Subjects discussed were college requirements; College Board ' s Scholastic Aptitude and Achievement Tests; study habits; grades and college reading; adjustment to col- lege life; the transition from high school to college; regional campuses; college terminology; and other information pertaining to colleges and universities. F.T.A. , Future Teachers of America, is a organization which encourages outstand- ing students to become teachers. Its purpose is to inform the student of the oppor- tunities in the teaching profession. The activities of the F.T.A. --College Prep Club include for the year the hosting of the fall District Two meeting held in November with over 300 students and teachers at- tending. Woodlan shared its officer installation ceremonies with the newly-formed Monroeville chapter in November. On Valentine ' s Day members of the club treated the teachers to candy and an apple. The F.T.A. --College Prep Club established a scholarship fund of $50.00 to be given to a deserving Senior applicant. In the spring the Senior members were allowed to observe and teach in an undergrad classroom. On May 12, thirty members celebrated gasbord. During the year the group visited Fort Wayne Comptometer School and International Business College and listened to speakers from Lincoln Life Insurance Company, International Business College, and General Electric. Evening in Old Rome Woodlan ' s newly organized, but unofficial, Latin Club had one big project this year. They presented a Roman banquet to the faculty and administration. The second year students and three of the first year students with high grades represented the patrician class of Old Rome. The remaining students were slaves and entertainers. Three of them, Sandy Smead, Diane Nelson, and Rhonda Stopher, were sold at a slave auction to different teachers who used Roman sesterces for money. After the auction the banquet began. The main course included a roasted pig which was carved by Mr. Lee and Mr. Pond. The evening ended with music, as the student slaves presented The Sound of Latin. •Mi 3a ¥ I •! k V LEADERSHIP CHARACTER AGRICULTURE COOPERATION SCHOLARSHIP CITIZENSHIP FIRST ROW: Mr. Fraser, D. Bandelier Mr. Hewlett The WOODLAN FUTURE FARMERS of America Chapter is the largest in the state of Indiana with a total of 107 members. It is also one of the most active chapters. The chapter participates in county, district, and national activities. Woodlan went all the way to the state contest in soil judging, finishing in the red ribbon group with Wayne Rekeweg being second highest in the state. The crop judging team finished second in the county with James Schaper being the highest individual. The team went to the district in March. The forestry and entomology teams were made up of younger members, but they still gave a fine snowing. The dairy and livestock teams have not met as of yet, but judging from their past work, they will probably do well. Woodlan took part in the district contests in April. The contests entered were parliamentary procedure, essay, speech, impromptu speaking, scrapbook, freshman creed, and talent . Eight of the chapter members have applied for Hoosier Farmer Degrees. They are Don Delagrange, Dennis Boterf, Dave Bandelier, James Schaper, John Pepe, Jim Lake, Doyle Allison, and Richard Ruppert. Woodland High School is proud of its F.F.A. Chapter because it involves personal development in such things as citizenship, leadership, and service to the community. V.-Pres. The monthly programs are planned and presented by the members. Difficult proofs, trick problems, and general discussions on math are a few of the topics. The club undertook two main projects. The first was a tour of the B. F. Goodrich plant, with special attention given to their math department. As a second project, the members bought two computers, one hand-operated, the other electric. The members had several enjoyable but taxing meetings programming and operating the computers. Advanced Science and Rocket Club FIRST ROW: Mr. Luther, T. Kammeyer, D. Beachy, K. Woodlan ' s Advanced Science and Rocket Club was formed from the students who have an interest in understand- ing and extending the principles of modern rocketry. Although the club works with only the scale replicas of larger models, the functions they perform in relation to the flying ability and stability are basically the same. The highest degree of safety is practiced, and the results of the experiments are satisfying. The members have learned to calculate the speed and height of different models using trigonometric functions. The Rocket Club, in the future, hopes to extend its bounds into the field of electronics. This year Woodlan had a special cheering block com- posed of girls from the G.A.A. The block consisted of only those girls interested in cheering instead of the entire student body as in past years. During the County Tourney, the girls wore blue and white vests and flowers. They als o used shakers to form letters in the cheerblock, and special motions were planned to accompany the cheers. The G.A.A. hopes that this idea will continue to grow in future years . Friendship— main objective k FIRST ROW: Miss Stieglitz, K. Plvunb, N. Dix, J. Lengacher, S. Linker, R. L. Honnann, C. They presented skits, attended district meetings and guided the smooth operation of the large organization. 53 The Future Homemakers of America is a very large and active club at Woodlan. This year with over 200 members enrolled, Woodlan ' s Chapter became the largest in the state of Indiana. The F.H.A. is an organization of girls interested in preparing themselves in the role of homemaking. The over-all objective of the organization is to aid individuals in improving personal, family, and community living both now and in the future. Each year, the members develop a program of work and service which will fulfill these ob- jectives. This year ' s program was based on helping each family member to recog- nize her abilities and to strive to full development of these abilities. In order to become anF.H.A. Honor Chapter, each local chapter also has to complete the two state objectives: Morals and Manners Count, and Good Family Relations through Communications. The F.H.A. ' ers experienced a busy year. In September, the Senior girls initiated the Freshmen into die organization at their Annual Kick-Off Party. In October the F.H.A. joined with the F.F.A. to produce a float Cook Those Cardinals which won second prize at the Homecoming. In November each girl and her father enjoyed Daddy-Date Nite, for which the theme was Pop is Tip-Top. During the Christmas Season the F.H.A. ' ers caroled at the County Old People ' s Home and Irene Byron Hospital and decorated the Christmas tree at Woodlan. With the beginning of the New Year, the new members were formally initiated as F.H.A. ' ers at a reception where they received their pins. Again combining with the F.F.A., the F.H.A. presented the Valentine Dance Dear Heart to the student body on February 5th. March found the girls taking a trip to Bowling Green State University. F.H.A. Week, April 3 to 9, was observed at Woodlan with a special F.H.A. showcase, presentation of a red rose to each teacher, and red and white day. As the school year came to a close, the F.H.A. ' ers became busier with preparations for the Rose Banquet and the style show presented each year in conjunction with the home economics classes. Home ' s Dearest Rose was the theme of the Rose Banquet at which the mothers and graduating Seniors were honored. Announcements of the officers -elect and the Senior award winner were made. June Rekeweg, this year ' s president, received the Senior award, the award to the Senior girl who has done the most for F.H.A. during her membership. Three girls attended the State F.H.A. Convention held in June: Darlene Yerks, Jackie Kennedy and Pat Love, the latter being a member of the All -State Chorus. June Rekeweg is the winner of the Senior F.H.A. award. She has been active all four years. She was a junior officer, a candidate for state officer, and this year ' s president. Much of success of F.H.A. this year is due to her hard work and careful planning. WoodlarVs student government m Woodlan ' s Student Council is composed of FIRST ROW: D. Allison, D. Bandelier, J. Brockman, L. Carpenter, E. Powell, K. Knoblauch, M. Pepe; SECOND ROW: Mr. Hewlett, Mr. Pond, P. Hoeppner, D. Delagrange, C. Hoeppner, Mrs. Weaver, Mr. Baulkey; THIRD ROW: M. Gerig, G. Eager, K. Litzenberg, R. Wilson, K. Kneubuhler, R. Hauke. The STUDENT COUNCIL is composed of the president, who is a senior, and sixteen voting members. Four delegates from each class are elected to serve for one year. The purpose of this organization is to develop attitudes of good citizenship; promote harmonious relations throughout the entire school; improve student-teacher rela- tionships; upgrade school morale; assist in the management of the school; allow for forum for student expression; provide orderly direction of school activities; sponsor assemblies; and promote the general welfare of the school. To be eligible for election, the student must submit his or her name with fifteen sig- natures, names of fellow class members approving his or her candidacy, to the STUDENT COUNCIL Election Committee. The election of the representatives from the sophomore, junior, and senior classes takes place during the last class meeting of the school year. There will be one week of active campaigning. The projects and activities completed by the STUDENT COUNCIL this year are the following: sponsoring the Homecoming, sending del egates to conventions and work- shops, posting the minutes on the bulletin board, maintaining the announcement board, promoting the annual Christmas Drive for a needy family, and sponsoring after-game dances and assemblies. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Lee Rick Smith- -Master of Ceremonies Readers of the Wills The Juniors did an outstanding job this year in honoring the Seniors at the Junior-Senior Prom. Program and decorations carried out the theme, Sayonara. The hanging lanterns, lovely wooden bridge, the trees painted and hung with lanterns, and the murals painted by artists in the Junior class lent a true Japanese atmosphere to the ballroom of Cutter ' s Chalet. Those attending danced to the strains of music provided by the Snowflakes. The Juniors initiated a new idea into the Prom by holding a king and queen processional. The Sophomores participated in the processional dressed in Japanese costume and carrying paper dragons and sparklers. After the end of the processional the king and queen and their court were named. The new king, crowned by Jim Brockman, is Rick Smith; and his queen, crowned by last year ' s queen, Lora Carpenter, is Pam Johnson. The king was attended by Gary Eager, Dale Doty, Jay Gerig, and Kerry Litzenberg. The queen ' s ladies-in-waiting were Sandy Smead, Nancy Thompson, Jean Delagrange, and Dianne Salzbrenner. As the evening drew to a close, the comment was that this prom had been one of the best ever held. « -5 Q rt O £0.2 i . During the summer and fall of the year its time is occupied by marching practice for the beginning and half- time shows at the football games. This year because of its increase in size, its members have no uniforms. In order to raise money for uniforms the band mem- bers ' parents formed a booster club. With the help of two local organizations and through a drive, plus the members ' money-making activities, they raised a sub- stantial sum. The band also entertained at all the home basketball games. Early in December, the band combined forces with the choirs to give the winter concert. In January, the band began to prepare for the district band contest, prac- ticing more difficult and serious selections. On April 2, the band traveled to Co- lumbia City where it received a Superior rating for the performance. Two weeks later it went to state contest at Lagrange and returned with an Excellent rating. On May 6, the band again combined with the vocal department to produce a Spring Concert. After this concert the members concentrated on rehearsal of music which they played at Co mmencement. Before the end of the school year, all the band members, except the seniors, were fitted for their new uniforms. Majorettes Although they are not members o.f the band, the MAJORETTES, Pam Johnson, Joy Nahrwold, June Rekeweg, Cindy Hoeppner, Lora Carpenter, and Drum Majorette Sue Schafer spent time rehearsing with the band during summer and fall practice and marched with them at football games and in the parades. Sue and Pam attended twirling school last summer. June and Pam performed a twirling routine in conjunction with a halftime show. Five of the girls are Seniors who have been majorettes for three years. - r Woodlanaires swing with sound of big band FIRST ROW: D. Madden, S. Linker, J. Nahrwold, C. Roemke, P. Kurtz. SECOND ROW: J. Woodlan ' s dance band, the Woodlanaires, is a group of musicians selected from the concert band who give up their free time to practice selections for contests and other performances. The Woodlanaires have been in existence since 1959 when they formed to enter a con- test. Each year since then they have received a Superior rating at the district con- test, which entitled them to enter the state contest at Indianapolis . February 5 was the date of this year ' s district contest which was held at Portage Junior High in Fort Wayne. The state contest was held two weeks later, February 19, at Butler University in Indianapolis . From there the Woodlanaires returned with an Excellent rating. The Woodlanaires performed at several pep sessions during football season. They enter- tained at one home basketball game and per formed at the winter and spring concerts . Most of the music played by the Woodlanaires is reminiscent of the tunes played by the bands famous in the Big Band Era. Woody Herman ' s Woodchip- pers ' Ball and Glen Miller ' s In the Mood are examples of this type of music. This year ' s recipient of the Arion Award, an annual award presented by the Women ' s Committee of the Philharmonic Orchestra, was Jim Schaper. His musical ability, willing- ness to give of his time and himself beyond his duty, and general talent merited him the coveted award. After graduation Jim plans to use his talent as a member of Purdue University ' s band. Belles of Woodlan Nancy, Leila, Patti, Sue, Diane, Cindy, Jackie, Brenda, and (SEATED) Diana. There are two separate contests. This year Portage Jr. High and Franklin Jr. High hosted the events. Woodlan had over twenty entries in both contests. Of the fifteen instrumentalist entries, 9 received Superior: Suzi Amstutz, Debbie Zirkelbach, a clarinet duet, a clarinet quartet, a trumpet duet, a trombone duet, and trio, some miscellaneous brass, the choir, and the Woodlanaires . In the Piano and Vocal Con- test, the Belles of Woodlan received a Superior rating. The Belles of Woodlan and the Woodlanaires were the only state entries. The chorus is directed by Mr. Theodore Taylor, and the accompanist is Kathleen Emme. For six weeks during the winter Miss Carol Winzeler substituted as choir director while Mr. Taylor was ill. The first major activity of the chorus was participation in a Christmas program with the concert and jazz bands. This program was open to the public. The chorus also took part in a Christmas program on the day before Christmas vacation began. This program took place during the school day and was held for the benefit of the students. After this, practice began for district contest. The long, hard weeks of practice were well spent, because the choir was given a first rating at the contest which was held at a grade school in Columbia City. Everyone was very proud of the well- disciplined group, and the judges commented on that fact. The choir and director deserve a lot of credit, for this is only the second year that they have been or- ganized to participate in a contest. The rating at district contest made the chorus eligible for the state contest which was held at Lakeland High School in Lagrange, Indiana. William Schafer Head Basketball Volleyball Baseball Cross Country Elmer Strautman Asst. Basketball Asst. Football Leland Etzler Football Track Edward DeLong Freshman Basketball Asst. Basketball Asst. Football M Ray Gilbert Athletic Director Golf Co-Editors Jackie Nahrwold and Brenda Etzler were responsible for designing the ARROW. Working during their free periods, they co-ordinated the efforts of the copy- writers, photographer, advertising sales, and the thousand- and-one details necessary to put together the story of 1965- 1966. Mrs. Wilma Wetter, faculty advisor to the ARROW staff, supervised all phases of planning and production. Pictures to be taken, copy to be written, bills to be paid, and deadlines to be met all required her daily attention and decisions. Copy Editors Irene Brenneke, Leila Lengacher, and Sandra Smith col- lected material from each of the clubs about the activities which took place during the school year. They typed this copy on the pages drawn up by the editors. They also identified the many pictures. Business Managers Gwen Baker and Richard Ruppert were given the task of arranging for the financing of the yearbook. Their job consisted mainly of supervising the selling of yearbook advertisements and the sale of year- books. Coach Keith grills team during Spartan time-out at Class Tourney. Bribery- -Brenda and Gwen try to gain the referee ' s favor with offer of food and drink. Glorious history of the Class of ' 66 The history of the glorious class of ' 66 began with a get -acquainted party in June of 1962. The future high school students played such dignified games as wheelbarrow racing and three- legged racing. The party did accom - plish its purpose, however, and broke the ice for the incoming Freshmen. The count taken on the first day of school showed that the class had one hundred members. Their first big project was electing class officers. They elected as leader Don Delagrange. His assistants were vice president, Sue Schafer; secretary, Barb Paterson; and treasurer, Doyle Allison. The re- porter whom they elected one month later was Keith Gerbers. Of course the class wanted money in its treasury to meet expenses, so dues were imposed of fifty cents a semester. These dues helped pay for the class party which was discussed for almost three months and was held finally on March 15, 1963. The party was a big event for the Freshmen and was very well attended. The other big event was the class tournament. The class gave many suggestions for a name and finally picked Freshmen Beatniks. They dressed in black and wore sun- glasses and sandals. Their basketball team lost, mainly because of inex- perience on their part and strong com- petition. From then on all Frosh counted the days until school was out and they could call themselves Sophomores. When school was resumed in Septem- ber, and roll was taken, it was found that the class now had ninety- seven pupils. These proceeded to elect new officers at the first meeting. Sue Schafer was elected president; Ron Martin, vice president; Joy Nahrwold, secretary; June Rekeweg, treasurer; and Jim Lake, reporter. That year was also the beginning of the student council so the class elected two representatives, Lora Carpenter and Keith Gerbers. The party held that year was Come-As - You -Are. It was held on November 16, with entertainment provided by class member Larry Coomer and his guitar. Records were played, and there were tournaments in volleyball and ping pong. In other words, it was one -half activities and one -ha If hootenanny. For the hootenanny a group of folk singers called the Just Folk Trio were con- tacted and played that evening. This party was well organized, was well attended, and the general concensus was that it was the best party the class had ever had. In January the time came to start work on the class tourney again. This year the class was more sure of itself and picked a title that gave them fame, Sophomore Syndicate. Luck must have come with the name, for that year the Sophomores won the tournament. There was one very important item yet to be taken care of, and that was the purchasing of class rings. By the time that was taken care of, the year was almost gone and with it the history of the Sophomore class of ' 64. Junior year is one that is always looked forward to with excitement and with a desire to make it the best ever. The Juniors of 1965 were no exception. The responsible people whom they picked as officers were president, Dave Bandelier; vice president, Lora Car- penter; secretary, Gwen Baker; trea- surer, Don Delagrange; and reporter, John Pepe. The ninety-five Juniors al- so elected Student Council representa- tives. The people selected were Dave Rhodes and Jim Brockman. The main object of the Junior class was to raise money, money, and more money, for financing the Prom in the spring. Mr. Etzler sponsored the first money- making project, candy sales. The candy was sold over Thanksgiving and netted a respectable amount of money, over $800.00. In January, planning began for the Junior -Senior Prom. A place was picked, the Chamber of Commerce Building in Fort Wayne, and commit- tees for menu, pictures, theme, pro- gram, band, decorations, invitations, and coronation were selected. March was Class Tourney time. By this time the class had a reputation for originality and entertainment, so they had to work hard to find a suitable name. Finally they picked Junior Gypsies as their title. A skit was also planned. By this time work was beginning on the Junior play. The class again decided to be original by not presenting a three - act play, but instead a Junior Capers , displaying the musical and dramatic ta- lents of the majority of the class. At the May class meeting, the class had a balance in its treasury of $1600.45, the receipts of the candy sales, magazine sales, and the play. The prom was held on May 8th. The Juniors had put much effort into this endeavor, and the results were very good. The Prom went very smoothly and was complimented on by many people. It was rumored all year that the Har- lan students would join the Woodlan students at Woodlan the next year. Rumor became fact. One day in May the Harlan students visited Woodlan to become acquainted with it and with its inmates. This was the last big week before school came to a close. In the fall the class came back very much aware of the fact that they were Seniors. New faces soon became the faces of friends as the Harlan and Woodlan students settled down for a year of work, fun and friendship. The officers elected to lead the massive Senior class were Jim Brockman, President; Doyle Allison, Vice-Presi- dent; Diane Korte, Secretary; Leila Lengacher, Treasurer; and Joy Nahrwold, Reporter. Thus the busy Senior year was off to a smooth start. The Seniors of the Class of ' 66 entered their float Firing up a Victory in the Homecoming Parade. Peg Perkins was crowned the 1966 Homecoming Queen with Lora Carpenter and Joy Nahrwold as the Senior Attendants. The Senior play chosen by the Senior class was the Pulitzer Prize-winning Our Town. For six weeks before the opening of the play on November 6th and 7th, the thespians of the Senior Class ate, slept and breathed their lines, spending every spare moment working on the play. The big nights came and went again quickly. Now there was a feeling of letdown after all the hours of work. But there were always things for Seniors to do. Now they sold advertisements to pay for the yearbook. The sales man- agers worked frantically, and the mon- ey was finally collected. Now came the work for editors and copy editors. The library was in a state of constant turmoil as editors Jackie Nahrwold and Brenda Etzler, and copy editors Irene Bren- neke, Leila Lengacher, and Sandy Smith worked to meet their deadlines. But sales managers Gwen Baker and Richard Ruppert still had the actual selling of annuals to take care of. A record number was sold. That year for the class tourney, the dignified and graceful Seniors dressed as Spartans. Even though the team didn ' t win, the Seniors did receive the trophy for being the best dressed class. The class motto, the flower, and the colors were picked in March, and com- mittees were appointed to work with the administration concerning bac- calaureate and commencement exer- cises. After the Prom in May the first Senior class party was held. It was held at the New Haven Conservation Club. The theme was Senior Safari, and both rooms were wildly decorated to fit the theme. The live band provided music for both square and round dancing. Unfortunately, the party was forced to adjourn at 12:00. The big day grew closer and closer. Teachers piled on more assignments which Seniors naturally hated to do. Baccalaureate was held on Sunday, May 22 and was a very impressive ceremony. Finally the big day came. The Seniors left the school with the words of their motto in mind, To do our best today to insure a better tomorrow. ADVERTISING Our Congratulations to the Graduating Class B. F.
