THE 1957-58 CARDINAL FOREWORD With this issue of the CARDINAL YEARBOOK, we, the Cardinal Staff, hope that we have selected the pictures and events that will make all receivers of the Cardinal recall pleasant memories of their experiences at Woodland High School. The 1957-58 Cardinal Staff DEDICATION For HIS patience and consideration toward the students; For HER constant effort through the Homemaking Department to improve our school; For the many things THEY have taught us in their three years of teaching in Lutesville; To our Principal and his wife, MR. and MRS. HAROLD RALPH, we dedicate this 1957-58 Cardinal. WOODLAND HIGH SCHOOL WOODLAND GRADE SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGE This year past has been one of great scientific developments and achievements. Sputnik I ushered us into a new era. The alert citizenry began to realize im- mediately that many methods and even theories are inadequate to meet the challenge that lies ahead. Frustration and fear siezed the hearts and minds of the weak and undeceming and those who live on the hopes, successes, and dreams of by-gone days. Doom and despair is always their cry. But I believe the future is bright for those whose faith in their fellow man and God are strong and unfaltering. Many significant changes have come about in our School District this past year; changes that will help every student to face the future better prepared to meet the challenges, the problems, as well as the achievements that lie ahead. We have seen only the beginning of what can be a strong and effective school that will meet the needs of all the students in our District. As all other worthwhile accomplishments, a good school program requires untiring work on the part of all the people who have hopes and plans for tomorrow. Our future can shine no more brilliantly than the oil with which we prepare our youth today. Sincerely yours, THOMAS E. SMITH MR, HAROLD RALPH MR, CUBA CLUBB High School Principal Elementary Principal BOARD OF EDUCATION SEATED: Pervis Lukefahr; H. C. Linville; T. R. Lewis; John Dale Chandler STANDING: L. L. Bridges, Jr. Tom Pridy MRS. ILA MARSHALL, R. N. MRS. JOYCE BURK, Secretary The Bollinger County Nursing Service began in September, 1957. The four District Superintendents and the County Superintendent decided on a plan for one nurse to service the four schools. Mrs. Ila Marshall, R. N., was employed. She organized polio clinics and clinics of typhoid, dyptheria, and small pox. With the help of local Doctors, thousands of shots were given. An audiometer was loaned the schools by Division of Health. The ears of all the school children, many non- school children, and the teachers were checked. Several cases with degrees of deafness and partially sighted were discovered and referred to parents for correction. In January, the Nursing Service coordinated with the Division of Health of Missouri. Now we have the Bollinger County Nursing Service with the office located in the elementary building of District R-4. We hope the nursing service will grow until we have a complete health service for the County. MARK BLANKENSHIP B.M. ED. MILDRED CHANDLER B.S., M. S. RETA CRENSHAW B. S. ED. Few people during such a short lifetime have made more friends, helped more people, or have served the people of a school and community better than Mr. Wells. He earned a place in the hearts of his students and associatesasa scholar and a gentleman, a friend and a guide. His opinion, sound and reliable judgement, and leadership was sought by many people both profes- sionally and as a lay citizen. Honesty, sincerity, fairplay, and faith in his fellow man and in God are characteristics and virtues for which all of us will long remember Mr. Wells. Even though Mr. Wells will be physically no longer with us, his advice will long be remembered and his direction of leadership followed.
