During his administration he has been responsible for the renaissance of a truly-all-school music program, the benefits of which have extended throughout the community. He has also done much toward plans for the new school building, lights for the football field, and has supported other civic and educational improve- ments. In the spring of 1946, a fire in the shop building caused some damage which affected classes in the fall. Repairs are now completed and the schedule is back to normal. Mr. Stroud has returned to the principalship at Woodland 'after four years in the army. He has done much this year in improving social and educational school activities. He has been advisor to the school publications, the Beavertonian and the Vfocowa, and to the Student Council and the Associated Student Body, the student governing bodies of the school. His work with all of these has been outstanding. The Student Council has assumed more and more responsibility in shaping affairs of the students. Clubs have made progress in the year also. Booster dances were given by different organizations after home basketball games. Proceeds went to the general student body fund. Mrs. Marjorie Kurth Dawson B. A. I-IRNIE GARVIN DOBLE HOLT 'Blackieu League 1. horus 1, 2, 3, 4: 4: Pep Club 3, 4: Song 3 Wocowa 4: Class TOM WIRE Class History On a brisk September morning in 1935,lten of this year's graduating class began their formal education in Woodland Grade School. They were: Mary jean Blue, Bill Blum, Lavonne Brewster, May Davis, Barbara Hobert, Donna jones, Gene Stanley, Estelle Thiel, Keith Walbridge, and june Wills. In the freshman year students from Yale, Ariel, Green Mountain, Clover Valley, and other schools joined the group. The Beaver Tracks, the junior high paper, edited by Anne Insell and Keith Walbridge, was our main achievement of the freshman year. The highlight of our sophomore year was the initiation by the fiendish-er, that is -sweet, kind, and lovable juniors. At the dance that evening a prize fa bag of pea- nutsj was presented to Anne Insell for her Santa Claus costume. We ordered our class sweaters in forest green with a forest green and white letter and numerals. In our junior year we avenged ourselves to a certain degree when we initiated the sophomores. Later we ordered class rings and pins from Master Engravers. june Mad, a three-act comedy, was presented as the class play. Those in the cast were as follows: Marilyn Schulz, Henry Turpin, Lavonne Brewster, Tom Wire, Charlotte Chapman, Keith Walbridge, Donna jones, George Manfredi, jerry Hiester, Bill Stuart, Marian Mulkey, Mary jean Blue, and Arthur Risley. The production staff consisted of Patsy Clark, Estelle Thiel, Anne Insell, and jim Thomas. Our final success of the year was the annual junior-Senior Prom. The decoration committee, headed by Patsy Clark and George Manfredi, succeeded in carrying out to perfection the unusual and beautiful theme of an old Dutch garden, complete with tulip beds, dikes, and a wind- mill that worked! Music was furnished by the Winlock Cardinals dance band. During our senior year we kept up our good record by giving a senior ball which was comparable to our junior prom. The couples attending danced in a star-studded gymnasium to the same band which played for our junior prom. The theme, Moon Dreams, was carried out by silver stars and a big, yellow moon that winked at the dancers. Our senior play, Kind Lady, was another big success for the class. The production of the annual was a class project and kept us pretty busy. We finished the year by sneaking to Offut Lake, where a wonderful day was spent by the entire class. Now we are leaving Woodland High, as we have finished this part of our educa- tion. We owe a great deal to our teachers and parents who have helped us this far. As we go on, we hope we can repay them by proving that we can succeed. However, as we leave Woodland and go out in the world we take with us cherished memories of all the good times we have had during our school years. Mr. Fluke, Mrs. W'illiams Using a Hallowe'en theme, the freshmen started the year's activities by giving a party for the eighth grade. Later another party was given in honor of St. Valentine's day. A false ceiling of all colors was used and a nice evening was enjoyed by all. The class has chosen the colors kelly green and White for class sweaters. They will be ordered early next fall. The ninth grade Red Devils really amazed the students, community, and every- one in the Trico League during basketball season this year. They played a lot of the second string games and won most of them. The freshmen have enjoyed an unforgettable year and are looking forward to three equally successful years in high school. Dawson, Mr. Stroud The Freshman class honored us with a party. The little gym was nicely decorated and everyone enjoyed themselves. During football season the seventh and eighth grades played and the eighth grade won, 6-O. At a seventh-eighth grade Halloween party, cider and doughnuts were served and dancing and games were enjoyed by all. In November the Audubon Bird Club was organized. Some students weren't in- terested as much as they thought and it was reorganized in February. The club went on a field trip in April to study birds and animals. M The eighth grade boys played several basketball games with neighboring schools. Two games with LaCenter and two games with Kalama all ended in defeat for the eighth grade. jerry Hanft, the coach, did a very good job of coaching the team. In April, we held a party in the gym. Refreshments were served. Dancing was the main amusement of the evening and everyone enjoyed themselves. S E V E N T H G R A D E J At the first of the year there were sixty-three pupils in the seventh grade. Forty- two of them came from the Woodland Grade School and others entered from up-river schools and other districts. The officers elected for the year were: President ..,.........,.... ..,...... J anie Thomas Secretary .,...... ..,.............,,.., P aul Blair Vice-President .................,...,.. Don Meeker Treasurer ........................ Harley Baumgart The students who worked on the Beavertonian were Shirley Thunder and jasper Little. The representative for the School Improvement Committee was Mitzy Driver. The first seventh grade party was a Hallowe'en party on the 31st of October. The next party was a Valentine party held on February 12. They played games, danced, and had refreshments. When the school had its annual Curtis Publishing Company magazine sale, two seventh grade pupils won the top awards. Fred I-lyke won the first prize, a table model radio, and jasper Little also received a certificate of outstanding achievement. One football game was played with the eighth grade. Out of six basketball games played, three were lost. The games were played with Kalama, LaCenter, Clover Val- ley, and the eighth grade. Marjorie Jensen, a seventh grader, was one of the junior high yell leaders. She and Wayne Stoliby went to Vanport with some upper classmen to see how they con- ducted their activities. Stroud Joan Rarnsower The student body activities started the year under the direction of the student council composed of the above officers. Under the leadership of these officers the student body had a very profitable year. The deficiency in the student body fund was helped considerably by booster dances given after home basketball games and also by the annual Curtis Publishing Company magazine subscription drive. A total of approximately .8815 worth of subscriptions were sold, which enabled the student body to purchase a public address system and a record player. This was used at several dances and assembly programs. The student council members joined the organization known as the National As- sociation of Student Councils, from which they received pins and arm bands. Some of the projects of the student council and the student body during the year were: The repairing and restoration of the alumni pictures, the putting up of an Honor Roll plaque, and the production of a skit entitled See Yourself as Others See You, which was a characterization of students and teachers and their not too agreeable traits. The student body finished another active year by electing next year's officers. It was an interesting visit and proved helpful in gaining new and better ideas. The hot dog sales at football games were continued this year and they turned out very well. The traditional St. Patrick's day Tolo Dance was held on March 14, and many couples danced to the Winlock High School Band, in the beautifully decorated audi- torium. However, too much praise cannot be heaped upon the heads of the faithful, who, night after night, worked long hours in writing and producing the pictures used in this year book. BAND IN ACTION The all-school band, under Mr. Fluke's able direction, has made great progress in two short years. There are 40 members, most of whom are junior high students. Organ- ization began early in September and the members began immediately to practice music and marching. They played for three home football games and one at Ridge- field. At the Castle Rock game, Mae Swenson, the drum majorette, led the band in a drill and march on the field, which is pictured above. The band took part in the Christmas program by playing several carols. A pep band was organized during basketball season and it played for the last home game. The band played in the all-music assembly in March. They went to Vancouver to participate in a contest on April 26. A clarinet trio, composed of seventh graders, received a rating of excellent at a music meet in Shelton. To end the year, the band played many numbers for the Spring Music Festival. Several benefits have been given to raise money for uniforms. At the Lions benefit show on March 28, the band performed for a large audience. About one-half of the money necessary for the uniforms was raised by the end of the year. S E X E T T E Chorus The High School Chorus, under the ahle direction of Mr. John Fluke, has prog- ressed rapidly this year. The first appearance of the chorus was at the annual Christmas program held on Decemher 18. On April 12 it took part in the Southwest Washington Music Meet. They also took part in the Spring Festival. It is hoped that next year's chorus will continue the excellent work achieved this year. The Girls Sextette The sextette made many puhlic appearances throughout the year, including per- formances at Rainhow, lfasu-rn Star and Masonic affairs, the Senior Ball, the Women's Club, junior and Senior plays, and the Cowlitz County Teachers' Convention. However, the groups greatest thrill came when they entered the contest for solo and small enseinhle guiups at Shvlton, X'if'asliington, in March. The girls returned with beaming faces and tl rating ot' excellent plus. Four memhers of the sextette. Patsy Clark, Anne lnsell, Shirley Thomas, and Betty W'icker, will graduate this year. The two junior memhers, Bonnie Treick and Florestine Simonis, will form the nucleus for next years sextette. The purpose of the patrol was to safeguard students as they crossed intersec- tions and streets. jerry Forslund was elected captain, with Paul Blair and Franklin Williams as lieutenants. There were twenty-one members. After much shuffling and reshuffling of the squad, the second semester was started with Wayne Stoliby as captain and Paul Blair and Milo Blair as lieutenants. The rest of the squad included Darwin Nelson, Wayne Bozarth, Ronnie Neil, jerry Forslund, Don Meeker, Mark Tomlinson, Bim Swenson, Alvin Babcock, Don Sears, Don Peterson, jim Darr, Pete Holloway, Harry Dehning, Walt Warren and Gene Watson. The patrol was sponsored by the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. These organizations purchased raincoats, hats and belts for the patrol to wear. They also furnished several evenings of entertainment, including basketball games, shows, and lunches. Mr. Hanft helped plan the entertainment. A field trip promised for Christmas vacation was put off until April. Many members have made bird houses and feeding stations this year. Begun as a separate club for the eighth grade and the seventh grade, an unwieldy membership caused a drastic reduction in members and a combining of both eighth and seventh grades into one unit. George Manfredi was chosen by his teammates as inspirational player for the sea- son of '46, jerry Hiester was point maker for the team. He scored 55 points during the season. Woodland, Wash. The editor and advisor would like to take this opportunity to thank all the persons named and anonymous, without whose help the publishing of this year's Wocowa would have been well-nigh impossible. Mrs. Dawson, art supervisor for the Woodland schools, directed and aided in the drawing of the novel student life scenes shown on various pages. Without the patient, skilled work of the Camas Post-Record this book just would not have been. The hard, tedious work done by Bill Blum and his helpers in getting the pictures ready helped make this year's annual a success. Several business firms, for reasons of their own, asked that their names be omitted from any advertising. They sent contributions, instead. To each and every one of them, our sincere thanks. To each student who got his assignment in on time, ready to be printed, to each student who sent in snapshots for us to useg to each individual senior who went out and got advertisementsg to everyone who in one way or another helped make this year's Wocowa a success, we say, Thanks a lot.
