This year Roselyn Stucky was selected to represent Woodburn and all the school is proud of her efforts. The G. C. After everyone had become somewhat acquainted, we elected our class officers. They were: Donald I-letrick, President: Roselyn Stucky, Vice- Presidentg Jack Berryhill, Secretary-Treasurer. The big highlights of the year were our initiation party and a Valentine Party given for us by the Sophomores. At the end of a very exciting year, we felt as if we were a part of the big family at Woodburn. After our summer vacation, we returned to Woodburn High as Sophornores, to find that we had lost Sarah Eicher, Elizabeth Johnson, Albert Malfait, Donald Hetrick and Gorden Lowden, but we had gained Ronald Nietert and Marvin I-Iockemeyer. We elected as our class officers: Charles Wells, Presidentg Roselyn Stucky, Vice-Presidentg Bob Persyn, Secretary and Mike Moser, Treasurer, This year we started earning money by raffling off cakes at basketball games. ln Febru- ary, we gave a party for the Freshman class, which has come to be a custom here at Woodburn High School. And then, almost before we knew it, spring was here and we were leaving again for our summer vacation with half of our high school ed- ucation behind us. In the fall of 1952, once again we ascended the stairs of the old school minus Jack Berryhill, Betty JeanEicker and Dick Closson, to beginwhat was to be a very busy year. We were happy to have with us Lynda Smith and Shirley Flint. Now it was time to go to work and earn some money which we would be needing before long. First of all, we elected officers who would be responsible for our undertakings This Page ls Sponsored By WOODBUPN LUMBER COMPANY Woodburn- Indl-HHH to be a success. They were: Patsy Carpenter, Presidentg Larry lvlurphy, Vice- Presidentg Roselyn Stucky, Secretary and Louise Reddersen, Treasurer. Early in the year, we ordered our class rings and received them in November. Our first money-making activity was the Junior Play, Who Killed Aunt Caroline? In the cast were Cvailyn Roemke, Carolyn Gregg, Marianne Coomer, Maryann Killian, Louise Reddersen, Joyce Schulenburg, Roselyn Stucky, Patsy Carpenter, Robert Persyn, Bob Fry, Harry Stoller and Larry Murphy. Then came the Christmas card sale, bake sales, paper drives and the magazine campaign. At the end of a busy and exciting year, came the Junior -Senior Banquet. We chose as our theme, April Showers and shower it did! But, in spite of the rain, we had a very enjoyable evening with Bob Fry acting as toastmaster. It was a memo- rable occasion for us, but we will remember longer the fun we had making and carrying out the plans for the decorations, speakers, etc. And again, it was time for summer vacations and we were leaving with the memory of a very successful year. Once again we returned to school, but this time something seemed different. There was an air of excitement on the north side of the assembly: we were now Seniors. We had lost Janice Gerig, Marianne Coomer, Paul Bellis and Virgil Fiedler. We were very proud to have one of our classmates serving in the United States Army although we missed hirn. Bob Fry is now wearing the uniform of Uncle Sam. We elected Larry Murphy as Presidentg Bob Persyn, Vice-President: Lynda Smith, Secretary and Maryann Killian and Charles Wells as Treasur ers. This Pages Is Sponsored By L0vE's MEAT MARKET BOLLIER GARAGE Harlan, Indiana Harlan, Indiana Carolyn Gregg was chosen as Woodburn Day Queen with eleven other Senior girls in her court. An occasion we will never forget is the initiation party for the Freshmen and we really welcomed them. To help us get money in the treasury, we had bake sales, sold chili and various other things. Then we had to start spending some of our hard-earned money. Senior pictures, name cards, invi- tations, caps and gowns: all of these things add to the wonderful memories we will always have of our high school days. At the end of the first semester we lost Shirley Flint, leaving twenty-six to finish the year. Then in April we presented our class play, Strictly Confidential , directed by Mrs. Wilma Wetter, with eleven characters acting their best to make it a huge success. Following the second presentation, we had a cast party at the home of Harry Stoller which was enjoyed by all. This too, is the year that our class is responsible for setting up the Arrow for publication and we've worked hard trying to make it bigger and better. On April 24, we were the guests of the Junior class at the Junior-Senior Reception. The theme was Moonlight And Roses g this event is another of our treasures. Our beautiful Baccalaureate Service, which was held on May 16, will always be remembered. Reverend Charles Schmidt and Reverend Schulenburg officiated. Commencement was held on May Zl, with Reverend C. W. Kocker of the Forest Park Methodist Church, Fort Wayne, as our speaker. l-Ie spoke on Daily Preparations Determine The Future , Our colors are blue and silver and our flower is a blue and white carnation. Our theme Not The End But The Begin ning will follow each of us as he takes a different pathway of life. On May 23, we left for Washington, D.C. and New Yorkg we had reached the goal we had been work ing so hard toward for the past four years. I'rn sure, Larry, you'll enjoy that, For some of your classmates will confess They want to be married and live in the West, But they'll find out the old home town is best. Yes, here comes Gailyn Roemke down the aisle, She's really walking slow, for in a little while She'll be Mrs., and she's wondering why Her soldier boy has a big black eye. To an eye specialist she said he must go, So looking thru' the directory in a certain row They were surprised, no doubt, to find Donnie Becker's name. I-Ie'd be cheap and kind. As they entered the office, Much to their surprise In a nice white uniform, behind a big desk, Was Lynda Smith, looking her very best. To lunch they all four decided to go. Wouldn't you know it would just have to snow 7 Then they heard a whistle blow, They knew it had to be a cop making them go slow. Why, look , they all did cry, It's Walter Webster and he's heaving a big sigh. The lady lying in the street was Phyllis Sweet, She wasn't hurtg she was just beat, Phyllis was used to flying low, For an air-hostess is always on the go. She said that, no doubt, we knew, Gerald Long was in town, too. Gerald is a car salesman down by the tracks, He's really making the money and stuffing it in sacks To Woodburn, though, he'd like to go back And get a home town girlg that's all he lacks. By now we were so hungry we could hardly wait, For it really was getting quite late. In the lunch room, though it was lit quite dim, We could see Darlene Roemke, with a big grin. This Page is Sponsored By WOODBURN EQUITY EXCHANGE Woodburn Indiana Uh: d1r1n't you know f sne softly sam, Working in here T get my daily bread. The place is all mine, but sometimes I 'see red', For l seldom ever get to bed. She had television in her cafe. On the screen, in his own fashionable way, Was Roland Buuck singing, I Love Her Down By The Bay . He'll be a wonderful crooner some day. The next program showed a pretty young lass: We all recognized her as a member of our class. It was Mary Butt being a model, But on high heels she really did toddle. We decided to leave Darlene and go down the street. Our car needed gas and the attendant was Ronald Nietert. He said that if we needed repairs, he had a good mechanic. It was .Tim Shanebrook ready to give our car a tonic. We took a little drive into the country. There, on a tractor, pulling out an old tree, Was Harry Joe Stoller humming like a bee. Come up to the house. I want to show you my farm, by gee, He told us Dick Helmke lived next to him, And that the Lord had been good and kind. He had blessed Dick with triplets this time: And Dick reports they are getting along fine. Going into the house with Harry Joe, We heard a familiar voice on the radio. It was Robert Persyn announcing for Tide, Saying, It takes all the dirt and some of the hide. We visited with Joe for a couple of hours, A Then his wife came in with such beautiful flowers. She said that Maryann Killian was doing real good Running the greenhouse like all single girls could. Joe said that tonight there would be a basketball game By some girls fl believe he said from Notre Damel And that Joyce Schulenburg was their coach. Joyce looked so pretty in her white trousers and coat. Joyce said the music teacher was Roselyn Stucky, And Roselyn never had a pupil to play hookey. The students all admired their teacher And hoped they'd always be able to keep her. During the game, one girl got hurt. She lay on the floor like a piece of dirt. Mike Moser was in the crowd, He arose and walked over so very proud. This Page ls Sponsored By FRED DUNDERMAN Distributors Of Fleet-Wing Products Antwerp, Ohio WAYNE MEEK Hicksviue, ohio Mike is a Medical Technician. But to help this girl he wished he was a magician. l've got to have help: it's this girl's leg. So they called for Miss Carolyn Gregg. Carolyn is an instructor of nurses. She knew how to handle people to put them in heal-ses. She asked us if we'd like to see Thelma Weber. She will be a teacher here in September. We have an air base in the next town. Don't all of you look at me and frown, For Lonnie Voorhies is stationed there. He's a five star General with so many worries he hasn't any hair. Wait until I tell you about Charlie Wells. All day long he rings door bells. He has a line all of his own For a traveling salesman is never at home. Where's Patsy Carpenter? Does anyone know? Wherever she is, I'll bet she's making the dough. We knew she graduated and became a lawyer. Maybe some day she'll return to see the Woodburn Warriors. Marvin Hockemeyer is a hot-rod driver. He's won so many races he now wants to be a flierg That way he'd never worry about having a flat tire. His hot-rod is for saleg does anyone want to buy her? Louise Reddersen is up by the Straits. She's selling fishing hooks and bait. Her store is always so nice and neat and Her motto is, Where Old Friends Meet . Bud Fry, a message to you we'd like to convey Since your wish is to protect the U.S.A. We all are certain that in this life God has a protecting hand over you in the strife. Keep your aim high and be brave. We'll keep old Glory flying high to the day of our grave. On boys like you we all depend To keep our country free to the end. Farewell Seniors until we meet again. This Page Is Sponsored By KLEINHENS MARKET EIx1ENHlSER'S SINCLAIR SERVICE Zi: Antwerp, Ol1i0 Woodburn, Indiana Initiation The annual initiation of the greenhorns was well attended by both the dignified Seniors and the Freshies on a warm September Friday evening. Each Senior was responsi- ble for several of the greenhorns so even if your imagination runs wild you won't be far from the truth when guessing how those forlorn Freshies were dressed. It was a sight to warrn the heart of any loyal Senior. After niake-up had been properly applied and also charming rope bracelets, the groups raced each other. How? by pushing onions with their noses, of course. Also, for those inexperienced and uneducated persons ofthe group, we whetted their appetite with a bit of garlic. Next came the proverbial blindfold, bare feet and an escorted tour around the pavillion. Such queer and unexpected things as did happen then w ere entirely une:-cplainable--almost. Then came the refreshments which were, as usual, thoroughly enjoyed by those satisfied Seniors with the Freshies looking on uninter- estedly for some strange reason. This concluded the Freshmen's formal welcome to Woodburn High School. f D., ,I I4 ff g 4? 1 S if a This Page Is Sponsored By DELUXE CLEANERS WESTHAVEN FLORAL Sl-IOP New Haven, Indiana New Haven, Indiana ,Y .228 , , 9 6 sf Q 5 ax 5' Q 4 f M +,5,?+ 4 X 1 ',4 V , y ,, 9 , ' . 5, 18 rx, f 4 ,e w 4 v N 45925 v 4 f Z W ' 1 5 M, wi' ,, Q A A' :Syf -2.9 1 ,,-45' , Z V,,., 1 .,?,., fivgx - Y ., , gf. rs' ,..,,-1, zz- J, , . Band had more members than ever before this year with thirty-six enrolled and we think we've played better than ever before, too. We had a new director this year, Mr. Paul Welker, who really helped us to improve our playing At Mr. Welker's suggestion, the band elected officers for the first time in several years The following were elected: Max Long, Presldentg Roselyn Stucky, Vice-Presidentg Nancy Wetter, Secretary and Rosalie Closson, Treasurer. To start the year out right we marched for Woodburn Days. On Halloween night the band led the parade through Woodburn, with the majorettes masked and in the traditional colors, blac k and orange . Of course, the band played at all of the home ball games. Despite the lack of a few players because of the basketball team, we think we did quite well. During the Christmas music program, everyone enjoyed the popular modern arrangements of old songs . The Allen County Band Festival was held at New Haven on April 10, There were seven members of the band who played in the clinic band, an organization of selected players from each school band.
