77 87 10j 25 1 DIARY OF THE WORLD The fall of 1984 was dominated by the national presidential election campaign. The Republicans nominated incumbents Ronald Reagan and George Bush. The Democratic convention chose Walter Mondale, and made history by naming Geraldine Ferraro as the first woman to appear at the top of a major party ticket. After a landslide victory in November, President Reagan was returned to the White House. Internationally political leadership changed or was threatened in several regions. As a result of assassination, Prime Minister Indira Gandhi of India was replaced by her son Sanjay. In Russia, Mikhail Gorbachev came to the leadership of the Soviet State. Jose Napoleon Duarte and Daniel Ortega was newsmakers in Central American politics. Medical history was made by artificial heart recipient William Schroeder. We closely watched developments in the case of Baby Fae” who lived briefly after a heart transplanted from a baboon. In early June septuplets were born to an American couple. In other news, the Russians and Chinese concluded a treaty concerning the future of Hong Kong. The Union Carbide Company was blamed for an industrial disaster in Bhopal, India. Because of entrapment, John DeLorean was found not quilty of dealing drugs and Vanesa Williams became the first Miss America forced to resign. Entertainment news was made by Prince, Madonna, Cindi Lauper, and groups like Duran Duran. The family farm was the subject of such Hollywood films as The River, Places in the Heart, and Country. The board game Trivial Pursuit became an obsession and the VCR became increasingly popular for home entertainment. As the school year came to a close. President Reagan announced his new tax plan for Congressional approval, terrorist activities increased and the U.S. faced a hostage crisis in Lebanon. 2 DIARY OF THE YEAR AUGUST J Teacher1 Workshop 27-Flr t day of tchool SEPTEMBER 3-No fchooM.cuf- Day 7- Woodland I tv. At first we didn't want to leave our Moms, but they said we must. As we adjusted to being away from Mom. we realized school had a lot to offer (and it was even fun too). We started out the year by discussing things we already knew a lot about — our families and colors. Then we enjoyed learning the letters of the alphabet with the ALPHA TIME characters and songs. IJ BUCKLE MY SHOE. THE NUMBER ROCK. THE MONTHS OF THE YEAR. DAYS OF THE WEEK and ABC ROCK are the names of some of our favorite songs and they helped us learn some of our Important lessons. Some of our favorite songs for fun were Ballin' the Jack. The Freeze and the Modern Version of She'll Be Coming Around the Mountain (riding In a Hot Rod. pink pajamas, chocolate pizza). As we went through the year we found that each month brought new and different things for us to learn and have fun with. Above - Mr . Cooper explains that you rode the bus that matched the sign you were wearing. Above - Everyone wore a name tag for a few days. This helped the teacher and bus driver learn their name. FIRST GRADE Dear Diary. It won't be long now and school wlB be out and I will have finished first grade. It was hard but I sure learned a lot. At first we worked on sounds, sounds and more sounds. Then we used those sounds and started to read stories. We sure did a lot of reading. Now I can read whole books and work puzzles and even figure out the words Mom and Dad. Another thing I've learned to do Is add and subtract, count and write my numbers to 100. tell time and count money. My teacher was always giving us work to do and teling us to be stil and do our best. I did pretty good. I only had to stand in the corner once. My teacher reaiy wasn't mean. She just wanted us to do good and learn a lot. I like her and she likes me. too. We even went places this year. We went to the Massey log Cabin and to see an elephant race and we went to the library at the big school a lot. We even had al the first graders let a balloon go for the Weekly Reader Pen Pal Club. Some of the balloons went al the way to Tennessee. The most fun I had was at recess. That's when the boys chase the girls and the girls chase the boys. Maybe that wil help me win a blue ribbon in the Olympics at Play Day. I had a good time at school this year. I hope next year wil be fun too. I wonder who my teacher wil be. 5 SECOND GRADE Dear Diary. Our second-graders had an enjoyable and busy year. Last fal. math facta were learned In Monster Math and Indian Math. After we knew our facts, we went on to regrouping. We often used our classroom computer to practice our sklls. Thanksgiving brought our annual feast prepared by the children In their classrooms. The Indians and Pilgrims gathered together to feast on stew, muffins, applesauce, and dessert. January began a new year and a new kind of writing — cursive. The children eagerly looked forward to learning the new letters each day. Science and Social Studies were fun times, too. We studied rocks, communities, conservation, maps, and foods. The highlights of these units were a field trip to Cape Girardeau, a Nature trail wall, and a hike to the artesian wefl. We have many fond memories of this year. Second Grade Teachers THIRD GRADE Dear Diary, There 1« so much to learn in the third grade. We ftudicd and dr lied until we could pas our 100 addition and subtraction facta In five minute . Then we started on multiplication. We have worked on sublets, predicates, nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, and adverbs until we should never forget them. In Reading, we did some fun things like magic tricks and also made rock candy and built a castle cake, which we ate. Bollnger County has many interesting people and places that we studied, too. After we found Indian Children so easy to memorize, can you believe we memorized The Night Before Christmas? It wasn't so easy I We printed a newspaper and had a play about famous people born in February. We did research and reports on them too. Social Studies and Science are our favorite subjects. We just never seem to have enough time for everything. FOURTH GRADE Dear Diary. Fourth grade has been very exciting this year. W have studied how people live in different part of the world. Wa learned about the pianets. how animals adapt to their environment, and how plants grow and make food. We did an Interesting unit on conservation and learned many fascinating facts about wildlife common to Missouri. Math class has been both a |oy and a trial to the students. We practiced addition and subtraction and spent a lot of time learning the multiplication facts. Division proved to be a real chaflenge for everyone. We even tried our hand at fractions. Language class was carried on al day in a sense, as we tried to drop our habit of using double negatives. We spent a lot of time on parts of speech and writing in complete sentences. Our teacher says we’ve done very wel this year and that she's very proud of our accomplishments 8 FIFTH GRADE Dear Diary. The fifth grade war an exciting year. In social studies. the clast studied about the United States. The students particularly enjoyed learning about the Rocky Mountain states because many of them had visited the National Parks. 5-B class also used Friday s St. Louis Post Dispatch to supplement the social studies lessons. The class liked It when they got to work with friends to look up answers. Some answers were easy and others were very hard to find. Math was very challenging because we learned about fractions and how to work long division. In science, the class studied about different kinds of animals and plants. Of course. P.E. Is )ust about everybody's favorite subject. We ran racei. fflJfed dodgebal. basketbal. softball and soccer. Practicing for play day event! took up a lot of the time in the fourth quarter. All looked forward to Ihf special day of fun and games. I 9 SIXTH GRADE Dear Diary. The sixth grade has been terrific. The people are great. For Instance. Charles Laxton has a way of making you laugh when you are down In the dumps. And Mrs. Jackson Is a good sport over losing a game of checkers during winter recesses. The whole class Is full of great friends. We had a lot of fun this year, like when our reading groups had to act out biography reports. Aimee Elfrink was Dolly Parton. Carol Rhodes was Elvis Presley. Dawn Rhodes was Lady Di. There were several good reports enjoyed by the entire class. The class learned about dental care, drug abuse, and lots of neat things. We even had a class election between Reagan and Mondaic. We got to write to the candidates, and several of us received a booklet in the mall about the White House. Elijah Allen received a personal letter from President Reagan discussing some of the campaign Issues. Al In aH. It's been a great sixth grade year. Students of Mrs. Jackson's class SEVENTH GRADE Dear Diary, What a change. Now we have a different teacher for each subject and a different room for each teacher. Several of our classes are even in the high school. It kind of makes me nervous being around those big high school kids. I am enjoying school. There is so much to learn and so many activities to go to. We have volleyball and basketball games and I can even try out to be a cheerleader. EIGHTH GRADE Dear Diary. After a year of adjusting to junior high life, we are used to class changes, schedule choices, etc., but there are still a few new experiences to face — such as the BEST test (Basic Education Skills Test). The biggest change is knowing that high school is just around the corner. FRESHMEN Dear Diary. Wow! It's hard to believe we re in high school. As I look back over all my elementary and junior high years. I realize why people call these the most fun years of your life. Now. I guess you could say we’re at the beginning of the end. Juft four more short years. Just last month we pre-enrolled for the rest of our high school years. Some kids are going to college and are concerned about scholarship! and funds. But it’s not all work! The ballgames and activities keep us busy. Altogether it's not that much different than junior high, but the feelings that come with it lure are! SOPHOMORES Dear Diary, Although most of us do not have the greatest study habits in the tenth grade, these habits usually improve when the time comes for the drivers’ exam. After memorizing the Missouri driver’s manual backward and forward — most of us felt prepared for the written test, and most of us passed the first time. JUNIORS Dear Diary. Boy, it doesn’t seem possible that I only have one more year of high school left. This year has been filled with many activities. I have attended ballgames. coronations, the carnival and banquets. We ordered our senior rings — that sure was exciting. I am so proud of it. I'll always remember the Prom. My dress was the most beautiful thing I have ever seen. It was a lovely Prom and I had a great time. The funny thing to remember about the Prom was that the decorations blew out of the truck on the way to Cape and scared us because we were afraid they were lost. They were found though. We didn’t have the three tiered decorated cake either. Someone dropped it down the elevator shaft from the third floor. Can you imagine what it looked like by the time it hit the ground floor? Classes and homeworkl Sometimes it seems like teachers want us to spend all our free time doing work for their class. But I know it's hard for them too. You know diary, students don’t give teachers enough credit. It would be a tough job to be in their shoes. They have to plan their lessons, keep us under control (which isn’t too easy), and the support they give us in our extra-curricular activities is really greatl Even though, but especially because they are demanding. I really appreciate my teachers. When you think about it teachers are an influence on life I’ll never forgetl Bye for now, I need to finish my homework. BONAGENE DEVENFORT B.S.. Elcm. Ed.. It's nice to have our “acrubbydutch” crew that keeps our hall and classrooms shining like new money. Maybe If we had their Jobs we’d be a little neater In the bathrooms and lunch room. It must take a lot of Hbow grease” to keep things looking so nice. These guys work odd hours keeping the building warm and the gym serviceable for balgames. Thanks to the custodians for putting up with our messiness. Our bus mechanics have quite a responsibility — keeping f9 buses on the IJ65 miles we travel throughout the county. Their day starts very early — being on cal for flat tires, dead batteries, and various other break downs. No matter what the weather conditions, rain or shine — they're the ones who “keep the wheels roling for our school. Sibyl Nanney and her kindergarten posed beside their bus on the first day of school Dear Diary. Our bus drivers are special people since they are the first people to greet us in the morning and they're the one's who deliver us home safely at the end of each day from being caged” at school for almost seven hours. Sometimes we think they have eyes in the back of their heads because they always seem to know when we've been misbehaving. With the miles of country roads, snow, and sudden high waters our drivers are very courageous. We're proud of our crew's driving record. CUSTODIANS £ MAINTENANCE — Lee Mahasongkham. Charles Kempfer. I think we did pretty well. We won third place in the Scott City Tournament. At the beginning of the season we were all sort of nervous, because we didn’t know exactly what we were supposed to do, but by the middle of the season we were getting the hang of it and I think we all enjoyed it. Coach Collins really helped the team by teaching us new plays and keeping us in shape . I'm looking forward to next year as we Lady Cards go after another season. Tracy Page.
