Proudly we wear thy Purple and white Fight for each victory With our strength and might. When’er we leave thee School of our youth We’ll never forget thee For thy guiding truth; For thou hast prepared us Each step of the way To live and to grow In this world today. Special thanks to Steve Dykes and Holly Johnston for providing us with the artwork used on these pages and on graduation invitations. Woodlawn is a colorful kaliedoscope of moving faces and going places. Each of us has endured the humiliation of initiation week, campaigned for an office, experienced our first Homecoming and our last prom, cried as we lost a game and cheered as the other team fell to defeat. We are chosen to represent our school whether it be as participants or as spectators looking on as memories are made and the old begin to fade. High School memories are filled with the expectation of senior trip, graduation, and the trivial things such as finding a date or the money to pay for a date. We all share in an array ranging from the concerns of wearing the latest look to winning the spirit stick at a pep rally or letting that special someone know you exist. We do this all as students striving for the eternal sweetness that high school will always hold. Bryan Johnson, lazily dreams of senior trip and graduation as he expresses the ultimate senior attitude. Leslie LoBue and Steve Ownes arc decked out in their homecoming attire and make a cute couple. above Robert Pierce, Buddy Tidwell, and Jerry Mims arc seen backstage of Take Her She's Mine”, this year's Drama production, left Doug Gulley, senior, receives a friendly hug from Woody the panther mascot at a pep ralley. bottom Mary Taggard, senior, is decked out in her camaflouge for Rambo Day during Homecoming week. above Michelle Aria and Cory Stansbury, seniors, enjoy spending their weekends together watching movies, right Nannetto Lafayette, Nora Henderson. Reliable rces stated that the Panthers were prepared to defend the Woodlawn lor against the Green Devils of Plaquemine. Wednesday we spotted M M's” and rag dolls for Twin Day. Thursday the Panthers were Mad for Plaid. New members in the various groups around Woodlawn were initiated in a variety of ways. Friday was Purple and White Day.” Some people simply wore purple shirts while others went all out dressed in painted purple jeans, with shiny pants and carried pom poms. Friday night, before the game, a parade was held. Various clubs and individuals participated. The float sponsored by the Junior Varsity Cheerleaders won the award for best float. The parade ended with Woody, the Woodlawn Panther, leaping out of a black limousine arousing the spirit of the Panther fans. Although the Purple Panthers did not defeat the Green Devils the festivities of the week made up for the loss. The WHS Jr.-Sr. Prom was held at Stage 1. The theme for this year's prom was Southern Nights. The hall was decorated with blue and white streamers and balloons. Wine goblets were given out as favors. Music was provided by a disc jockey. Most couples began the evening with dinner at a prestigious restaurant and ended the night with breakfast parties. The Band and Choir trip this year was an extravagant one, going all the way to Orlando, Florida to Walt Disney World. Students boarded Greyhound buses Thursday afternoon and traveled twelve hours through the night. No one slept, anticipating the fun ahead. For many students, this was a first time visit and a very exciting one. They spent four fun-filled days at Disney World, EPCOT, and Waterworld. In contrast to the trip over, students were dead to the world on the way home. They are looking forward to the trip ahead next May to Ft. Walton Beach, Florida. 29 30 AWARDS AND SCHOLARSHIPS American Legion-Tara Rauscher. I'll never get this chance again, so I couldn't say no! — Ann Nilsen Exchange Student from Sweden This year, four students from Europe and South America came to live in Baton Rouge and attend Wood lawn for a full school year, leaving everything in their lives (that wouldn't fit into two suitcases) behind them. Our new far-travelled friends are Sandro Tomo, from Italy. Lilia Charcas. from Agentma. Jessica Nilsson and Ann Nilsen. both from Sweden. Sandro Tomo finds school in the U.S. easier than in his native Italy. Sandro speaks Italian. Spanish. Swedish. English and is currently enrolled in Latin at Woodlawn. His trip to Baton Rouge went smoothly until the airport lost his luggage. Sandra finds the people at Woodlawn nice but crazy. He wants to play basketball for Woodlawn very much. Lilia Charcas says life here is very different from Argentina. At school there, teachers move from classroom to classroom, with the students remaining in the same classroom for the entire day. The average dinner hour is around 10:00 pm. Rugby and soccer take the place of football as the leading sports. Lilia loves McDonalds, pep rallies, and Woodlawn. but she is a little homesick. Lilia is bilingual-she speaks Spanish and English. Jessica Nilsson is very excited about being here. More than anything, she and Lilia would like to visit New Orleans. Jessica speaks French. Spanish, Swedish, and English. She loves McDonalds and American football. Ann Nilsen has only been at Woodlawn for a month. She transferred from Baker High. When told that she could come to the U.S. as an exchange student, she couldn't say no. Ann says that Woodlawn is different from her school in Sweden in that we are not allowed to wear Sven Olsen shorts to school. She feels that Woodlawn students and faculty are very friendly. All of the exchange students are extremely friendly and they are very eager to learn about our country and our lifestyles. Please welcome them. Ciaou, Sandro! IBien venido, Lilia! Valkommna. An outline must be organized with attention given to details so that no one and nothing is left out. Pictures must be identified, sorted and alphabetized flubs and activities must he photographed. Copy must be written and rewritten. Layouts must be drawn to picture yearbook pages. We all tend to go a little crazy everytime a deadline approaches. What emerges from all this hectic work is a group of friends who feel proud of their accomplishments and who share precious memories of putting together a permanent record of the 1985-86 school year. Tri-Hi-Y members participated as senators, respresentatives. and court delegates at the Youth Legislature. The club received an outstanding leadership award for its accomplishments. Though much is learned at Youth Legislature the memories and friends made throughout the state make for a lasting experience that one doesn't forget easily. A major event for the junior class was the long awaited day when we received our senior class rings. All of the juniors will agree that class rings are a special way to remember the fun of our high school years. Through the year the juniors worked hard to make money and set dates for a great prom. Some of the fund raisers we had this year included a car wash and a contest held for the sexiest legs at Woodlawn. In addition to all these events, the most important thought that is on every junior's mind is knowing that next year we will have seniority. PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE In my sixth year at Woodlawn I feel comfortable in my role as principal. It is a real pleasure to work with the best faculty and some of the finest young men and women to be found anywhere, our students Woodlawn’s students consistently score higher on the State Assessment Tests than any regular high school in the parish, and Woodlawn has the lowest suspension rate in our parish. It is unfortunate that these two facts do not attract the attention that the misdeeds of a very small percentage of our students cause. I am very enthusiastic about the community support for Woodlawn that grows stronger each year and particularly the parents that work so hard for the improvement of the educational program of Woodlawn High School. I hope you enjoy your yearbook and know that through the years it will become even more valuable. 89 MS. WILLIE JOHNSON, API Ms. Johnson graduated from Booker T. SPORTS FOOTBALL •- %n—W irfs. ih :-• ■ - V-,nr w The Panther Football Team proved once again that it is made of the right stuff. The Panthers JV team were district champions this year and posted a 9-1 record. The Varsity Team posted an 8-4 record and became district runner-up for the second year in a row. The Panther team got off to a great start by winning its first two games with a 9-0 victory over Catholic High at home. The win over Tara's Tro- f;ans 10-0 was also inspirational. The Panthers then ost a heart breaker to the Broadmoor Bucs. 14-15 in overtime. It was a game in which star Quarterback Bucky Richardson tossed a game-winning pass to his receiver in the end zone for the victory. The following week the Panthers' faced their first district opponent. Redeptorist. Once again they proved that they were made of the ''right stuff. The Panthers massacred the Wolves of Redemptorist 24-0; and began to look ahead toward Bogalusa. In a game in which the Panthers were sluggish, the Lumberjacks hammered the Panthers 21-0. The following weeks of the season were all district opponents. The Pan-thers won every district game except Plaquemine. The Green Devils, ranked number 3 in the state, outlasted the Panthers in a struggle and won 19-7. But still the Panthers continued the tradition of excellence, by pounding Port Allen 24-0. Then they won their first playoff game under Coach Harry THE MOTIVATOR' Ingalls, against the Vander-built Catholic Terriers to the tune of 28-22. It was a hard fought victory in which the Panthers struggled through most of the first half, but soon got on track. It was one of the most exciting games of the year. The following week the team traveled to Eunice. The Bobcats' ended the hopes of our Panthers to reach the Superdome. But we still feel that our Football Team is made of the RIGHT STUFF'. Leila West, Jennifer Lama be. Kelly Strickland, Debra Westbrook. Jolyn Cefalu, Jennifer Cook. Jennifer Barber. Tanya Toni, and Shannon Henderson The Lady Panthers Volleyball team ended up fifth place in district. Starting out with a very-young team, they strived and worked hard this season. Spirit was high throughout every game win or lose. The only thing that stands in the way on these young athletes is the experience and knowledge of a true volleyball team. GIRLS BASKETBALL Mrs. Bonnie Hunter Jennifer Barber. Kelly Phillips, Rushawn Drake. Tanya Toney. Melissa Lawrence. Angie Guins, Monica Brickens. Lisa Butterfield. Laurie Veillon. Kelly Strickland, Lara Sutton. Tina Rider. Jolynn Cefula, and Rhonda Switzer. The Lady Panthers basketball team consisted of four juniors, four sophomores, and nine freshmen as the season began. We had a 6'2' sophomore and a petite junior waiting in the shadows for eligibility as grades were reported for midterm. We faced the fact that the season was going to be very strenuous physically and mentally, after all we were very young fundamentally. The young athletes never lost the will to win. Two juniors and two sophomores decided that they lacked the necessary dedication it took to build a winning program and gracefully bowed out. Dcna Sanders, a freshman, had one medical problem after another beginning early in the season, but never gave up on hoping that she would be able to return before the season ended. She didn't get back; but she will be there next year with bells on! The few opportunities that we had to play girls our age prosed to them that the future would be brighter. Like that Timex watch -we took a lickcn' and kept on tickin'. They were at practice every day they weren't playing games; they kept good grade point averages (2 pt. and above!); and seldom did they let that determined smile leave their shining faces. They always came back with, We'll get'em next year, Miz Hunter! You know- I just bet they will! BOYS BASKETBALL Coach Kenny Almond. Neil Nett, Coach Newport Paul Clement. Sean Knox. Scott Moulard. This Year the Woodlawn Varsity Basketball team had eleven wins and twenty-one loses, with their best scoring game against Northeast, sixty-two to fourty-seven. Their highest score all year was eighty-six against Port Allen with seventy-two. Better luck next year Panthers. Dean Lessard, Paul Toups. Kendric Talbot, Randy Johnson, Sean Bartie. Kyle Huxen, Rob Robbins, John Scoginns, David Boscki. and Iiron Archie. The Woodlawn Junior Varsity Basketball team had nine wins and thirteen losses this year. Their highest score all year was sixty-three against Plaqucmine with fourty-four. Their best scoring game all year was another game against Plaqucmine with Woodlawn leading with twenty-five points. Better luck next year Panthers. Sean Bartie. Iiron Archie. Todd Waguespack, Kendric Talbot. John Harvey, Rodney Young. Brian Decanturc. Brent Decanture, Josh Hardy. Mike Smith, Sean Marchifava, and Chris Smith. The Freshman Basketball team had a very good year with ten wins and only seven loses. Melissa Lawrence, Trish McIntyre, Cheryl Bayles, Tylee Jackson, Jolynn Cefalu, Tammy McGeorge. Laurie Yawn. Rushawn Drake, Kim Hardison. Kelly Strickland, and Lelia West. Our Season play opened with the Bclairc Jamboree on a frosty morning in February. The season was off to a good start as we played a tough defense and sent Trish McIntyre home on a pass ball in the bottom of the third and final inning of play to win the game 5-2. The next set of three innings appears to have foreshadowed the outcome of the District 3AAA contest as Redemptorist defeated the Lady Panthers by the fifteen run rule. As with a lot of basically young high school teams, we experienced a series of ups and downs. Some days we looked like superstars; other days we needed bushel baskets for gloves and two by fours for bats. Through all their trials and tribulations the athletes prevailed. They were victorious in the fact that they made practices and games with sore muscles, upset stomaches. headaches, bruised bodies and broken fingernails. Most overcame the temptation to be headstrong and weak links in the team chain. The athletes wanted to put forth 100 for a team effort, not individual glory. With a little Lady Luck on our part the ladies could have compiled an impressive scorecard behind the talented freshman pitcher Jennifer Cook. Our two seniors Becky Wilson and Sharon Harris provided leadership off the field with practice preparation. On the field they both were leaders again- Becky with her cheerleading and words of encouragement -Sharon with her long ball hitting and aggressive base running ability. As Catcher. Sharon provided the second half of the all-important battery for the team. In praising these girls I am taking nothing away from the remaining team members who were steady consistent athletes. Their desire and ability will earn them their written praises in days to come. Verbal praises are already being sung. tear BASEBALL TEAM Coad Moock Troy Lejeune, Brian Boudreaux, Mike Toups, Christian Lindsey. Baseball is the all-American spring time sport, and we at Woodlawn take it very seriously. The baseball players here at Woodlawn is divided into 2 teams. Varsity and J.V. The Coach of Varsity is Coach Moock and J.V. is Coach Nett. The season for both teams went quite well. Even though neither team placed, the players and coaches gave all they had. The Varsity team consist of 13 players. Five of which are seniors. Brian Beale is the pitcher and first basemen. Dodd Davis is the third basemen. Mike Gall, Christian Lindsey, and Jeff Nice play the outfield. This years Varsity team also consisted of eight juniors, two sophomores, and one freshman. We wish you luck new year Panthers. Even with numerous strains, pulls, stitches, and doings of a certain problem child we managed to have a lot of fun during the season. Our first meet was Belaire’s Bengal Relay's followed by a duel meet against St. Amant, Tara's Lady Trojan Relays, St. Amant’s Lady Gators Invitationals, and ending with the district meet at Walker High School. The team was composed of only seven 9th and 10th graders. Each one showed potential for great things to come in next year's track season. The '86 Track team would like to encourage all girls interested in track field to plan to join the fun next year. We promise matching sweat suits. The turn out was overwhelming! Many parents came to watch their sons and daughters receive recognition for their participation in school activities. Softball, basketball, baseball, track, swimming, tennis, golf, cross country, and cheerleading were among the sports recognized that night. The MC was Athletic Director Harry Ingalls. He began the program with a prayer from Dodd E avis, President of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Mr. George Kostuch ended the night with a thank you”. He is President of the Panther Pushers. Congratulations to the Fine young men and women receiving awards! SENIORS Within my book of memories are special thoughts of you and all the many nice things you so often say and do — and as I turn the pages and recall each single thought, I realize the happiness that knowing you has brought! There are memories of the times we shared — both bright and gloomy days — there are memories of your kindness and your friendly, thoughtful ways. There are memories of your laughter and gay and cheery smile that add a bright note to each day and make life more worth while. There are memories of the things we planned — Each friendly little chat, when we would get together and talk of this and that — and when I recall these memories as I go along life’s way, I find they grow more special still with every passing day. Saber 117 SENIOR TRIP Tradition was upheld as seniors arrived in droves in Florida to celebrate graduation. Seniors spent a last few days of comaraderie with old friends and new friends blistering in the sand and sun and frolicking in the beautiful blue • green waves. It was a wistful week that the seniors hated to see end. But end it did! Thoughts are turning now to summer jobs and packing up for school in the fall or on to careers in the working world. GRADUATION: May 21, 1986 LSU Assembly Center CLASS COLORS: Purple, White, and Silver CLASS SONG: Change by John Waite CLASS FLOWER: White Rose CLASS MOTTO: I shall pass through this world but once, If there be any kindness I can show, Let me do it now . . . Jamie Davis Each year we. as seniors, collected memories, made friends and even enemies, but as our high school career comes to a close we begin to cherish those memories, hold tightly to our friends and grasp to make amends with each other. With graduation close at hand we seem to be lost with new found responsibilities while still grasping in a childlike way for our lockers and prom invitations. Though we have all hated and loved Woodtawn and each other, we, the Class of 86, will never lose Woodlawn and will forever be comforted with the same smile and the accompanying tears as we say goodbye.
