use the common woodworking tools enables a man to perform many minor jobs in the home that otherwise would require calling in a mechanic. Likewise. knowledge of sheet metal tools and of the prin- ciples of electricity will always be valuable to the individual who must do odd jobs around the home. Manual Training teaches the importance of accuracy. This trait so necessary for success in any branch of work is developed in an industrial arts shop. Then too, the boy through contact with the various phases of the work may develop some trend toward an avocation or hobby. In our life of today this is a great asset. So much of the time of workmen today is spent in a Vresome activity such as machine operator or routine office work. If the leisure time can then be spent in some worthy avocation, much pleasure can be had. Finallv. an Industrial Arts Shop helps a boy to find himself. It may open up to him some work that he can make his life activity. Interest in electricity leads to many branches of useful workg work in mechanical draw- ing may lead to some branch of engineeringg the metal and wood may open up possibilities in the metal and woodworking trades. So we see that a well equipped Industrial Arts Shop is an asset to any school. I33l Gommelfcial Qefvarfmenf The Commercial Department was organized in September 1929 under the direction of Miss Choa. The students Who are taking this course mani- fested a great deal of interest throughout the year. They have aided the school by typing the monthly school paper and many articles for various occasions. Each student has had practical ex- perience in offlce Work by having charge of the principal's office one period each day. In this department both the accounting and the stenographic courses are taught.
