THE CARDINAL OF 1962 WOODLAND R-4 SCHOOLS LUTESVILLE, MISSOURI. TABLE OF CONTENTS DEDICATION SCHOOL BUILDINGS ADMINISTRATION FACULTY SENIORS JUNIORS SOPHOMORES FRESHMEN ORGANIZATIONS SPORTS FAVORITES JUNIOR HIGH ELEMENTARY ADVERTISERS DEDICATION We, the 1962 Cardinal Staff, dedicate this annual to one who has contributed much to the Woodland School System for several years. We have seen Principals come and go to and from our school but never have we met one who is so faithful to the Woodland Schools as Cuba Clubb Elementary Principal OTHER BUILDINGS Top: Music Building Center: Junior High Building which also houses the Home Economics Department. Bottom: Marble Hill Grade Building which houses the First and Second Grades. NEW SCHOOL FACILITIES iff sr.-- With work scheduled to begin this summer (1962), it is antici- pated that the new school plant will be completed so that it can be put into use by the fall of 1963. Grades 3,4,5, and 6 are making use of the building now located on the new school site. The Junior High and High School classes will be relocated there when the entire building program is finished. Flag raising program at new school. Playground facilities. CLdm mist uitum SUPERINTENDENT’S Mr. Claude Stone, Superintendent Greetings again from the same old office. And again the Cardinal Staff carries on from the same old headquarters. Some unforeseen delays and perhaps some unavoid- able circumstances have delayed the construction of our new buildings, which at this time last year we hoped would by now be well under construction. However, we expect the Yearbook staff to continue the all-out effort to provide us with an excellent book. After all, any product can be only as good as the skill of the hands that shape it, regardless of the setting or physical surroundings. Although we are still looking forward to our new buildings with eager anticipa- tion, yet we cannot afford to sit back and wait for the more favorable surroundings. The success of any enterprise, be it the publishing of a school annual or the operation of the whole school, for that matter, depends a great deal more upon the quality of the people involved than upon the physical plant. So, forgetting our dreams of a new building, now that they are about to become reality, let us have another fine Cardinal- - and another good school term. I --Claude Stone A native of Bollinger County, Mr. Stone received the AA degree at Will Mayfield College in 1929. His B.S. degree was awarded in 1937 at Southeast Mo. State College, and an M. Ed. degree was earned in 1947 at Missouri U. Mr. Stone served as President of the Southeast Missouri Teachers Associa- tion for the 1961-1962 term. SCHOOL PRINCIPALS As you read and look at the Cardinal in the years to come, may the memories of Woodland School brighten your journey through life. It is my wish for you that you will be conceited enough to believe in yourself, humble enough to realize your own weaknesses, and intelligent enough to do something about them. I want to tell you how fortu- nate I think I have been to be your principal during the school year of 1961-1962. --James M. Rahm JAMES M. GROUP The C.O.E. group is placed in this section because nearly half of these students are teacher aides or part-time school office workers. The students above are learning a paticular job through a type of apprentice-ship training program. This program provides an introduction to the problems of a particular job and gives the students an opportunity to learn something of the job under actual working conditions. Jobs represented, other than teaching and secretarial, are banking, electrical and electronics repair, retail sales, meat cutting, and service station work. Only a few snapshots were made available for yearbook use after the graduates returned from their tour of Washington, New York, and other points of interest. It will take a senior who made the trip to fill in the details of the paste-up above. Apparently Mr. Rahm shaved on the trip, Lester Shell made friends with the President's dummy, the Lincoln Memorial was included in the tour, there was some huggin' goin’ on, and Gary Lee provided a spark of enjoyment for the tourists. Virginia Stratton and Margaret Devore mix it up at the F.H.A. Bunking Party. Kay VanMatre rides the senior float with a Senior Trip theme, as the senior's Carnival Queen candidate. Teacher's Pet? VALEDICTORIAN Ronald Bess Ronnie held his scholastic standing through High School for the honor of Valedictorian which he truly deserves. He was a member of the Volleyball and Basketball teams, Beta Club, and was a class officer during most of the years. SALUTATORIAN William Rhodes Bill is Salutatorian of the 1962 Graduating Class. Besides his high scholastic standing he was a member of the Beta Club and won the Industrial Art award for three consecutive years. SENIOR PERSONALITIES LINDA GREEN Known around school as Linda Lou, Linda has a high scholastic average in the class. She has one of the best personalities in school and is always willing to help others in need and is a very enjoyable person to know. She is a member of all school organizations and active in all of them. WILLIAM RHODES Bill, a very good scholar, is most sincere in whatever he strives to do. He was a friend to every schoolmate and is well liked by all those who have the pleasure of knowing him. RONALD BESS Besides being the highest rating Senior, Ronnie possesses one of the most kind and friendly personalities. Ronnie was in school activities and held a COE job. Because of his height and ability he contributed much to our Volleyball and Basket- ball teams during his high school career. PATRICIA WINCHESTER Tippy, as we know her, also has a high scholastic average and a winning personality here at Woodland High. She has been active in all school organizations and contributed to each one. MARY ENGLEHART As Editor of the 1962 Cardinal, Mary has been very energetic and has shown a great deal of talent. Mary has participated in all school activities and organiza- tions and to each has brought enthusiasm, sincerity, ability and a charming personality. RODGER BREWEN Rodger came to Woodland High his Sophomore year and made friends and was soon playing an active part here in W.H.S. This year Rodger was President of the Student Body and a hard working COE student. Next year they will have an opportunity to sit and eat with the seniors and faculty members. Carolyn Cook rode the Sophomore float as the Carnival Queen candidate. Bob Deck was her escort. THE WOODLAND BAND The Woodland Band, under the direction of Mr. Darrol Coombes, was a popular asset to our school during the year. The members presented concerts, appeared in parades, and took part in programs and assemblies throughout the year. New music which the band presented was received enthusiastically. The financial strain imposed by the uniform debt has finally been removed, and continued improvement and growth on the part of the band should be noticeable. The Band takes part in the Carnival Parade. This eagerly-waited-for event is accompanied by an afternoon holiday from classes. A section of the band provided the background music and other selections at the coronation program for Cardinal Queen. A program of music with Christmas theme is pre- sented at the pre-holiday party. Students look on at Awards Assembly on last day of school. Beta Club members are introduced. Hustle and bustle at Christmas Party. Down -- but by no means Out! JR-SR. BANQUET SCENES The Junior Class entertained the Seniors, Faculty, and Board Members at the annual Banquet. They chose the theme Roman Holiday and carried it out in good style. The few scenes shown here and elsewhere in these pages represent only a small part of the entertaining evening. Dancing was once again a feature of the Banquet, after a period of several years during which dancing was not permitted. Activities of the Junior High Student Council during the 1961-62 school year included Student Court, a Variety Show, and a Junior High Party and Fashion Show. Money-making projects enabled the Student Council to purchase a globe and to buy honor and citizenship pins which were awarded to deserving students. The Student Council Variety Show gave the members an opportunity to display talent and ingenuity. The program was presented as an afternoon assembly to the Junior High and High School students, and was repeated in the evening for the public. Apparent lack of material for the program necessitated considerable ad-libbing on the part of the cast. The Junior High Party and Fashion Show held toward the end of the year proved to be a good form of entertainment for the students and their families. JUNIOR HIGH BASKETBALL B” TEAM The Junior High Basketball Teams provided many moments of good athletic entertainment, and gave every indication that with continued practice and experience these players would prove to be valuable additions to the Woodland High Cardinals in years to come.
