History On one sunny fall morning in 1947, thirty-four rather frightened young people were meeting together for the first time at the Woodburn High School. We were shy at first but soon became acquainted and organized our Freshman Class. We selected for our officers, Dick Becker as President, Max Thompson, Vice-President and Carol Faulkner, Secretary-Treasurer. Later, after a rousing initiation party given by the Seniors we really felt a part of the Woodburn High School. We did much campaigning and were rewarded by having one of our class members, Carol Faulkner, selected Queen of the Fall Festival. We had quite a few parties and the year was soon over. After the surnmer vacation we returned to W.H.S. and discovered we were now Sophomores. As we were greeting our classmates we noticed sadly that our nurnber had decreased to twenty-eight, as Patty Lloyd and Max Thompson moved away, and we lost Lucille Delagrange, Sammy Delagrange, Loraine Eicher, Donald Reichhart and Marlin Riebersal. This year John Hetrick was elected President, Bob Wearley, Vice-President, Carol Faulkner, Secretary-Treasurer and Mr. McBride was our sponsor. After several parties the year soon came to an end. Before we knew it we were back again at the Woodburn High School, this tirne labeled Ju.niors . We did feel sad at the loss of Cecil Albrecht, Tune Caudle, Viola Delagrange, Norma Shafer and Maggie Zehr. Soon we plunged whole-heartedly into a lot of fun and hard work. 'We started by electing Tom Fuelling, President, Esther Kammeyer, Vice-President, Ruth Meyer, Secretary-Treasurer and Mrs. Wilrna Wetter, Class Sponsor. We soon took our first fling at dramatics and in October pre- sented Love Is Too Much Trouble . In the, cast of this successful comedy were: Pat Roberts, Esther Kammeyer, Tom Fuelling, Ruth Meyer, Dick Becker, Carolyn Moore, Marolyn Moore, Bob Wearley, Laura Norden, Kay Schulenburg, John I-letrick, Curtis Schmidt, Carol Faulkner, and Barbara Lake. Dick Becker won a radio for outstanding salesmanship in our magazine drive. Other Hot Salesmen winning awards were: Bob Wearley, Howard Hoeppner, Esther Kammeyer, Tom Fuelling, Lawrence Fogle and John Moser. After much hard work and planning, the Juniors entertained the Seniors at the annual Junior-Senior Reception. It was held at the American Legion Home and the theme was Deep South . We also sold cards and had a few more par- ties and our Junior year was too soon concluded. ' In the fall of 1950, twenty-two of our class returned for our big Senior year at Woodburn High School. We gained Max Thompson but, sad to say, lost Helen Bumpus, Barbara Lake and during the year Carol Faulkner and Howard Hoeppner. As usual we elected class officers, having Esther Kammeyer, President, Dick Becker, Vice-Pres- ident, Ruth Meyer, Secretary-Treasurer and Mr. Moser, our sponsor. The year started with a bang as all the girls campaigned for the title Queen of Woodburn Days . After a close race Ruth Meyer was crowned. As it is the custom we fully initiated the Freshrnen into W.H.S. at a party given for them. We kept busy with paper drives and bake sales until we started practicing for our second production, Ghost House , a chiller-driller mystery. The cast included Ruth Meyer, Tom Fuelling, Esther Kammeyer, Max Thompson, Marolyn Moore, Bob Wearley, Kay Schulenburg, Pat Roberts, Bob Ringenberg, Carolyn Moore, Dick Becker, and Curtis Schmidt. ini wg at ' .,. A ,- ,,..,, ,,-,,.4.-.'.LH: The last Saturday in April, the Juniors entertained us with the annual recep- tionJ It was held at the American Legion Home and we shall always remember the wonderful tirne the Juniors gave us. Tom Fuelling--Editor, Dick Becker--Assistant Editor, Bob Wearley--Sports Editor, Herbert Bertsche--Art Editor, Kay Schulenburg--Class Editor, Ruth Meyer-- Activities Editor, Pat Roberts--Business Manager and Typist, and Marolyn Moore-- Secretary and Typist, all worked long and hard in order to make this year's Arrow the best yet. We were all getting excited and eagerly looking forward to our big five-day trip to New York and Washington. Soon graduation week rolled around. The speaker for our baccalaureate ser- vice was the Reverend Seth Painter. Assisting hixn was Reverend C. N. Moser, and music was furnished by the High School Chorus and the Junior Choir. Friday night, May 11th, was the date so long looked forward to, Graduation. The speaker for this event was Dr. Lawrence Hess, and the band furnished the music. Our flower was the white carnation and our colors--garnet red and white. As we part and travel down life's highway, may we always look upon these as the happiest four years in our life and always keep in mind our motto, We Finish To Begin Anew . 'X 'g.,.,, V Q... But the Gypsy girl told us of your future true, So listen real close and we'l1 tell it to you--- Our crystal ball shows a mechanic! That's rare! Well what do you know-it's Herb Bertsche so fair, Changing carburetors, tires, and everything on cars- Even inventing a hot rod that'l1 go to Mars! Though a quiet person you may be, Esther, you'll rise to great heights, wait and see. As a grade school teacher you'll do best, A born leader by every test. Jim Amstutz, you'll stick to basketball. Have fun playing with the Pistons next fall. Don't worry if you're slow and not on the beam, You can always be water boy for the team. Though a restless nature compels you to roam, Kathleen, your constant love brings you back home. As a talented artist, writer, or musician, You'll always maintain a fine position. Ambitious John Hetrick has a big long list Containing the careers he cannot resist. But he'l1 be a farmer and in it will shine, And repair the fences in his spare tirne. Intensely emotional and dramatic you stand. You rule with the power of an iron hand. With detective work as your goal in life's career, Pat Roberts, you haven't a thing to fear. Bob Ringenberg, we know what you want to do. Your ambition is a grocery clerk who's honest and true. And during the day you'll make lots of sales, But Bob, keep your thumb off the scales. A handsome boss, an office chair, A secretary's job for a lady fair. A description, Marolyn Moore, of the life you'll lead. After you have this, there's nothing else you'll need. Fearless, straightforward, and frankly outspoken, Guard what you say, lest your own heart be broken. Tom Fuelling, you're kind appreciative and devoted. As a merchandiser out of college, your career will be noted. Laura Norden, you're a girl with charm. I predict you'll always live on a farm, Cooking, sewing, and keeping 21 clean house, Even setting a trap for that pesky Qld mouse, fx. On an even keel Becker's life is lain, Kind and just you'll keep that plane. As a trustee, county agent. dentist, or physician, You'll do justice to most any position. A smart little girl of endurance sublime Meyers, your friendliness will help you to climb, That you'1l be a stewardess is a reality, So make good use of your personality. An opera singer in the crystal ball is seen, Who could that be and what does it mean? Why, Curtis Schmidt, you know all about it- A singing career you want, don't anyone doubt it. The crystal ball and the deep, dark well, Carolyn Moore, will of your future tell. A secretary you'l1 be in an office that's cozy, And ending up a millionaire, isn't that rosie? Thoughts of cars now fill your dreams, Moser, you're always repairing, it seems, You're keen, mechanical, and mentally quick, As a second Henry Ford you're going to click. Gladys Woebbeking, I guess you are next. We know we'1l find you behind a desk. Being a secretary for some large firm, That is, if you studied during your last school term. A farmer in the crystal doth appear That job only takes three-fourths of the year.. Virgil Woebbeking beware-we know your reason. You just want to loaf the rest of the season. As a salesman, Bob Wearley, you want to compete, I guess you're getting tired of just cutting meat. Opportunity for you is always at hand. Keep that in mind and that job you'11 land. Thompson, we know what you want to aspire. You will clirnb to a peak that cannot be higher. In the world of business as a public figure, You're love of fame will grow bigger and bigger. Lawrence Fogle, you're a lucky guy, When the girls see you they'1l all sigh. Because as an elevator manager you'l1 end up to be The richest man Woodburn'will ever see. Seniors, in the careers you've now chosen Don't let anyone ever find you dozin'. Be ambitious and successful in whatever you do. Your friends, the Juniors, are rooting for you. -x . 1 E7 LMA H56 ALL! liwir T-- Z2' ' .- . L-- N 'f',i1s1'a--7-xr' --.--,:.1u.1 , , - . The girls also had a basketball team, but were defeated in a close game by the Seniors. 113-141. Q The Sophomores entertained the Freshmen with a party at the Legion Home. Kay Moser led the group in games and folk dances. Since the boys won the class tournament, the girls entertained them with a party held at the home of Lawrence Wells. Some of the boys made very handsome girls with make-up, girls' clothes, hose and high heels long the girls also were dressed as boys, and of course, everyone had a bathing suit on for good measure. Receiving only what they deserve, the Freshmen were tied together with ropes and led to the ball game. They were then given a sightseeing tour of our fair city. Upon returning to the shelter house we feared they might be dirty so a dunking in the pond was the next attraction. Of course, no initiation is complete without walking thru molasses and feathers so the Freshmen were subjected to this feat. It being a chilly evening, and the Seniors ever thoughtful the greenhorns were allow- ed to unknot their clothes and put them on again after finding them smeared with limburger cheese. Still thoughtful, we gave them some very appetizing morsels to eat. After this, refreshments served. The Seniors enjoyed the food imrnensely as the Freshrnen were not very hungry anymore. The party ended with the class of 54 being full fledged Freshinen. I Q -. SENIORS FRESHIES Junior-Senior Reception On Saturday the 28th of April, 1951, the Senior Class was honored by the Junior Class at the annual Junior and Senior Reception held in the American Legion Home in Woodburn. As the guests entered the door ready to ascend the stairs, a native girl from Hawaii greeted them with Aloha ! As they went ashore, the Hawaiian Island, under an arch of flowers between two palms, they were greeted again by another Hawaiian with a drink called Weike Drearn . After this, they were seated at five large tables on the island. The dinner consisted of Hula Moon Cocktail, Poi with Parsley, Kailua Beef, Mona Loa Salad, Kaneohe Corn, Butter and Rolls, Princess Aloha Relish Dish, Isle of Paradise, and coffee was served by Hawaiian girls. Hawaiian music during and preceeding the dinner was provided for by the Tropical Nights , seated around a large straw hut. Off to each side of the hut was a large fence of flowers, and on each side of the fence was a large palrn. From the ceiling shone blue lights through a blue sky and twinkling stars.
