Mr. Mooney graduated from the University of Missouri in June 1955, with a B.S. degree and a major in Vocational Agriculture and in 1961 he completed his M.A. degree. Mr. Mooney never went to high school. Upon being discharged from the Army after the Korean War, he took his G.E.D. test, passed it and then entered the University. One statement he mentioned while taking chemistry at the University was, If I can pass this chemistry I can do anything in life. While he was in the Army he was given an aptitude test and was told that his main in- terest seemed to lie in music, but that he could achieve just about anything he wanted to do. Having lived on a farm all of his life he decided he would like to teach Vocational Agriculture. He has enjoyed many wonderful years at Woodland High School and has seen many fine young men and women grow up and become good citizens in the community. He has three former students who have become Vocational Agriculture Instructors and many of his students are now occupied in Agri-business in this community and many others. In 1970 he was made an Honorary State FFA Farmer and in 1977 he received the Distinguished Service Award from Missouri Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association. 3 STAFF MESSAGE We, the 1980-81 Journalism Staff are proud to present to you the completed version of our efforts — the 1981 Cardinal. This year there were changes in the format of the class. In years past the class has been voluntary and no credit has been given. This year the class was offered as lournalism with one hour credit. To also help change things we acquired a new teacher, Mrs. Alice Ireland. In addition to creating this yearbook we also had classroom work, and published a monthly newspaper titled the Cardinal Flyer. Perhaps the thought of our grade made us work harder. We learned to work on a deadline, under pressure, and how to work together as a class. In the beginning, planning, design, layout, photography, and other aspects held lit- tle meaning for us until we got into the actual preparation and production of the copy for this book. Little did we realize that so many details needed such meticulous attention. We learned to take responsibility upon ourselves. Every member of the staff has learned to work with you, the students and faculty, because it isn't only the staff that makes the yearbook. Without you we wouldn't have anything to put in the yearbook. The future is uncertain for all of us, but what we will have for tomorrow are our memories of today. We hope this issue of the Cardinal will hold special memories for every one of you - especially the Senior Class of 1981 - and that it will become more cherished in years to come. With hopes of reaching our goal, which is your approval, we give to you the fruits of our efforts. We hope you enjoy it. — 1980-81 lournalism Staff 4 AcihvU dStwtiCH u RICHARD TROUT Superintendent of Woodland Schools Superintendent's Message — 1981 Cardinal Yearbook What Next? When your great-grandfather was small, there were no telephones, no automobiles, no buses. There was no radio or television, and the airplane was considered impossible. We now have all sorts of inventions. We have learned how to handle different diseases and how to prevent them. Man has even taken his first trip to the moon. What Next? Our greatest need is to develop health, wealth and happiness for all people. If we could just find some way to teach people to use common sense just think how much happier this world would be. You have been given a bag of tools, A formless rock and a bag of rules, and each must make, before life has flown, A stumbling block, or a stepping stone. It is my hope that your education assists you in obtaining the tools necessary to build stepping stones toward being successful in life. — Richard Trout BOARD OF EDUCATION L to R Jack Leslie. Jr., Don lames, Kelly Francis. Arvil McIntosh, |o Ann Shrum. Robert W Cray (President) 6 H.S. PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE To the Graduate — To the Woodland Student Body and especially the graduating class of '81. Once again it has been my pleasure to have the opportunity to work with you. As we enter the decade of the I980's I think it would benefit us to do our best in relation to all life and especially our educational pursuits. Quality education in the 1980's is the most significant issue confronting youth. They are entering a tight job market which demands the creative use of intelligence in order to succeed. It is our job as educators to challenge the minds and make them produc- tive. It is your job as students to have the motivation and driving force that makes one successful. Together we will succeed in this endeavor — RonWene I RON WENE High School Principal MODEAN FILER High School Secretary H.S. SHAUN Shaun and I were very, very close. I learned a lot from her. She taught me how to laugh and cry, and how to live and smile. Shaun was a very dear person and she meant the world to me. Only God above knows how my heart and soul are torn apart by her death. But I have to go on with my life, as I know she would have wanted me to. I know she's not completely gone, for sometimes at night, when I am alone, I start to miss her so bad, I cry. Then I feel her spirit with me, and I hear her say, SHHH! I haven't left you completely! Darlene Shaun Climer, I know you haven't completely left me, but it is hard to keep on because I miss you a lot! But I can hang on to the thought that some- day I'll join you and we'll be together forever and ever. And neither one of us will hurt again! Oh! how I long for that day! TURNER, ... We will Remember You Always! The Joy of Unselfish Giving Time is not measured by the years that you live But by the deeds that you do and the joy that you give — And each day as it comes brings a chance to each one To love to the fullest, leaving nothing undone That would brighten the life or lighten the load Of some weary traveler lost on Life's Road — So what does it matter how long we may live If as long as we live we unselfishly give. 65 Helen Steiner Rice BAND OFFICERS Soni FHawn Kim Gray Mark Devenport Shannon Gaines Craig Yount CHORUS One-two ready go' Don't I look a wreck' 67 BAND 'N CHORUS SNAPS Beat those drums' Soloists and ensemblists who attended music contest at SEMO University Cheer up Candi!!
