Or its nose, in a book, to find them out. Things like the square root of Everest Or how many times Byron goes into Texas, Or whether the law of the excluded middle Applies west of the Rockies. For these And the like reasons, you have to go to school And study books and listen to what you are told, And sometimes try to remember. Though I don ' t know What you will do with the mean annual rainfall On Plato ' s Republic, or the calorie content Of the Diet of Worms, such things are said to be Good for you, and you will have to learn them In order to become one of the grown-ups Who sees invisible things neither steadily nor whole. But keeps gravely the grand confusion of the world Under his hat, which is where it belongs, And teaches small children to do this in their turn. No, he said, Dancing is a contact sport. Football is a collision sport. And he was right. 52 P N ■iSNlNlM - There are always these guys on the field with black and white shirts on who seem to be the only one who know what they ' re doing. All they have to do is blow a whistle and everybody stops. They must be police officers, and as far as 1 can tell, all their time is spent investigating wrecks. Football? Isn ' t that the funny game where a bunch of guys put on different colored suits and run around in a cow pasture to kick a funny shaped ball? They ' d like to kill each other just be- cause of that little piece of blowed up leather. EAT THOSE LIONS 54 % ::ip 6 1: - 7 1 1 ■ 8 1 ; ,| a I - ;„ .t f 82, f Vt-: if; Im ' .k - I 55 •w . Individual champions were Todd Kiopfenstein-long jump, Joel Smith-shot put, -and Mark Scheu- mann is discus. The season also mark- ed Mr. DeLong ' s first year as head coach. 65 It looked extremely rocky for the Woodlan team that day, At the very first practice, the coach was not so gay; The team was very young with not too many a veteran, And there weren ' t a lot of schools around that the Woodlan nine was better than. The calisthentics went real fine, but then the sprints got rough, It soon became apparent that the players weren ' t so tough; So after the lap around the field when all could barely stand. The coach just bowed his head and sighed, a losing season as at hand. The pitchers couldn ' t throw the ball, the batters couldn ' t hit it. The infield couldn ' t stop the thing, the outfield always missed it; And when the dust had lifted and three games had since occurred. The Warriors hadn ' t won a one - in fact, they ' d lost their third. Heritage beat the Warriors and Leo followed likewise. This much depressed the Woodlan team who was out to beat these guys; So on that stricken baseball team a death-like silence fell, The players had almost given up hope, the fans had ceased to yell. Then from the gladdened multitude went up a joyous cry, It rattled in the bleachers, it rumbled in the sky; It struck upon the schoolhouse and bounded in the flat. For Woodlan, mighty Woodlan, had won a game at that! The season now was over, and baseball was all done, The Warriors played all twenty -one games, and only four they won; The team will be back again next year with a more experienced squad, And they ' ll have a winning season, cause the odds won ' t be so odd. Steady my hurried pace with a vision of the eternal reach of time. Give me, amidst the confusion of my day, the calmness of the everlasting hills. Break the tension of my nerves and muscles with the soothing music of the singing streams that live in my memory. Help me to know the magical restoring power of sleep. Teach me the art of taking minute vacations, of slowing down to look at a flower, to chat with a friend, to pat a child, to read a few lines from a good book. Slow me down.
