Reporter KELLER EQUIPMENT COMPANY Vrfoodburn, Indiana History 1954 - Dear Diary: Here it is, May 3rd, 1958, and here we are Seniors of the 1958 graduating class with just two more weeks until graduation. It doesn't seem possible, Diary dear, that we're here already. Let's just for fun go back and read some of the pages of three or four years ago. Oh, look, Diary, here it is September 2, 1954. It says Today thirty-five Freshmen gathered on the south side of the old assembly. Golly, we were all a twitter and trembly , but we chose as our sponsor, Miss Margaret Rosentrader, to get the ball rolling. Poor Rosie didn't know what she was in for. Our class officers were as follows: President-lim Schumacher, Vice-President-Bill Bennett, Secretary-Terry Klinker, and Treasurer-Steve Breit. For queen candidate we chose Pat Hauke, and for king we chose Iim Schumacher. Although we campaigned like mad we sorta-well, just plain lost , but we were all set for the next three years. Our class certainly had to have a winner. Look Diary, September 30, 1954, found all the freshmen at the home of Karen Roemke for a hilarious hayride. Despite all the tomatoes from upper classmen who should have known better , we had a glorious evening. These big boys try their hardest to run us poor freshies! October 3, 1954, found our class trying to survive a reckless initiation. The seniors seemed to enjoy themselves immensely, not to say a word for the poor freshies. We survived though, with only one casualty for the whole evening. November 4, basketballstarted and guess what, two freshman girls were the reserve yell leaders: they were Karen Roemke and Doris Schulenburg. That shows you what a good class can do, and Diary, that's not all, seven freshman boys backed the reserve team. They were Iim Schumacher, Terry Klinker, Terry Smith, Dick Woebbeking, Bill Bennett, Ivan Gerig, and Steve Breit. December 31, Sharon Kleine opened her home for a delightful class party. We all stayed up till 12:00, to welcome in the New Year of 1955 . After all we were getting pretty old--freshmen you know. March 26, Terry Klinker won the free throw contest. March 28, Shirley Rich won the American Legion Essay Contest, first prize winner at that, and March 31, Karen Roemke won the first prize for her poster on Fire Prevention. My, Diary, we freshmen are smart! A real good class. Well, the month of April went fast, and soon we found ourselves at the end of the school year. We all were sorta sad, and so we made our farewell until the next fall. 1955 September 4, 1955, thirty-two Sophomores came back: we only lost Linda Burk, but we gained Faye McNutt. Boy, we were really growing upg this year we got to sit next to the big aisle. We were really getting smart! We chose as our sponsor, Mr. Ira MCBride5 al- though he seemed terribly gruff at times, he was a lamb deep down under. The officers were President-Doris Schulenburg, Vice-President-Bill Bennett, Secretary-Sharon Kleine, and Treasurer-Steve Breit. We also chose queen and king candidates, Miss Karen Roemke and Terry Klinker. To our pleasure, our own Karen walked off with the title of Queen, September 27 found all Sophomores out to Iim Schumacher's for a hayride. Although it rained cats and dogs , and one person was knocked unconscious by a flying rock, we had a real cool time. November 6, seven boys turned out to back the reserve team, the same seven in fact, but this year they've really improved. November 15 found all the Sophomores under the supervision of our sponsor in the gym for a party and as is said, we had a ball. ' December 4, 1955 , six Sophomore girls sang at the Lions' Variety Show, and they came out rated second. But they'll rise again. March 24, 1956, Ivan Gerig won the free throw contest, and May the 3rd, our own Sharon Kleine was the Queen of the first May Day Festival ever to be held. May 5, the Sophomores ordered their ringsp boy, we were really something! May l4 arrived and we all bid each other good-by , but we were greatly looking for- ward to our Iunior year the coming fall. 1956 September 6, 1956-This year we've rated seats on the left side of the big aisle: we're considered upperclassmen now. We chose as our sponsors Mrs. Wilma Wetter and Arthur Wilder, and officers were President-Sandy Murphy, Vice-President-Bill Bennett, Secretary- Doris Schulenburg, and Treasurer-Jim Schumacher. We gained two new members--Sandy Ertel and Larry Carter, and lost three, Sharon Kleine, Sharon Voorhies, and George Richhart. During the summer our class's grief was caused by the death of Sharon Kleine, informally known as Whitie. She was greatly missed by all, for when the Iunior year began, there was a strange emptiness where Whitie should have been. September 8, we chose for queen and king candidates, Sandy Murphy and Terry Smith. We again lost. We had just one more year to gain back the Crown. September 25, the Juniors held a hayride at the home of Dianne Copenhaver, and this time, for once, everything went off in grand style, without any complications. September 28, the Iuniors held their first real project, a paper drive. September 31, our card campaign started, and guess what, we out-sold any previous class . October 12 , our sweaters came! Now we were full-fledged juniors. Although the tem- peratures registered 70 degrees, all Juniors were proudly seen wearing their sweaters despite the huge drops of perspiration which trickled down their foreheads. October 13, the big day arrived, and we received our class rings. Golly, they were so shiny and beautiful! October 15, the juniors held a fabulous skating party at Bell's Rink. November 4-5 , the Juniors put on the best play Woodburn viewers had ever seen, Finders Creepers. When the curtain fell the final night, everyone had to agree that Wilbur and Hercules had stolen the show. November 6, five boys proudly donned varsity suits. They were Iim Schumacher, Bill Bennett, Ivan Gerig, Dick Woebbeking, and Terry Klinker. Yes, this team was really ready and willing to go places. December 15, we started selling chili and hot dogs at noon. Although the chili was burned and the hot dogs cold, we managed to make some money. February 29, our magazine campaign ended, and Karen Roemke and Iim Schumacher were high salesmen. Karen chose a radio as her prize, and Jim chose a watch. Now we had money in the bank! March 14, Sandy Murphy was the runner-up in the girls' bowling contest. March 18, Karen Roemke and Doris Schulenburg were chosen as Girls' State representa- tives, and Sandy Murphy and Starlee Miller were alternates. Iim Schumacher and Terry Smith were also chosen for Boys' State, and Dick Woebbeking and Bruce Yerks were alternates. March 20, the Juniors chose the junior-Senior Reception theme. Yes, Showboat was our grand selection. April 15, Sandy Murphy was chosen Queen of the Lakes contestant for the Mermaid Festival which would be held during the summer. April 27, yes, the big night finally arrived. All the guys and gals proudly paraded in their frills. Our theme Showboat was a sensation, and the Seniors sincerely had a mar- velous night to remember. L May 6, the juniors helped the Seniors in their candlelight baccalaureate services. We all anticipated the next year when we would be in their position. May 13, school was out and we all wished that May 17, 1958, wasn't a whole year off. But we looked forward to our Senior year. 1957 September 5, 1957, found twenty-six Seniors assembled in what was supposed to be a school room. We had lost Larry Carter, Doris Schulenburg, and Bob Killian and we'd gained none. We had chosen Sandy Ertel and Ivan Gerig as our queen and king candidates during the summer, but somehow our queen candidate was lost to the altar, so Ianice Busse was nominated to fill her place. We Seniors didn't make it, but we were very proud of our handsome candidates. The start of the year was so muddled up by remodeling, that school actually didn't start until October. It was very usual to walk through the hall and stumble over a lead pipe, or even get lost among piles of boxes, but add a little humor to these trying times, and you end with a pile of fun. On September 25, we all journeyed to Robert's studio for our Senior pictures. Yes, the day had finally arrivedp now our Senior title seemed more real. October 1, school really started and we elected as our sponsors Mrs. Lois Keller and Mr. Arthur Wilder. We elected officers as follows: President-Sandy Murphy, Vice-President- Steve Breit, Secretary-jim Schumacher, and Treasurer-Karen Roemke. October 17, Sandy was chosen to represent our class for the D.A,R. award. My, we were proud of her. October 28, basketball started, and this year we knew that we were sure to win our games, for you see, four Seniors were of the starting five, and there were even some more players who were valuable, waiting to take over for these tired boys. November 3, the Senior Class was really being well represented this year, for the cheerleaders chosen to keep the team's morale up all came from our class . They were Bruce Yerks, Sandy Murphy, and Karen Roemke. November 27, the Senior Class held a bake sale up at the Marsh Foodliner. Despite the fact that Mr, Weatherman made it rain and snow, the Seniors returned home a little richer. December 10, the big Day arrived, and we received our pictures. The oos and ahs could be heard, and of course everyone wanted a picture. They all thought we were so terribly handsome! December 15, we ordered our name cards and our caps and gowns. Our invitations were picked out. Everyone was getting very anxious for that 17th day of May. December 20, Christmas vacation started, and golly, we got two whole weeks off! After a little party in our home room, we all bid each other a Very Merry Christmas and departed. january 6 we were back from a glorious vacation of two weeks. Ianuary 8, we picked our editor and co-editor of the annual. They were Sandy Murphy and jim Schumacher. Mr. Henney said we needed two bosses , so here they were. Poor kids, they had loads of work ahead of them. january 10, the Seniors received their name cards. My goodness, Diary, everyone loves usp everyone wants our card. This really makes a person feel like a celebrity. January 16, the County Tourney started, and we defeated Elmhurst on the very first try. They thought they had it all sewed up in the bag that they would have a Victory, but we surely surprised them. Then, Diary, we played Arcola and wong and we just kept going until we reached the semi-finals and played Hoagland. Here we stgpped, but we surely were proud of our team and Mr. Ivy, our coach. This is Mr. lvy.'s first year coaching our boys and look what a marvelous job he has done already! Maybe next year we'll take the county. We've got great hopes for next year. We will be out, Diary, but we'll still be backing the team all the way to the final game. J ffl' jj h. -A january 23, semester exams started, and we Seniors were very delighted, for this would be our last cramming like crazy for tests in the old High School. Ianuary 28, we picked our class colors, motto, and flowers. Such a time, Diary, that we had trying to please everyone. It finally ended that we chose blue and silver for our colors, pink roses for the flowers, and our motto, Upward Forever, Backward Never. Ianuary 30, Shirley Rich won the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow Contest for our school. February 25, five boys received their basketball jackets. My, they looked handsome! I guess everyone had to admit that we Seniors had the best-looking class. February 26, the Sectional tourney started, and since Mr. Ivy had taken our boys so far in the County we expected to win the Sectional. No, Diary, seriously, we all had great hopes, and we did win our first game, but when we went on to try to beat Concordia, our luck changed. Those terrible refs , of course it couldn't have been our boys! March 7, we picked our play, and this year, with the help of Mrs. Keller, we were going to give a Broadway production, Arsenic and Old Lace. Nine boys and three girls made up the cast. March 28, the Seniors held a surprise birthday party for Mrs. Keller. She was so shocked that we almost created a disaster. April 25-26, the night arrived for the fabulous presentation of Arsenic and Old Lace. Mrs. Keller was such a wonderful director, and the kids performed so marvelously, that all turned out perfectly. Well, Seniors, we've gone through the pages of several years, and you have heard about your experiences. You did have a glorious time despite all the little differences. Now let's look at the present. l'm sure you're all having a glorious time here tonight. The Iuniors have gone to a lot of work for us. l know all of you Seniors will want to thank the Iuniors for the lovely evening which we will remember for years to come. Now the time has come to glimpse into the future. Your Recognition Night will be held May l3, and the Valcdictorian and the Salutatorian will each receive a loving cup, and also the G. C. Henderson winner will be announced. May ll will be your Baccalaureate and Rev. H. Georg will be the speaker. May l7, l95S, will be the biggest night of your school life, the night you've been waiting for for twelve years. Commencement is a night that means much to you, your family, and your friends. Don Odle from Taylor University will be the speaker. May l8, you Seniors leave on your long-awaited trip to Washington and New York, and you get back to Fort Wayne the following Friday. Yes, your school days are finished now, and each of you will be going different directions. Your future lies within you yourself whether you be a success or a failure. But remember, Seniors, always keep your head up, strive for the best things in life, and remember always--take your Heavenly Creator as your lifetime partner, so that when you reach the end of your long walk, you can say, It's been a job well done. 1'Q I. This year, for the first time, we have a selected chorus composed of fifty mem- bers and directed by T. D. Taylor. On December 16, the chorus, along with the senior and junior bands, junior choir and special groups presented a Christmas concert. In accord' with the Christmas sea- son we recorded a tape of carols which was played over the Lincoln Tower. Then on Christmas Day our chorus presented a half-hour program over station WOWO. Our chorus participated in the Allen County Choral Festival at Leo on March 27. Our individual numbers were Onward Christian Soldiers and Mutual Admiration Society. We also took part in the Spring Concert and the Baccalaureate Service. Our accompanists this year have been Charlotte Burchardt and Carol Winzeler. STANDING: Charlotte Burchardt, julie Horvath, Linda Wells, Barbara Parsons, Nancy Murphy, Director, Theodore Taylor. Composed of fifty junior high and high school students, the band has been di- rected for two years by Theodore Taylor. Activity has characterized the band during the past year. An excellent rating was earned in the NISBOVA contest at Elkhart in the spring, and in October the band participated in the NISBOVA marching contest at North Side High School. Several members of the band gained recognition in the local Solo and Ensemble contest in Fort Wayne, and two, Elaine Armstrong and Carol Winzeler, were privileged to enter the state competition at Indianapolis. Constituting some of the summer activities was the band's participation in several parades and fairs. There was the Mermaid Festival at North Webster with Sandy Murphy representing the organization as our candidate for Queen of the Lakes, the Van Wert Peony Festival, the Lion's State Convention Parade in Fort Wayne, the Auburn Street Fair, where out of a field of forty bands the Woodburn band received third place, and the local Legion Days. In the fall the Woodburn band proudly led the Woodburn Day's parade and later represented our community at the annual Fort Wayne United Funk Kickoff parade. Superior players from the Allen County bands compose the Clinic Band which gives several spring concerts. Chosen to be in this from our band were Carol Winzeler, Bill Gordon, Ianice Coomer, Pat Bruns, Peggy Thompson, Elaine Armstrong, and Kathy Copenhaver. Four of these members were selected to play first chair in their section. In the past year Woodburn has been proud of its band, and under Mr. Taylor, it will be a justifiable pride. The entries are regis- tered in groups depending upon the age of the musician and the difficulty of the composition performed. The top three groups are eligible to enter the State Contest, if a superior rating is received at the district meet. This year many students en- tered this competition in solo and ensemble selections. Because of the many superior ratings, our Music Department is very proud of its members. l 4 n This group of Junior girls received a superior rating at the District Contest and an excellent at the State Finals. They have appeared on both radio and television. This singing organization is composed of students in the seventh and eighth grades. It is here that we learn part singing so that when we get into high school we can qualify for the concert choir. This year has been an eventful one for us. We were a part of the Christmas program, and we also sang at the Junior Choir Festival at Leo on March 7, 1958. Our song in the festival was a Swedish Dance Song which was a lot of fun to sing, and the audience liked it, also. We also performed at the School Spring Concert on April 30, 1958. Stafford The Future Farmers of America is a non-profit, non-political, farm youth organi- zation of voluntary membership designed to take its place along with other agencies striving for the development of leadership, the building of a more permanent agricul- ture, and the improvement of country life. It constitutes one of the most efficient agricultural teaching devices that have been discovered up to the present time. The Future Farmers of America exists today because of a co-operative spirit and a desire on the part of farm boys, fourteen to about twenty-one years of age, prepar- ing for farming through vocational agriculture, to have a national organization of their own in which they may secure practical business experience, act as their own in- structors, and enjoy the fellowship of one another. It is vocational education on a farm youth level. Improved agriculture, better local communities, a more satisfying farm home life, and more efficient farmer-citizens are emerging as a result of the boys' experiences . re'h,'? n F. H. . .. This year the Future Homemakers of America Club has fifty-five members. There were a number of activities carried on in the club during the year including a party for new members, a bake sale, Christmas caroling, and a talent show. We also were privileged to hear a civil defense speaker, and Mrs. Elmer Becker who showed slides she had taken in India. The fall and spring district meetings were attended, and the Melodi-Airs sang in the district contest held at the spring meeting. Our main money-making project was selling sloppy joes to the school pupils at noon, which was very successful. Ianice Doehrman was nominated for District Treasurer. Under the leadership of our advisor, Mrs. Morris, and with the co-operation of officers and members we have accomplished much this year. President ....... . . . Science 85 ath The Science and Math Club is a fairly new organization at Woodburn High School being in its second year. This year SalVI has twenty-five members, all junior and seniors taking advanced math and science courses. SaM meetings are educational and informal. The purpose of the club is to promote a greater interest in the world of-science and create a source of pleasure for the students. At this time SaM plans to tour several places of interest in Fort Wayne: those being considered are Seyfert's Foods, Inc. , Coca-Cola, Baer Field, and WPTA-TV. One of our outstanding projects this year was our splash party at the YWCA on February 7 . Because we were late getting organized this year, our sponsor, Mr. Wilder, put a great deal of time into the club. For this we thank him very much. I ing 8.
