LIF'E'S PATHVYAY Let us climb ong we cannot tall To climb the crest of knowledge steep- Start with talth and leave the trail He falls who feebly crawls and creeps Though it be rocky all the way A ray oi hope gives ard and cheer Who stands up bravely wins the day And makes success seem very near Who starts rlght xn wlth mlght and zest with mlnd and heart in full control Xtho always tries to do his best Xklll ful to reach the goal A Q 2 The Freshmen Lb we are the Freshmen ol' whom you have no doubt heard much We entered Woodlake High School on Y the ltth of September 1923 and received a royal welcome from the upper elassmen especially the Sophomores In all lxkellhood we were much like all other Ire-xhmen classes but of course thought ourselves ol' rnueh superior clay a characterxstic whxch seems to be common to all Freshmen We started our actnvltles by electmg Nyelene Davis president Anna Usher vlce lpresxdent Madge Thomas secretary and treas urer and Mr Davls class teacher Under the leadershlp of these otfiuals we have enjoyed a most successful year Oux fnst soclal exent was a masquerade party glven in honor ol the Sophomore class In athletlcs we shone like the morning star First came Football Here Thomas Tomxyamn ably dld hxs part ln making the team a success In basketball hve Freshmen wue represented ther were Norman Blown Frank Sakamoto Arthur Eggington Lenel Shuck and Edwln Ropes We also have the honor of starting Woodlakes tlrst teathervwexght team In base ball the xnfleld was entxrelv composed of Freshmen mth one exeeptxon Thomas Tonnyama Norman Brown Morris Olner and Prank Qakamoto were our representatives We also demonstrated that we could excell in something be sldGS athletxcs for ID drarnatlcs the Freshmen were not outdone by anv othen classes ln the Woodlesque the F eshmen took some ot the leading parts also ln the musltsl comedy The Wishing A ell we were xblv represented We cannot lllldfll tand wht the l'llNhYVl'lYl class lS alvsftvs . looked down upon as green and unlearned when really lt lt were not for us there would be no high school The school is just like a machme if all the parts are not in especially an important part it would not work We consider ourselves the most important part of the Woodlake High School machine EDWIN ROPES 27 1 VISIT T0 WOODLAICE Barton Arlean and I went for a Tripp to survey the wonders of Woodlake Arlean and I donned our Pearl and Opal jewelry for we wlshed to look or best On such a Trlpp It is well to know the Ropes otherwise being a Newman one might mlss some of the famous places Walking down Vernon Street to Verna Avenue Arlean and I went to the Taylors while Barton went to the Smlths to get a wheel put on his wagon smce the other one had been Ruth lessly destroyed Having arranged to meet each other at the Sakamoto restau rant we entered and were Usher ed to our eats by Albert and Chester who were dressed in Tomiyama suxts After we were comfortably seated and Edith the waitress hid taken our order Alleend over to Barton and said I D Clare' If this lsnt s I-lick town giving e. guest a Morris chair ln a restaurant' We waited for about fifteen minutes Pre ently the dainty waitress reaprpeared bearing a trav of delicious looking food She let before us a very appetlzlng Spanish dlnner composed of Span ish Rice a large tamale with Brown Shurlks and Murphles with the usual accompaniment of bread and butter I told the waitress to Topper o'f with Welsh Rarebit what should lt be hut Drybread' Barton very much out of humor said Put it ln your pocket and we ll feed it to the pup Du Brut: eat bread' I thought they vere carnivorous answered Arlean turning over ln her mind the fesslblllty of the suggestion While ave were endeavoring to make the best of the fare two Georgia Kuhns Everet and Arthur lame on the platform danced s clog and ac ompanved by a Kxmball Plaver Plano sang a very affecting song entitled When the My rtle Blossoms in the Shad doww Clen NVe arose from the t lble pud our Bill to the Cashier 'Wvelen who sat behind the cash register reading Aletanders Marvelous Madge lc ' Satisfied. that we had seen all of the v onders Woodlake had to offer we looked t our wat:-he-1 ani saw it ww time to Homer 1 ' 1 v ' I I I , , V ' ' I r , . 1 V Q I . , . . .
