THE CLASS HISTORY By Mary Bryant and Pearl Piper We the class of 1949 started school September 13, 1937 with Mrs. Josie Watrous as our teacher. There were 14 of the 25 graduating tonight who started together. They are Joyce Henny, Phyllis Green, Pearl Piper, Rose Duits, Jo Anne Smith, Janice Bates, Roberta Manker, Eleanor Bird, Arleta Jordan, Jeanne Fisher, Glendon Curtis, Paul Brodbeck, R. Jay Kussmaul, and Ailene Gober. Ailene left us and came back in the ninth grade. One of the high lights of the year was the Rythm Band directed by Gordon Williams. We entered the second grade in 1938 and Mrs. Mildred Nowicke was our teacher. That year we took a trip to Potter's Park in Lansing. In the third grade Ernestine Monasmith joined our class. She left us again at the end of the year and came back in the fifth grade. Our class was separated that year. Part of us were in Mrs. Hilda B -ss's room and part of us in Mrs. Mildred Nowicke's. In the fourth grade we were in Mrs. Hilda Boss's room. Joyce Smith joined our class that year. We enjoyed the privilege of a trip to Ford's Green Field Village, Detroit that year. In the fifth and sixth grades Mrs. Arlie Spindler was our teacher. Those years Arnold Daniels, Joyce Demond, and Mary Bryant joined our class. The first part of the seventh grade Mrs. Margaret Estep was our teacher but we had Mrs. Watrous for the remainder of the year as Mrs. Estep started teaching high school. Richard Engle joined our ranks that year. During our eighth grade many changes came about. We had desks in the S. H. and lockers in the hall. We had Mrs. Watrous, Mrs. Miller, and Miss Shewchuk for our teachers. We were beginning to be- come adjusted to our oncoming high school years. ' In the ninth grade we went to the Capitol of Lansing. Duane Clum became one of us that year along with Joyce Kent. We were initiated that year and for initiation the girls wore Men's long legged under- wear, plough shoes and had their hair in pin curls. The boys had to dress like girls and everyone of us had to carry a bushel basket to carry upperclassmen books in. During our sophomore year Joy Hample and Don Shook made their appearance. We had a hayride and Hallowe'en party at Phyllis Green's barn. It was a memorable night because of a terrific rain storm. We served at the Junior and Senior banquet and had to dress as pirates. While we were Juniors Rose Mary Daggett became a member of the class. We put on the Junior and Senior banquet with Star Dust , as our theme. Our Junior play was Cash and Carrie . We had be- gun to make money for our Senior trip by selling candy, pop and popcorn, during school and at Basketball games. Now we are Seniors. We have done many things to increase our treasure. We sold McCall's, Collier and other popular magazines, Christmas and all occassion cards, and wrapping paper, popcorn, candy ice cream, and school pencils. Lion's Club suppers were also put on by us. Our play was Huckle Berry Finn which was very successful. March 23 we went to Lansing. We took a very interesting tour through Fisher Body and spent the rest of the day in the Legislature. Our motto is With the ropes of the past let us ring the bells of the future 15
