Except for two periods of a few years each during which he worked in the Leopold school system, Mr. Elfrink has devoted most of his time to teaching in our high school. He was high school principal from April. 1968 through the 1972 school year but enjoys the closer contact with students which classroom teaching affords. During many of his years at Woodland, Mr. Elfrink was either advisor or co-advisor to the yearbook staff, and from his experience, he has a wealth of ideas and information to share. Some of our parents were students in his classes during his first years of teaching. His loyalty to his students is evidenced by his reaction when we asked about their behavior in high school. He smiled and said that they were a lot like we are now. For his resourcefulness and interest, his sincerity, honesty, and loyalty, and for his devotion to the teaching profession, we, the staff of the 1979 Car- dinal. have chosen to dedicate this yearbook to MR. RICHARD ELFRINK 3 A ' STAFF MESSAGE With mixed emotions we present the 1978-79 edition of the Woodland Cardinal. We are sad when we realize that for most of us it is a chronicle of our last year at Wood- land School. We are proud that we have had a part in all the work that went into the book. The expe- rience we gained from our participation has enriched us. Planning, design, layout, photography, and other aspects held little meaning for us until we got into the actual preparation and production of the copy for this book. Little did we realize that so many details needed such meticulous attention. We trust you will enjoy our efforts, and believe you will appreciate the changes in for- mat which we have provided. The 1979 Cardinal Staff Ti 0 ‘ r. .yJ - 4 ADMINISTRATION Tenderly now let all men turn to the earth Nancy Newhall RICHARD TROUT Superintendent of Woodland Schools Superintendent’s Message The experience we gather from books is labeled “Knowledge.” The experience we gain from actual life is called “Wisdom.” One must possess both Knowledge and Wisdom, to be a success in life. It is my hope that you will continue your education through every resource at your command. The need for more and more education is an increasing necessity for one who hopes to compete success- fully in today’s technical age. “Knowledge comes by Study; Wisdom by Experience.” — Richard Trout Board of Education H.S. Principal’s Message To the Woodland student body, and especially the graduating Seniors of '79, 1 express my appreciation for having had the opportunity to work with you. I am sure as the years pass us by and you reflect back most of your thoughts will be of a positive nature. I feel the group of graduates has unlimited poten- tial. however. I think it would be beneficial to establish a few general concepts about the journey you now start. These are that life is a continuous cycle of peaks and valleys, that the ability to do good in a particular area is not as important as the desire to perform at top efficiency, and that you are important and can be a contributing factor to progress. I know that the Woodland educational staff has made your next challenge eas- ier by exposing you to consistent experiences. I can only hope that in a small way I have helped in your development to prepare you to make your decisions of the future easier. - Ron Wene RON WENE Principal Woodland High School MODEAN FILER High School Secretary PAM WESBECHER Office Assistant 7 1979 Retirees 9 m L. to R. — Lester Barks, retiring Board Member; Marie Tippett, retiring Elementary Teacher; Luther Myers, retiring Bus Driver; Earl Lutes, retiring Board Member. “Old Coaches never die — they still visit the gym From Banquet Circuit To Household Chores — Work is never done. Every cubic inch of space is a miracle. Walt Whitman LARRY SHOAF Principal Woodland Elementary School PAT LUKEFAHR Elementary Secretary Elementary Principal’s Message In reflecting over this year, there have been some great accomplishments at Woodland Elementary. We started our new math program, we raised our aver- age daily attendance two per cent, we started Parent-Teacher conferences, and we started aligning our objectives with BEST objectives. These accomplish- ments are designed to give our students the highest quality education available. The question one must ask himself is, “To what degree did I take advantage of this?” If an individual cannot answer with certainty that he used these opportu- nities to help himself become a better student, then I would challenge him to set new goals for the future. I would extend a challenge to students and parents to join together with us, and we will continue to offer our students the best educational opportunity availa- ble. — Larry Shoaf SHIRLEY DA VAULT Office Assistant DENNIS WHEELER Counselor Teacher Assistants Aides Picture Not Available SABRINA BOLLINGER JANET FORTENBERRY SHEILA HOPKINS Picture Not Available RACHEL WINCHESTER JEANIE RUNNELS WANDA FRANCIS AH eyes are on the performers as elementary pupils enjoy a skate-board demonstration during an assembly in the gym. 109 SIXTH GRADE Rodney Abernathy Stacey Ac up Donna Allmon Cynthia Anderson John Angel Albert Arnzen Leonard Barnhart Stanly Beel Dennis Besher Richard Biggs Kim Bollinger Melissa Bright Frank Brown Connie Busby Mike Chronister Brad Collins Tharon Cowell Rebecca Crader Bobby Crites Thomas Cureton Richard Fields Ronnie Fisher Joey Fluchel Hester Fox Randy Freemen Kelly Frymire Lana Gipson Mitchell Goskie Gary Gromer John Hadley Jeanna Hahs Tami Hahs P.
