BA 5KE'TBf-X .LL 1954 V V V Picked by experts to finish a strong third behind Kalama and Castle Rock in northern division Trico League play, this year's varsity basket- ball team, after a strong pre-season showing, dropped two crucial tilts to LaCenter in league play and in spite of giving the top seeded teams a scare, wound up tied for last place. The turning point of Beaver fortunes was the first game with the Wildcats, who aoed out Woodland 32 to 28 in the final seconds of a torrid game in which the opponents' ball control drove the Beavers mad. In the return game the Beavers just could not seem to get started. Two games remain outstanding in the minds of players and fans, alike. These were the two final games of the season, at home against the Rockets, and the wind up with Kalama on their court. Both were close contests, and fans agreed that had Woodland shown such class earlier in league play, the final standings would have been decidedly different. When post season all-stars were picked Woodland landed Orv Seifert and Bill Orth on the Trico second team and Rich Kroon was given honor- able mention. Four of the five regular starters will graduate plus one more from the second five. Filling the shoes of Bill Orth, Rich Kroon, Ray Dett- loff, Jim Lefever and Don Keith will be no easy task. Crv Seifert, only starting five holdover, ought to repeat in his senior year. Reserves Dick Burns, Tim Peterson, Charlie Blue, Ralph Givens, Ron Nelson and Danny Steph will find competition in starting assignments from some of these HBH squad men: Arnie Albrecht, Gary Balch, Danny Balch, Nick Chester, Don Woodward, Jim Blair, Bob Bays, Sam Dyer and Randall Brown, VVV Woodland Sl vs. Stevenson Woodland hh vs. Evergreen Woodland h5 vs. Washougal Woodland 51 vs. Stevenson Woodland 77 vs. Toledo Woodland hS vs. Evergreen Woodland Sl vs. Ridgefield Woodland S2 vs. Deaf School Woodland 60 vs. Ridgefield Woodland 35 vs, Deaf School -:Woodland 28 vs, LaCenter kwoodland 53 vs. Cathlamet 'kWoodland h2 vs. Castle Rock iwoodland 32 vs. Kalama iwoodland 33 vs, LaCenter nWoodland h8 vs. Cathlamet iwoodland 38 vs , Castle Rock tWoodland 21 vs, Kalama k League game

'JQCDTBALL 1953 V V V On November 13, 19Sh, thirteen years later, the Beavers once more won a football game from neighboring Kalama. Probably no other athletic victory this year was so sweet, In addition to the memorable 9 to 7 victory over the Chinooks, the Lemiere-Cheatley coaching combination produced the highest Beaver Trico League standing in thirteen long years as season's end found Woodland in second place with six wins and three losses. The record at the bottom of the page speaks for itself, except in the instance of the game at Castle Rock, That night the Beavers came out on top in every statistical department except that of the final score. Doped to take the in-and-out Rockets, the Beavers seemingly could not do the right things at the right time. So the northern enemy won. Turning point in the season was the upset win over Deaf School. Entering the fray two touchdown underdogs, the Beavers, after stunning defeats at the hands of Stevenson and White Salmon, came back to best the Terriers by one touchdown. From that point on a feeling of .confi- dence dominated every game. Rich Kroon and Tim Peterson were selected to the All Trico first team and Ward Hardy and Jim Lefever made the All-Trico second team. Bill Orth, vastly underrated by opponents all season, Bob Bays and Dade De Hou: received honorable mention. Missing from next yearfs squad will be Kroon, elected to All -State alternate status, at Quarterback, Bill Orth at fullback, Jim Lefever Ray Dettloff and Dave Kingen at the ends, Ward Hardy at tackle and John Jolly at guard. Replacing these seven stalwarts will confront headcoach Lemiere and assistant Cheatley with a sizable problem next year. A husky crew of frosh who learned their fundamentals under junior high coach Blauman will be out to make competition keen for holdover regulars.
