FIRST GRADE Dear Diary. It won't be long now and school wlB be out and I will have finished first grade. It was hard but I sure learned a lot. At first we worked on sounds, sounds and more sounds. Then we used those sounds and started to read stories. We sure did a lot of reading. Now I can read whole books and work puzzles and even figure out the words Mom and Dad. Another thing I've learned to do Is add and subtract, count and write my numbers to 100. tell time and count money. My teacher was always giving us work to do and teling us to be stil and do our best. I did pretty good. I only had to stand in the corner once. My teacher reaiy wasn't mean. She just wanted us to do good and learn a lot. I like her and she likes me. too. We even went places this year. We went to the Massey log Cabin and to see an elephant race and we went to the library at the big school a lot. We even had al the first graders let a balloon go for the Weekly Reader Pen Pal Club. Some of the balloons went al the way to Tennessee. The most fun I had was at recess. That's when the boys chase the girls and the girls chase the boys. Maybe that wil help me win a blue ribbon in the Olympics at Play Day. I had a good time at school this year. I hope next year wil be fun too. I wonder who my teacher wil be. 5

KINDERGARTEN Dear Diary. Our first year In school has been very full and rewarding. At first we didn't want to leave our Moms, but they said we must. As we adjusted to being away from Mom. we realized school had a lot to offer (and it was even fun too). We started out the year by discussing things we already knew a lot about — our families and colors. Then we enjoyed learning the letters of the alphabet with the ALPHA TIME characters and songs. IJ BUCKLE MY SHOE. THE NUMBER ROCK. THE MONTHS OF THE YEAR. DAYS OF THE WEEK and ABC ROCK are the names of some of our favorite songs and they helped us learn some of our Important lessons. Some of our favorite songs for fun were Ballin' the Jack. The Freeze and the Modern Version of She'll Be Coming Around the Mountain (riding In a Hot Rod. pink pajamas, chocolate pizza). As we went through the year we found that each month brought new and different things for us to learn and have fun with. Above - Mr . Cooper explains that you rode the bus that matched the sign you were wearing. Above - Everyone wore a name tag for a few days. This helped the teacher and bus driver learn their name.

SECOND GRADE Dear Diary. Our second-graders had an enjoyable and busy year. Last fal. math facta were learned In Monster Math and Indian Math. After we knew our facts, we went on to regrouping. We often used our classroom computer to practice our sklls. Thanksgiving brought our annual feast prepared by the children In their classrooms. The Indians and Pilgrims gathered together to feast on stew, muffins, applesauce, and dessert. January began a new year and a new kind of writing — cursive. The children eagerly looked forward to learning the new letters each day. Science and Social Studies were fun times, too. We studied rocks, communities, conservation, maps, and foods. The highlights of these units were a field trip to Cape Girardeau, a Nature trail wall, and a hike to the artesian wefl. We have many fond memories of this year. Second Grade Teachers
