History 1954 - Dear Diary: Here it is, May 3rd, 1958, and here we are Seniors of the 1958 graduating class with just two more weeks until graduation. It doesn't seem possible, Diary dear, that we're here already. Let's just for fun go back and read some of the pages of three or four years ago. Oh, look, Diary, here it is September 2, 1954. It says Today thirty-five Freshmen gathered on the south side of the old assembly. Golly, we were all a twitter and trembly , but we chose as our sponsor, Miss Margaret Rosentrader, to get the ball rolling. Poor Rosie didn't know what she was in for. Our class officers were as follows: President-lim Schumacher, Vice-President-Bill Bennett, Secretary-Terry Klinker, and Treasurer-Steve Breit. For queen candidate we chose Pat Hauke, and for king we chose Iim Schumacher. Although we campaigned like mad we sorta-well, just plain lost , but we were all set for the next three years. Our class certainly had to have a winner. Look Diary, September 30, 1954, found all the freshmen at the home of Karen Roemke for a hilarious hayride. Despite all the tomatoes from upper classmen who should have known better , we had a glorious evening. These big boys try their hardest to run us poor freshies! October 3, 1954, found our class trying to survive a reckless initiation. The seniors seemed to enjoy themselves immensely, not to say a word for the poor freshies. We survived though, with only one casualty for the whole evening. November 4, basketballstarted and guess what, two freshman girls were the reserve yell leaders: they were Karen Roemke and Doris Schulenburg. That shows you what a good class can do, and Diary, that's not all, seven freshman boys backed the reserve team. They were Iim Schumacher, Terry Klinker, Terry Smith, Dick Woebbeking, Bill Bennett, Ivan Gerig, and Steve Breit. December 31, Sharon Kleine opened her home for a delightful class party. We all stayed up till 12:00, to welcome in the New Year of 1955 . After all we were getting pretty old--freshmen you know. March 26, Terry Klinker won the free throw contest. March 28, Shirley Rich won the American Legion Essay Contest, first prize winner at that, and March 31, Karen Roemke won the first prize for her poster on Fire Prevention. My, Diary, we freshmen are smart! A real good class. Well, the month of April went fast, and soon we found ourselves at the end of the school year. We all were sorta sad, and so we made our farewell until the next fall. 1955 September 4, 1955, thirty-two Sophomores came back: we only lost Linda Burk, but we gained Faye McNutt. Boy, we were really growing upg this year we got to sit next to the big aisle. We were really getting smart! We chose as our sponsor, Mr. Ira MCBride5 al- though he seemed terribly gruff at times, he was a lamb deep down under. The officers were President-Doris Schulenburg, Vice-President-Bill Bennett, Secretary-Sharon Kleine, and Treasurer-Steve Breit. We also chose queen and king candidates, Miss Karen Roemke and Terry Klinker. To our pleasure, our own Karen walked off with the title of Queen, September 27 found all Sophomores out to Iim Schumacher's for a hayride. Although it rained cats and dogs , and one person was knocked unconscious by a flying rock, we had a real cool time. November 6, seven boys turned out to back the reserve team, the same seven in fact, but this year they've really improved. November 15 found all the Sophomores under the supervision of our sponsor in the gym for a party and as is said, we had a ball. '

December 4, 1955 , six Sophomore girls sang at the Lions' Variety Show, and they came out rated second. But they'll rise again. March 24, 1956, Ivan Gerig won the free throw contest, and May the 3rd, our own Sharon Kleine was the Queen of the first May Day Festival ever to be held. May 5, the Sophomores ordered their ringsp boy, we were really something! May l4 arrived and we all bid each other good-by , but we were greatly looking for- ward to our Iunior year the coming fall. 1956 September 6, 1956-This year we've rated seats on the left side of the big aisle: we're considered upperclassmen now. We chose as our sponsors Mrs. Wilma Wetter and Arthur Wilder, and officers were President-Sandy Murphy, Vice-President-Bill Bennett, Secretary- Doris Schulenburg, and Treasurer-Jim Schumacher. We gained two new members--Sandy Ertel and Larry Carter, and lost three, Sharon Kleine, Sharon Voorhies, and George Richhart. During the summer our class's grief was caused by the death of Sharon Kleine, informally known as Whitie. She was greatly missed by all, for when the Iunior year began, there was a strange emptiness where Whitie should have been. September 8, we chose for queen and king candidates, Sandy Murphy and Terry Smith. We again lost. We had just one more year to gain back the Crown. September 25, the Juniors held a hayride at the home of Dianne Copenhaver, and this time, for once, everything went off in grand style, without any complications. September 28, the Iuniors held their first real project, a paper drive. September 31, our card campaign started, and guess what, we out-sold any previous class . October 12 , our sweaters came! Now we were full-fledged juniors. Although the tem- peratures registered 70 degrees, all Juniors were proudly seen wearing their sweaters despite the huge drops of perspiration which trickled down their foreheads. October 13, the big day arrived, and we received our class rings. Golly, they were so shiny and beautiful! October 15, the juniors held a fabulous skating party at Bell's Rink. November 4-5 , the Juniors put on the best play Woodburn viewers had ever seen, Finders Creepers. When the curtain fell the final night, everyone had to agree that Wilbur and Hercules had stolen the show. November 6, five boys proudly donned varsity suits. They were Iim Schumacher, Bill Bennett, Ivan Gerig, Dick Woebbeking, and Terry Klinker. Yes, this team was really ready and willing to go places. December 15, we started selling chili and hot dogs at noon. Although the chili was burned and the hot dogs cold, we managed to make some money. February 29, our magazine campaign ended, and Karen Roemke and Iim Schumacher were high salesmen. Karen chose a radio as her prize, and Jim chose a watch. Now we had money in the bank! March 14, Sandy Murphy was the runner-up in the girls' bowling contest. March 18, Karen Roemke and Doris Schulenburg were chosen as Girls' State representa- tives, and Sandy Murphy and Starlee Miller were alternates. Iim Schumacher and Terry Smith were also chosen for Boys' State, and Dick Woebbeking and Bruce Yerks were alternates. March 20, the Juniors chose the junior-Senior Reception theme. Yes, Showboat was our grand selection. April 15, Sandy Murphy was chosen Queen of the Lakes contestant for the Mermaid Festival which would be held during the summer. April 27, yes, the big night finally arrived. All the guys and gals proudly paraded in their frills. Our theme Showboat was a sensation, and the Seniors sincerely had a mar- velous night to remember.
